- In this video I'm going to demonstrate how sketch a landscape using pen and ink and water color. The materials and process shown here is best suited for working in the field.
Here are the materials I'm using:
Pen: Opus 88 Fantasia with a #5 full flex nib from FPnibs
Ink: DeAtramentis Document Brown
Sketchbook: Hahnemuller watercolor sketchbook willed with light grey hot-press paper
Watercolor Palette: "Napoleon" mini palette by Whiskey Painters
Watercolors: DaVinci Brand. Ivory Black, Burnt Umber, Hooker's Green, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Venetian Red, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow light, Chinese White.
Brushes: Escoda "Ultimo Travel Brushes", size 10, 6, 4.
Learning a new skill takes time, so it’s a perfect length for a video. Thank you!
You’re very welcome! More long format instruction to come.
Hi Mark. The video turned out to be excellent. There is the necessary information, there are tips for practice. The background music was wonderful. Such pharma is interesting. Keep up the good work. We are waiting for your new videos. Thank you very much.
My pleasure! I’m glad you found this video useful. More like it on the way!
This channel makes me so happy
I'm happy it does!
The length works for me. Thank you for another insightful video.
You’re welcome! Glad to hear that you found the format effective.
Lovely video and description of the process. Additional thanks goes to your bank for enumeration of the materials used! And would love to see more content like this😊
Thank you so much! More content like this on the way.
I like this lesson very much. I’m going to watch it again and again.
Thank you!
Great to see when you drop another video… thanks!
My pleasure!
Absolutely loved it. I was happy to see you had posted a new video, especially since line and wash is my main interest. And I also live in Spain. So I made sure I had half an hour of time when I wouldn't be disturbed to enjoy it fully. Please do more! And thank you for putting in the time and effort to share your skills and knowledge with us. Mucho appreciated!
Thank you! Sigh, I'm jealous. I usually spend several months a year in Spain, since my wife is from there, but as for living there, I'll have to wait for retirement. Saludos desde Los Angeles!
Thank you Mark. Appreciate your detailed commentary and tips. This type of demo is exactly what I find most helpful to advance my learning. Feel so fortunate to have found your station on UA-cam. I often rewatch videos in your playlist and share them with artist friends. They are an invaluable resource.
My pleasure! I'm so glad this video was useful to you. I'll keep them coming!
Awesome stuff! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Marc, you don't have to worry about this video format, it's outstanding. Great tutorial, so much information and a great painting! Thank you. I'm looking forward to many other videos like this.
Have you ever thought about making a live transmission event? Drawing, making something and talking?
Thanks for the supporting words! I'll have to look into live events. My viewership seems to be spread all over, and I'm not sure what the optimal time for it would be.
Thank you so, so much.
The video was not 30 minutes, not for me at least as I had to pause it countless time to either rewatch parts of it, or in order to try some of the things you were doing and explained so well. I don't know how long it took me to finish but it was still not enough to fully appreciate it. I will watch it again.
You're welcome! I'm glad my video was dense enough with information to deserve reviewing.
Great video thanks for the work
My pleasure!
Looking forward to more videos from you Marc, awesome as always and thank you for doing this.
Thank you! More coming soon!
This video taught me so much. Thank you. ❤
I'm glad it was helpful too you!
Perfect!
Thank you!
Loved this format, more please 😍👌👍
Thank you! More on the way!
Bravo ! This is exactly what I needed. More of your long, well- explained format please.( Especially since you are using some of my favourite supplies too.) Great music and impeccable instructions make this a delight. Some things need far more than a short format to instructions properly and digest. This will bear repeated watching. Keep up the good work and a thousand thanks.
Thank you! These long format videos really feel like the best way to convey information, and I'll be making more of them.
I'll come back and watch this video if/when I go back to realism.
Thanks. Hopefully this video will bring you back to the fold. :)
Do you prefer the Opus 88 over the Pilot Falcon for drawing? I'm considering getting one of them, but I'm still unsure. I currently use a Lami Safari F and a TWSBI Eco M, but I'm in the market for a nib with a little flex, nothing crazy like a Zebra G nib though.
Opus 88's come with high quality steel Jowo nibs that are great for drawing, but don't have a lot of flexibility. The nib I'm using here has been modified for flex. If you're looking for a reliable pen with slight flex, the falcon is perfect. I would also considerate Pilot custom 74 soft fine, which is a little more affordable.
@@mkompan Thanks!
That’s so good to watch. Many people are solely looking at urban sketches but there Marc goes, landscape! Thank you so much, I truly enjoyed it
You’re very welcome! “Urban sketching” is just landscape in an urban setting, no?
Thank you! I always learn something from you. 🙏☮️❤️🖖
My pleasure!
I loved this video - thank you so much for all your interesting mixes and technical explanations. Greetings from Germany - Renate
Thanks so much! Greetings from Los Angeles.
I have many opus 88 , they are available many places . One of my favorite. Pens
They’re wonderful. Unfortunately several of my favorites have been discontinued, the Fantasia being one of them.
Great and simple color harmony. Thanks for inspiration.
You’re welcome!
The color mixing advice is fantastic here. The bit about always mixing greens from blues and yellows, in specific pigments you were using just fantastic. Also very concrete advice is to how to avoid monotonous drawings. To illustrate all this your finished work is much more alive and interesting than the original photograph, but befitting the very old architecture and environment.
Thank you for the compliments. It funny how a few simple color mixing recommendations can make all the difference.
Hey Marc, great video. I was wondering if you had any good suggestions for a smaller-sized, portable sketchbook that ideally could fit in a jacket pocket and would be suitable to use with fountain pen ink, watercolor, or any other wet media. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, I mostly sketch with a twsbi fine or stub nib if you know of anything specifically that works well with twsbi's. Thank you very much!
Thanks! I really like the Talens Art Creations sketchbooks. They come in a large range of sizes, as small as 5.5x3.5” and are filled with a very nice off-white paper that takes all of wet media.
Thanks Marc
I like the sound of your future plans for the channel with a mixture of long and shorter videos.
My pleasure! Thanks for the support.
Great video and commentary! Thanks. I dig the format.
Thank you!
Thank you Marc, another good one. Are those your basic EDC palette colors?
You’re welcome! Yes, this is my usual palette.
@@mkompan Thank you
This was great, again. In general, I'm not a huge fan of longer videos, since the amount of information included, often does not corelate with their length. But, this doesn't apply to you, Marc, in any way. I find your videos to be always filled to the brim with useful and high value stuff, that somehow perfectly aligns with issues, I'm currently struggling with, in my art. Always worth to watch, regardless how long, or short. Thank you, I appreciate your generosity.
Thank you! I also have no patience for those videos that feel unnecessarily stretched out. I'm glad this one didn't feel that way.
Thank you Marc! Very rich in wisdom and teaching as always!
You're very welcome! Thanks for the kind words.
