If an area is dark enough regardless of day or night, enemy mobs like creepers spawn. Which is I think generally why they don't spawn on the surface unless it's night because when it's day, the entire surface is lit up.

This isn’t really a problem for very small bases since hostile mobs can’t spawn within a certain vicinity to you unless it’s because of a spawner.
Of course if you leave that small unlit base and come back quickly it’s a different story since hostile mobs can then spawn there due to you being far enough away for mobs to spawn.

1)From what I understand the game checks if entities are present in an area of some blocks so it doesn't spawn anymore mobs in the same area and players are entities just like mobs(Only if the area is dark)
2) They spawn in anywhere dark at any point of the day
3.1) That was a ghast it is basically a ghost that fires fireballs, they spawn everywhere, the fireballs are instant because of changing the speed of the game(Usually they are very slow)
3.2) That other mob is a phantoms
3.3) One of the most interesting thing, I have done is hardcore minecraft flat world only which has been done before, it's exactly what it says, only one life, flat world where resources are rare
3.4) You can do anything with villagers, The most interesting thing is a trader farm(Which is often used in flat world challenge for things) Which is trapping all the villagers in one block spot and trading with the best priced deals
3.5) The game is still played and will always be played, it seems, the game keeps dying in popularity and then popping back up, I was there for most of it.

monsters can spawn in dark areas but not too close to players. They can spawn in dark places such as caves even during the day. daylight burns zombies and skeletons but not creepers, so they can linger during the day for a bit longer before despawning or come from a dark cave. When these two are just setting up a one use shelter to skip the night by sleeping they don't really need to worry about mobs spawning in there because they wouldn't be able to spawn too close to them and they won't be coming back to the place.
