Highlander Went From Cult Classic To Failed Franchise - VHS TALES
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 жов 2024
- NO REMAKE REQUIRED NO SEQUELS NEEDED! Highlander starring Sean Connery, Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown bombed at the box office, but soon after became a cult classic spawning many horrible sequels, a TV series, and animated kids show! In this ep of "VHS TALES" we take a look at the movie franchise, talk about how we discovered them on VHS in the video stores, and how there's NO NEED for sequels or REMAKES, this movie is The Quickening in a bottle. It shouldn't have worked but it did, and that makes it very special. #Highlander #CultClassic #MovieHistory #FilmAnalysis

Justin’s Lambert impression officially is now rent free in my mind. Totally agree aside from
Part 1 …… yeah…… let’s just leave it there…….
yeah Justin really nailed it.
This film was directed by Russell Mulcahy who previously made Razorback. He was offered Cycle Of The Werewolf/ Silver Bullet but turned it down because he didn't want type cast as a horror director. Just imagine if Russell had made Silver Bullet 😍
Razorback is on our "to do" list!
Our Razorback review went up yesterday!!
There's something to be said for starting the movie in the middle of something without having to explain every damn detail, it worked for Star Wars, it works for Highlander, the picture slowly comes together, it's part of the journey...
yeah the movie is structured perfectly!
It's amazing how much storyline, mythos, and characters they squeezed in.
For starters, I really love this movie.
The Queen songs work in the movie because they were written for the movie.
The album A Kind Of Magic is pretty much the movie's OST, or at least the Queen part of the movie's OST.
Queen is one of the reasons I love the movie, and the movie is one of the reasons I love Queen. I discovered both around the same time.
Anyways, there should've been only one movie.
A remake/reboot could work depending on who works on it, but I won't get my hopes up if Hollywood decides to take the risk.
Cheers from France! 🍻
Cheers from Winnipeg Canada
I remember in high school in Edinburgh we were shown Highlander on the last day of the year as a treat. It was taped on VHS from TV and the whole class watched it on one of those steel television and video player stands from the science department.
The fucking teacher stood in front of the screen during the ropey sex scene while we all pissed ourselves laughing.
haha that is pretty awesome, we didn't get to watch any movies in highschool
If i remember correctly Queen does the title song or a song in it that was pretty good . Pretty good film 📼 saw it on 📼 back in the day . No memories of sequals at all . Lambert eventually got married to beautiful Diane Lane for awhile also 😮
And who can forget clancy brown who they made look like a massive monster 👾
If ever a movie didn't need a sequel. After the ending of Highlander there's nowhere left to go. They kept coming up with the most convoluted crap to keep it going.
I love VHS Tales! I love this movie... That scene where he gets drunk and has a duel that traumatizes the other guy so much... Great movie!!
AH, glad you like the vhs tales segment! We know we have been neglecting it haha..
Didnt the screenwriter, Gregory Widen, write the Highlander script while attending UCLA film school? Widen went on to write Backdraft and write/direct The Prophecy.
Inspired skit, one of your five best. Adam's Connery especially was spot on.
hahah thanks! Yeah he wrote the script for a class at UCLA I believe.
The television show expanded the mythology, had fantastic writing and production values for the time and is very well regarded among fans.
I remember watching the tv series as a kid. It aired right between X-Files and Walker, Texas Ranger.
This is my favorite movie of all time. And that soundtrack...chef's kiss!!
Echo , of all time ? Do u not get out of the house much ?
“There can be only one!”
Hollywood: We’ll see about that!!
Just wait for next week's episode we expand on that with a epic rant using Alien Romulus as a spring board!
The best VHS cover for Highlander
is the airbrushed cover,
which makes Lambert look like Marlon Brando
and Clancy Brown look like
Peter Cushing.
Haha
Made me rethink the reception this film had o it's release. Also liked the take you guys have on it. Thanks FF for the review.
Thanks for watching, allot of 80's classics didn't go over well upon release. Big Trouble In Little China is another great example of that.
Spot on review, agree with you on every point
Highlander is awesome. Great review and the skits were hysterical. And shout out to copy of Ghoulies in the background.
Ghoulies is a classic video store cover!
@@FrightfullyForgotten. Yes it is. Helped the movie make a lot money in its day.
Adams Sean Connery impersonation... Haha!
Lol. Always love your skits! 😂
Thanks allot, glad you appreciate them
Unnecessarily pedantic comment warning.
His name is Christophe not Christopher
and Lambert is pronounced Lamb-bear
I'll meet your pedantry with some of my own: he sometimes refers to himself as Christopher Lambert (pronounced Lamb-burt) in interviews, though at other times he obviously uses the French pronunciation. He seems fine with it either way. I suppose that comes from him being from "lots of different places."
@@MAMoreno
His production company is called
Lamb bear productions.
Great video guys especially the skits
thanks allot, and thanks for sharing the video! Cheers!!
@@FrightfullyForgotten if you fancy a collab in the future let me know
@@VideoTasties we haven't done many collabs but we would be into that for sure if you got anything in mind let us know and keep in touch
Not a perfect movie, but has so much charm while also having a now iconic like great performance from fantastic actor Clancy Brown as villain The Kurgan. Queen's amazing soundtrack also made this 80s cult classic :-)
Great camera , cinematography, and acting boys , your beautiful 🍁 canada has some great scenery . 😅😊
I hate to tell you guys- there was a fifth movie. Yeah, they really should have stopped at the first one. As for continuity, Highlander is tied with Halloween for the most confusing. (Good parody, by the way.)
haha yes "the source" stumbled upon that on Tubi and kinda skimmed through it and never bothered to actually watch it, it seemed so far removed from all the others totally forgot about it.
@@FrightfullyForgotten You didn't really miss anything.
The fact that the sequels and TV series all bombed backs up your thesis that this movie shouldn't have worked but lightning struck in this case. I don't know if your video was meant to coincide with the remake of The Crow but my feeling is the same for both movies - the originals are perfect and I have no intention of watching any remakes of either movie. Great video!!!
@@Beaker709 oh god don't get us started on the crow remake. Talk about totally unnecessary
@FrightfullyForgotten The only good thing about The Crow remake is that it made me dig out my copy of the original and reminded me that I need to buy another copy of the graphic novel to replace the one I lost during one of my moves. Thanks to your video, I also plan on looking for a copy of The Highlander so I can watch that again.
@@Beaker709 I lost my version of the crow graphic novel too !!
The TV series ran for five years and is a favorite among the fandom. It expands on the mythos tremendously and in no way "bombed".
@richardwilliams5387 You make a valid point. I looked it up, and it was more popular than I first thought.
Love this movie had the VHS for years. I would like to recommend several VHS movies that I have MIDNIGHT RIDE staring Mark Hamil, I MADMAN, LADY IN WHITE. The skits are hilarious 😅😅😅
We just shot at review on I madman this Thursday, that will be up in a few weeks!
@@FrightfullyForgotten Cool 👍
I've got a strange, muddled
Russell Nash type of accent.
Mostly Scouse (Liverpool, England)
with hints of Greek, German and Welsh.
Lots of different places
Mulcahy would've killed for the remake's reported 100 million dollar budget. Cavill is a huge nerd who will keep the film honest (he quit The Witcher because he thought the writers were straying to far from the books) and it's got a fucking John Wick co director attatched who started out as a stunt coordinator and helped revolutionize action films. As the biggest fan of the franchise you could EVER find I'm incredibly excited at the prospect.
Connery owed the producers a few days work via contract for the sequel 😅😊 then hes gone . Kind of like charlton heston for Beneath the planet of the apes he did not wan t to do it but owed via contract so they let him rewrite some scenes , dialog and it and he was really good in it working limited days . 😅😊
I had to rewind the training montage and watch it again.
"Never overextend your bid. You're broke and you paid too much for common tapesh."

This is another tape my family owned on Beta while I was growing up. I have introduced it to so many friends over the years. I love the original but completely agree. There should have been only one. I can't stand any of the follow up movies, especially the second. The third though commits the sin of being boring. Which is unforgiveable.
The TV show isn't bad. I don't care for it but I have friends who love it and I won't say they are wrong. It weakened itself by trying to bring in Connor and tie into the movies. That doesn't work. It would have been better if it just stood on its own. it sheds Connor right away and then it goes on to expand the mythology. For fans who needed more the show really is the best option.
@@TheMrElzebub beta!! Nice! Glad you got a kick out of the skit and re watched it. Tha is exactly what we were hoping for.
I see you stopped one movie short, and you may have spared yourselves in doing so. Highlander II is Hamlet compared to Highlander: The Source. For all of the original sequel's flaws, it didn't manage to kill the franchise. (They were already making the TV show and working on the script for the third movie a year after its release.) The fifth movie, though, pretty much salted the earth for future entries. The Source, from the director of The Lawnmower Man, was supposedly first intended for theatrical release, but it eventually got the Sci-Fi Channel Original treatment. And that's exactly where it belonged.
As for the TV show, it started off kinda weak, but it drastically improved with each season. The fourth and fifth seasons are especially good. But then the lead actor wanted to move on, and the result was a sixth season that barely features him and a one-season spin-off called The Raven that never shows him even in a cameo. He did agree to come back for Endgame and The Source, so there is some closure for the series--albeit terrible closure that manages to be worse than most of the TV show that spawned those sequels.
haah the source hadn't even heard of it!! As for the TV we never gave it a chance and it seems like it has quite the following and allot of people liked it. Might have to give it a go one day. Thanks for all the good info.
@@FrightfullyForgotten The Source is currently "free with ads" on UA-cam, but even watching it for free might be too high a cost.
The TV series is underrated
So we should give it a chance?
@@ricjones3418 okay good to know, totally remember it being on, but never paid much attention to it. Figured it would be along the same lines as that horrible Crow tv show ahah.
@@FrightfullyForgotten
It's completely unwatchable.
@@FrightfullyForgotten
Incredibly,
The Crow series is better than
the Highlander series.
It's that bad.
It's worse than Highlander 2.
It was a big deal in Europe for sure! You guys accent aas waaay better than mr lambert😅😅
