  • - brand new DeWalt DCD790D2 brushless drill out ot the box - here is the proof of poor quality control
    - the problem is not only the chuck - holding shaft wobbles as well - almost 1mm run-out!
    - faulty piece (maybe whole batch) or serious design flaw in DCD790 series
    - everything else about this tool is great - powerful and compact
    - returning it back to DeWalt and hoping that newer DCD791D2 should be improved - we will see soon enough...

I've just bought a new dewalt dcd778 in the UK. I drilled two holes in 6mm acrylic sheet before noticing the same thing. How does this happen in today's world? Maybe this is why they are suspiciously cheap?

I bought a dcd796d2 impact drill in May by an online store. Wobble symptoms are clearly visible, I tried to find an authorized dealer in my city, I tried to check there, after I left two days to be checked by their technicians, I contacted to find out the cause, they answered the damage to the SA transmission, and immediately replaced without my approval, and not covered by the warranty. the price was charged at USD 58. after I tested it turned out it was still wobble too ... and I canceled the replacement. it turns out that Dewalt products aren't as tough as advertisements

My brand new 796 has a wobble which is what bought me here. To be honest this video and these comments make me feel a bit better as mine isn't as bad as this. Opening the chuck right up and observing the centre the shaft appears to be true. So it looks like it's just the chuck itself.

I'm stunned at how crap these drills are. I have the DCD767 and it was all over the place. I bought a replacement keyed Dewalt chuck and it STILL wobbled! Because the fricken drive shaft was out of true! My god! How hard can it be to make a decent usable drill??

Bought one a week ago didn't have that much wobble. I believe I will live with it for now. Checked it against the two we have at work and it's about the same. My old 12 volt dewalt drill with a 3/8 chuck that is 18 years old has less run out than my new drill...go figure. If it was a 1/2 chuck I would switch them out in a heartbeat.

I returned the DCD790 next day, got DCD791D2 now, less wobble but still some... this definitely should not happen in the price range of these tools... the problem is internal helical gear setup / design I suppose - ALL powder metal gears now days! Yes, good portion of wobble comes from imperfect chuck, however when I removed the chuck, I was shocked how much threaded shaft wobbled by itself! This never happened on older DeWalt drills...
The quality control at DeWalt is really questionable - now you gotta handpick your drill to get a good one!
Our seller was actually very nice, I requested newer DCD791D2 instead to give DeWalt one more shot, and that's how he responded: "OK, no problem, I got 20+ on stock, I will pick one with least amount of wobble"... WOOOW! :-( I guess some customers don't notice the wobble or just don't care... My mind wonders... :-D
BUT... That weekend I also bumped into the EXPO truck filled with latest MAKITAs and BOSCH drills, I think I tried ALL of them in similar range of DCD790 / DCD791 and most of them behaved just like that! HAMMER DRILL models were actually even worse... I understand that all these cordless drills are not made for precision, but to remain lightweight and powerful, but I just can't believe that regardless all the metal powder gears inside (to cut the cost) they can't figure out the way to hold the shaft in place without such a run-out!
Yes, new tools are released every year, better looking, more powerful by specs, but lately I am not so excited when the new box arrives at my door, does not matter if it's DeWalt, Makita, Bosch or any other outsourced brand... I became skeptic and miss good old days when brand name meant something and manufacturers actually cared about customer more than shareholders...
When you order online make sure you will be able to RETURN the tool - do not put up with this attitude!
If you are not happy, upload the video and expose the "brand name" which costs hundreds of
dollars and let others see the latest monstrosity...
      Cheers! :-D

It's really a disappointment that we are definitely in a race to the bottom between all manufacturers. Who can make the best at the lowest cost! The housing and chuck is great. They just cheap out on the gearing. If they went back to machining gears and slowed down production for the sake of quality they would more than likely earn life long customers. Now people like myself try the big red and green brands to look for the best bang for our buck. Most of us who enjoy using good tools tend to do good work. We don't mind paying more for quality. The sad fact is if there not punished by lack of sales the trend will continue. I love tools. I buy all different brands and do my research all the time. There so close in quality these days it seems like whoever you choose to go with you have to check silly stuff like... Is the chuck straight, are the seems together evenly, does the chuck lock, do the switches have nice a nice snap to them. Milwaukee for all of the hype isn't much better. I have there new 1/4 impact and if I put a flash light through the vents I can see the seems not together between the housing. Hopefully sooner than later they will be in a race to make the best most indestructible machine! Take care

The dcd791 is the third Dewalt-brand tool that I've bought new. The first was the dw235g corded 1/2 vsr drill, which I've had to take in to get repaired after a few weeks usage (chuck wobble). The second was the dwe6423k orbit sander, which I've had no problems with at all.
About this dcd791 though.. Chuck was straight enough, initially. But after a few hours usage, it became very wobbly. I usually feel bad when I return something after using it, so I took it to the service center to get the chuck repaired. Rather than repairing it, the service center decided to have a new one mailed to me. The new one they mailed was even worse than the one i bought, so I immediately went back to the service center to have it REPAIRED and not replaced. They said they'll work on it and give me a call.
I didn't get a call, but I did receive yet a third new dcd791 in the mail from the factory line... I quickly plugged a battery to it to check the chuck and sure enough, it did not drill straight. This third one does drill more straight than the first two, however. So I'm considering just keeping this third one and living with the wobble.
I want to like Dewalt, I really do. I'm just afraid to use my dewalt drills now, in fear of not knowing just how fragile their gear housing, chucks, and arbors really are. My dad is a huge Dewalt guy, but maybe Dewalt tools were made better back in his blue collar days. For Dad's sake, i haven't given up on them though.

mike216ism yes.. very well said, after the research, it all depends how well the tool is put together, so good ol research seems to be taking a backseat to individual build quality. The unfortunate part is you’re playing Russian roulette when it comes to receiving a good product, more so when ordering online. I have waited months to get the new Milwaukee 2598-22, the first one I received the impact was totally jacked. Something was rubbing squeaking on the inside. Sent it back the next day. Ordered a second set and this one has the drill wobble, not as bad as it could be but definitely could be better.. I decided to even buy a third set so I can compare which one has the least amount of problems... what the hell is going on nowadays, is this what we’re going to be doing? Ordering 3 of the same tool in the future to pick out the best one and send the rest back? It’s just crazy given where tech is at now. That is true, they need to slow the line down and make better effort to box a good tool. It’s all the brands, this is just the trend we’re heading and it’s sad. My grandpa would smash a hammer drill handle attachment over a customer service rep if he was alive and had to deal with this crap

I took it back and went through 4 Drills !!!!! YES 4 all quite bad , the 5th one was the best , BUT NOT perfect .....
so i exchanged , but i'm thinking of returning it again now
I also purchased the multitool, the jigsaw the circular saw - spending over £700 on the kits, batteries and also Drill and multitool gets, so i'm bought into the dewalt 18v system now - as i thought this was one of the best brands , quite a few processional told me to get dewalt, they will last, high quality and in a DIY space will last years and years

I've been doing some research about chuck wobble, seems like is a possibility with any brand.
If you want to go for the DIY solution there is a better Dewalt chuck that you can install yourself. Is made in Germany by Rhom, a different manufacturer than the stock chuck. Model number Dewalt DT7046.
Make sure your test your drill chuck with good quality and preferable new drill bits. I started to get mad about mine to find out that my drill bits where unaligned properly.

Maybe if you put like another 6 or 8 bits in there we could watch this thing wobble all day. What was the point after, say, 1 minute of watching it wobble.

Although the wobble of the actual chuck itself looks particularly bad in this video, I have the same issue with both of my 996's from time to time. Pretty sure 99% of the time it's because people just throw the bit in then chuck it up real fast. I think most drills' bit wobble issues are caused by the bit not being centered in the jaws when locking it in (even with triflat shank bits) even though you may think it is. Helps alot if you take the time to chuck the bit up properly. Eventually you can eliminate the the wobble all together after chucking up slowly (by hand) then checking the rotation and repeat until wobble isn't noticable.

lol what, its physically impossible for bit to align off center any way you tighten...

Yes and many times the cheap bits have bend in them. But, In the video you can clearly see that the chuck is wobbling from the bottom rim. If you put a nail in the gap between the machine body and chuck, then you will feel the slowly pulsing pushings. Same case with the two stanley drills that I returned. Feels like this issue started occurring when Stanley took over Dewalt company.

I can't believe I watched the whole stupid video hoping to get a fix. We get that the chuck wobbles but how do you fix it?

    • @cheek1m0nkey
      @cheek1m0nkey 7 років тому +3

You get Dewalt to replace with another model. There is no home remedy.

Tyler Geer You fix it by returning junk to stores to pressure manufacturers to stop producing junk.

The problems are likely in the bits. Mine does this as well, but once I put something straighter in the chuck there was no wobble.
