Terrific insight into the lens business. I'm a lot better informed as I buy my next pair of glasses next week.

Does the lens need to go through an auto etch machine after loading on clips/racks to get cleaned before hitting the hardcoat machine? In your video the satisloh machine does the stripping of factory hardcoat, so if stripping and hardcoat is carried out in one machine does it still need another cleaning prior?

Our satis machine does a strip process on the left side of the machine and a primer and hard coat on the right, it’s an all in one strip and dip process…. We do prep the lenses before loading them on the clips by cleaning them with some alcohol and lint free cloths…. After the hard coat is applied they cure in a thermal oven ….then they are ready for the AR coater ….as long as that AR coater as ion etching they are good ….if the machine doesnt have ion etching it would need some form of etching (such as an ultra sonic wash or plasma) or else the coating stack won’t stick

Thank you for sharing this. I have come across SCL machine that has strip option on the left of the machine just like the sati machine. But after loading the lens on rack they are put through an auto etch machine for a techniwash bath and after that process it goes through the SCL machine where again it goes through a techniwash bath+acid neutralizer+DI water. I just can't get my head around why do we need a separate etching process when it is available on the SCL machine. Not sure if I have explained it enough?

Some processes call for an external strip maybe that’s the idea…there are some benefits to an external strip first. We have had issues where we have contaminated our coating do to a wrong lens or an incomplete strip going into the coating ….an external strip allows you to audit a “naked” lens before it goes in the coating …. We have a new optimal machine on the way and I plan to do an external strip process fist with this machine

You started off by saying that poly carbonate is a soft plastic????
My friend you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about

When it comes to impact resistance poly is ideal...i believe they use poly to make bullet proof glass..However uncoated poly scratches at the touch of a fingernail. thats why Poly lenses will always have some kind of hard coating on them....Maybe i worded it incorrectly in the video!

Ok now I understand because polycarbonate is probably the strongest plastic

it is a soft plastic and thats why if left uncoated, it scratches very easily
