Catfishing on the Cumberland River: Exploding Winter Time Pattern
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- This is just one technique that I use to locate active wintering catfish in rivers. Hole jumping on the river runs is what you will see in this video. Locating depressions in the river bottom, small key areas along the river system that is deeper than the rest. With the assistance of a depth finder/GPS I can quickly pin point and key into prime hot spots for winter time action. Some holes will hold fish and some holes dont seem to do as well. My plan of attack is to pick 5 key areas within a few mile stretch of river and target them until I confirm a working pattern. The water temp was 43 degrees and the date was Jan 17th 2015.monsterrodholde...
Watching these videos at 6am makes me want to wake my 9 and 11 yr old nephews and take em fishing thank you Steve..
Get the bait! wish you luck and thanks for the comment Chuy
Some kick ass action there Steve! Launching that blue back into the Cumberland = priceless.
Winter time fishing is some times hard bite to get on my water, yet you make it look easy, keep living the dream
Steve,
Thanks for a great video, I was laughing so hard when you chucked that big Blue out the back of the boat, that was a monstrous takedown on your rod, all the years I have known you I have never seen you that excited still laughing, everybody and his brother will now be fishing that spot we have fished it for years and never was a boat on it, love fishing the Cumberland River I like the water that is down river below the bluffs in that turn, but any of that water is good thanks again for a great video....Doc
Tim, i just had a cpl hours and didnt want to drive far so i just fished close stuff. i cant figure out why so many go to that part of the river to catch jacks but dont bring their boats for some action. i never go there without my boat. Cumberland river is just plain fun to fish. thanks for the comment Doc
Awesome video Steve! I especially loved the catfish catapult you did there! Haha
thanks chris, it was busy, lol
Yeah I loved when you just threw it and grabbed the other rod. Had to watch that part a few times lmao
definitely my favorite part!! lol
Waters still frozen up here in the north but love watching someone have fun on the big river. Can't wait to get out there myself.
man I keep watching this video and if I had a good day like that I would be having a blast too. this is by far in the top 5 videos .
Looks like a awesome time Steve that's more action than I think I could handle good memories I'm sure
Hey Steve! I've watch all your videos several times and glad you're making them longer now. This one is definitely my new favorite.Had some good luck last Friday.Caught a 57# Blue off the bank at Texoma on the Texas side.Same area where ole Splash was caught.Keep up the good work!
thanks james
Great video as usual Steve. It's a great day when you can find them stacked in a hole like that.
Sir, thats why I like to jump around and find an active fish. thanks for the comment.
Steve Douglas I primarily fish a large reservoir and the fish will stack up but they don't use current breaks as much due to hardly any current. But when you can find them the action is amazing. Keep up the great videos and still liking these longer videos.
You are the man... love watching your videos! I live about a mile from the Cumberland river. Right below old hickory dam. Gonna have to go out and give this a try.
Thanks for another great video Steve. I was waiting on Linda to grab one of them rods to give you a break. Thanks again awesome video.
Brother Steve, I was glued to this video! Total silence. When you heaved that cat over the back to grab your third take down, I had to laugh!!! Funny as hell! You never toss fish that way. But in this situation you had no choice. You gotta work out that day! I'm excited! Little ice on the water up here. Soon enough I'll be on the water! Can't wait!
thanks Ernie,
Another great video! Thank you for always being informative and showing how you catch these fish!!!!!!!!!
Steve, I really enjoy your videos but none have made me laugh like I did when you chunked that fish back in to grab the other rod. I know by your other videos that you're very respectful of the fish, and I respect you for that, but hey, we all get excited. Great stuff!
Michael Brigman LOL i chucked him gracfully. thanks for stopping by to leave a comment.
Only dude that can call this sport catching and not fishing!!!! Great vid !!!
I found 5 or 6 holes just like that on the Chickahominy..I just need to get me some of that good bait...Once again..Great video Steve...Keep em coming...On a bait hunt for me...
Neat trick on de-pressurizing those fish...Water on the Chick was 38 Saturday...
Awesome day on the water, congrats Steve!
I love the Cumberland river have a lot of good memories on that river. Love fishing for catfish.
Man o man that is some fast action blue fishing. Love it! Great video as always!
My buddy shared and recommended this video to me. Great tips and info. Will keep following 👍
you know its a good day when your chucking them out the back of the boat. I laughed great vids keep up the great work
Another great video, Steve! Especially the bow to stern catapult to grab your other pole haha. You make me want to get my boat out now instead of waiting until April! I'm sure even when it's freezing cold outside, it's days like those that can totally keep you warm inside =)
thanks for the comment Julie, they still bite in the winter if you got open water.
Steve Douglas - You've definitely proven that! LOL. I think I'm going to Meldahl dam (Foster dam) in Kentucky to stock up on some skipjack this spring. Ever been around that area? My fiancé's father is taking me there for the first time this year. I'm pretty excited, I've never went on a rampage to stock up on them until learning some tips and tricks on how from you =)
P.S: You must have a garage to store your boat in so you don't have to keep winterizing it, correct? That's the only reason I haven't had mine out yet. Mine is covered an enclosed next to my parents barn here in Indiana. Besides multiple winterizations, I think my winter fishing is out of commission =)
Julie Lynn i put in an old barn but only to keep the snow off of it, so I can go when i want to. i dont winterize it as im in it all winter.
I see you like them catmaxx reels...I own 2 but they both went to crap only after a few times on the river. First the caps on the brake broke then the drag on one went. So i decided to get a bett reel so i replaced them with 2 c3's. (After spending a Lot of money on a set of c4's but the ratio wasnt to my liking). If u like the c4's ill cut ya a deal on a pair of them. Lol I do use the catmaxx rods though. Them catmaxx rods are awesome in my books. I haven't caught a fish yet that that rod couldn't handle.
Steve, I love how you slam dunked that blue into the river when that third pole went wild lol. That was HILARIOUS! Hahaha.
yea he had to go so i could land another, thank you for the comment.
Good film Steve.....I'll be fishing a river in in NC next month and am picking up some good info from you....thanks...Chuck
Wow what a great video sir , I appreciate it and will share it with my friends.
Hey Steve! awesome video as always enjoy watching it learn alot from your videos Tennessee love that state never fish there vacation there alot I see that factory in the background in a couple of your videos that must be a good spot you found there honey hole keep catching the biggins steve keep the videos coming
Thanks for taking the time to share your fishing trips with us.That is some of the fastest cat fishing action I have ever seen for such big cats. I have fished hours to catch a few that weren't anywhere as big. Were you catching your skip jacks in the Steam Plants water discharge?
yes sir the hot water discharges.
Man Steve watching that has my arms tired. I have been planning a trip right to that area and had looked at is to much on Google Earth I recognized it right off. The skip bite had slowed a little but it is evident the blues are hungry. I knew that ferry when I saw it too. Great videos. Thanks for sharing.
thanks, here is another option for scouting webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en
Steve Douglas Yes sir...navionics webapp is the deal...I appreciate you sharing that Steve..
Steve, order a calf drencher from Jeffer's livestock web site. Remove the plastic container and use the drencher part to run down the cat fish throat to remove the air. It is painless, smooth, and easy to do.
Awesome video Steve. . I laughed out loud when I saw you throw the catfish in the water like that on you third hit!! You da man Steve! !
poles going down everywhere, had to get him back in and make room for the next one. thanks for the comment
I live on the Cumberland River up by Old Hickory Dam, just wanted to know if you ever come up this far. We catch a lot of flatheads and channels, my person best is a 75.8 flathead on a whole skipjack. Hope to see you up here one day.
Thanks- Tucker Barnes
Did you release the big flatty ??
Those are nice fish steve I am going to try winter time fishing
I actually laughed out loud at the fish toss.
The way he threw that blue back, I couldn’t stop laughing. Must have rewind it 5 times.
I laughed out loud when you chucked that catfish! haha awesome fishing Steve
thanks Blair, it was a busy day.
BACK TO BACK TO BACK FISH!!!! TIMEs 2!!!! WoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooW!!! You did it!!!!
Your videos are great , I really like how you drop some knowledge like where and how to get some good bait and where to find them big blues . I have myself a small 14 river john with a little 20 mercury jet prop . I'm here by Louisville and have really only fished the falls . i have heard of a place called Bright lights that is supposed to be very good . Have you heard of it?
Awesome footage. Perfect form on the catfish toss. Give u a 10 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Still 2 foot of ice where I'm at, just passing my time, spring is coming Thanks for a great video to get me through the winter.
days are getting longer , it wont be long. Thanks for the comment Dweller

Thanks for the comment Michael.
Have you ever fished up close to the dam on Lake Cumberland or is the water too cold?
I laughed my ass off when you got that third one and gave that second one the ole heave ho! hahaha that was funny.
Have you ever fished down in Mississippi at blue springs lock and dam on the Tennessee Tom bigbee. I hears stories it has fish as big as volkswagons.
Gary Poe I have fished the Tom Bigbee a few times around Columbus and Aberdeen during the Cabelas King Kat catfish tournaments. Seems to have a great population of Flatheads and the blues are coming on too. Thanks for the comment Gary
what kind of anchoring system are you using? Appreciate your videos.
Sweet videos man going catfishing in the morning. hope to catch a few big ones. keep the videos coming got mysub!!
brian cassidy thanks for stopping by Brian, I hope you catch a good one tomorrow, Good luck to you.
Steve, is there any way you could take us for a lesson on how you catch your skip jack especially in the winter, I need help with this.
YOU CAN USE BLUEGILL FILLET OR WHOLE AS BAIT
Really like this video! I would like to watch one of you catching bait.
throwing that catfish back in the water made me laugh.
great video.
thanks for the comment Roberto.
Cumberland City. I loved that spot when I was stationed at Fort Campbell.
Whats your biggest fish from that spot Derick? its always good to me for at least a 30 lber.
Steve Douglas right there within the 30-40 pound range. there were times my wife and I would go down to that spot and couldnt keep rods in the water. They were eating the shad up. Even caught a few nice flatheads out there in the summer time. If you put in right there at the ferry or close to it and run past the steam plant....it will be on your left, there is a small creek on the left side of the river, keep going....the river will turn hard right, at that turn, the outside of the turn was picking up hole as deep ad 90 feet. never fished them but id say they hold em.
Are you fishing near Cumberland city power plant in this video
Can you do a video about catching shad? Do you recommend using a cast net at all?
And I also noticed how you use your palm to remove the hooks could you do a quick video on that next time?
nice run there...great video.
great video ! Keep them coming.
Awesome footage.
thanks
Jealous very jealous, thank you for putting this up at least I get to watch you. Why doesn't Lisa get to fish? I would want to fish too.
Lisa doesnt like to fish , she likes shooting video though thank goodness. thanks for the comment
Thanks Lisa for shooting them.
I never thought I'd hear a catfish burp
Do you ever use side imaging sonar
Steve how late into the year do you fish ?
What part of the river is this I live in Cheatham county and the Cumberland is like 30min from my house and I have never caught cats like that
I thin it's the steam plant in Cumberland city
Awesome video like always :)
thank you
Was that last fish a big channel cat?
I fish the Missouri River . Iowa.nebraska.south Dakota. the bite has stopped or changed can't seem to find the fish water temp 54 degrees should be good fishing still but not for me middle of November can't find the fish
Steve, here is a web site that sells the stainless steel probe for calf drencher for $19.
Is that the ferry crossing near clarksville, TN?
I think it is near the Cumberland city power plant
hey steve noticed u have a ball in your boat do you use that for a drifting?
No, i use it for anchoring in case i have to throw the anchor and run down a fish.
oh ok i never thought of doing that, cool idea thanks
do u ever fish the arkansas river
