A battle of opposites. A theater trained actress who made it on talent, and one who rose through the ranks in Hollywood based on looks, and who she slept with.
Miss Bette Davis started out in a small theatrical company, and within a year made it to Broadway. When she reached Hollywood, it took years to get out of small parts and finally make it to stardom.

Bette Davis was not just the Queen of Warner Bros. She was, IS, the best screen actress of all time! Bette could portray a dastardly psychopath and you'd STILL love her! Joan wound up in "Trog," a real embarrassment.
Joan was drop-dead gorgeous in the thirties whereas plain Bette was the finer actress; it was her acting that Joan admired most about Davis. Imagine Crawford playing Miss Moffatt or Queen Elizabeth I of England? She'd have been laughed off the screen. Davis did remark, however: "Boy, did that dame have a face". Crawford was already an established star in 1931, the year Bette made her film debut in a potboiler called "Bad Sister". Watching Davis in this silly melodrama, one could never guess she'd be the winner of two Oscars and by 1939 would be the Queen of Hollywood...
Excellent video! I always tended to like Bette a bit more than Joan, but they were both great actresses! ❤️ Bette seemed to have more of a fire in her performances.
I love Bette Davis. She is my all time fav actress. Starting to appreciate Joan Crawford’s acting. In life no one is going to like everyone. Sometimes unfortunately others pick and choose sides and keep the BS going. I am sure some of the reason there was so much disdain about how these ladies felt about each other was because Hollywood gossips probably pit them against each other always trying to compare them to each other. Making statements like Joan was prettier or Betty was the better actress etc... of course that fueled the feud. But whatever it was they are both considered great actresses and had lots of actresses look up to them. I personally don’t understand why Joan disliked Bette but I can Understand by some of what I heard why Bette had issues with Joan. Either way at the end of the day they have both left us with great movies to enjoy.
Personally, I think BOTH actresses don't think they were good enough in their line of work so as result, they both saw each other as a threat for qualities they lacked. Something I think Ryan Murphy nailed perfectly in ''Feud'' during the scene where they both clashed over each other's flaws and qualities.
Both, gold on screen, but I would imagine very difficult women, not really ideal mothers, they have to be first, and its hard when people get in their way!!!!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
THEN I GUESS I WORKING MOTHERS ARE TERRIBLE.? IS THAT UR POINT? THAT MUST INCLUDE YOUR MOTHER TOO. OTHERWISE,, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE MADE THAT COMMENT. & IT'S ONE OF 2 THINGS. Hi Age of Vintage, WOW another fabulous story of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. It was no secret in Hollywood that these two actresses just couldn't get a long. They fought over movies, men, & just who was the most popular actress between them. Apparently it was no secret Joan Crawford loved the men but she had quite a penchant for the ladies as well. It was rumoured that Joan actually had a secret crush on Bette & had fallings out with the press that it wasn't true. They both played a brilliant part in "What ever Happened to Baby Jane " certainly a Hollywood great. I do think there was probably more to their story, however neither of them wanted to not be considered for a role, so they pushed each other just far enough. They did argue & fight over many male film stars. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺💛💛❤❤💜💜💖💖🎬📽🔪⚘⚘💋
Joan Crawford had "slept her way to the top"? What a scurrilous insult to a wonderful actress, where is your proof? I find this accusation offensive and groundless.
In my opinion Joan was the winner in the looks department & Bette was arguably the better actress... ...but I bet they were both self-obsessed "Prima Donnas!"
I dont know that mutch about Joan, but i have heard several times that Bette could be hard to deal with , having a bad temper and all that but she facsinates me, her Charisma and acting was very good and for me personally she was the better looking, more feminine face.
I VERY much enjoy your content. I do however, wish that you could do a timeline or sequence in order of event happening. It feels like we’re sort of all over the place. And then often the pics don’t line up with what your saying and I get a little mixed up. But again, I am enjoying the videos. Can’t get enough of the old stuff.
I'm a Joan fan. The issue regarding Franchot Tone always intrigued me because Joan had already been involved with Tone & made two films with him prior to him working with Bette. How did Bette not know Joan's history with the man when Joan was the biggest female of that time? Joan & Franchot had starred in Dancing Lady & Sadie McKee by the time he worked with Bette. To be perfectly honest the whole feud was Bette's doing. She was jealous of Crawford. From the beginning in the 30's Davis was jealous of the attention & leading men because Joan was the bigger star. Bette felt superior to Joan because as she put it, "I'm an actress. Joan's a movie star." Later in life Bette even admitted she wished she'd been, "half as beautiful" as Joan when asked about Crawford. I don't think there were ever any ill feelings on Joan's part toward Bette until Bette initiated the whole thing. I'm not fond of Davis. She makes Baby Jane unwatchable for me with her overacting and shrill voice. I only watch because of Joan.
I have read that Bette was jealous of Joan because she felt that she was not as beautiful AND Joan was jealous of Bette because she was insecure about her poor background. But the feud was not all Bette's doing, and anyways was there an actual feud or was it more a making by the men controlling the studios???
Betty Davis was sane & Joan Crawford was Not. Crawford was also a jealous, mean Narcissistic person who couldn’t handle anyone that got attention besides her. Betty Davis stood up to Crawford & she didn’t like that
Joan said that she was trying to secure her daughter's role so the producers wouldn't permanently replace her. Ratings actually went up because of Joan's appearance.
@@karenwallace9156 Christina Crawford wrote that horrible book about her mother because Joan Crawford cut her out of the will. Christina made up a lot of stuff to della book and a movie. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Professional jealousy. Both did similar roles, both were competitive over their careers, I suspect. Other than that it suited the film studios and the press for people like this to supposedly hate each other. Seems a few men got into the act as well.
Team Joan here. She may not have had Bette’s abilities, but she worked hard to make her films the best they could be, even when she was given mediocre material. I admire her work ethic and commitment to improving herself.
Both were great actresses. I must say, Joan could pull off real emotions With tears ie. Mildred Pearce. Bette was also great bit she was the same character and mannerisms in her movies. Especially when she played Queen Elizabeth. She walked the same in all her movies. That certain swag she had.
Davis always struck me as real. What you see is what you get. Joan struck me as a pretentious phony . She lacked any kind of sincerity. It seemed to be all about image for Joan.
"Supposedly" Bette once confided to Joan that she never celebrated Christmas as a child, which Joan immediately responded, "That's because Jesus wasn't born yet" !
Both of them should have worked with each from the start, then they probably would have grown into liking and respecting each other. I imagine Bette and Joan working together from the time when they were young that it would draw a lot of viewers attention. Especially if they were to work against each other.
Actually they could of been good friends, but they were too much a like. They were jealous of each and I don't think they were even aware of it. Being Top Stars wasn't enough. Each wanted it all, and when your so much alike, there comes an expolsion.
Both had ESTJ bossy to the max mbti personalities. They are the kind of women that can bite the head off of a nail. They have a super dominating personality. They will rule you and everyone else around them. Whether you want them to or not. They enjoy crushing people under their heels. Watching 2 women like this go after each other is like going to a monster truck rally, you don't know who is going to win, but it doesn't matter...you know it's going to be an exciting show.
I turned off the video when it got to the part that said "Joan slept her way to the top" what a shit thing to say. Ive never watched one movie of hers over and over like I have because of who I thought she slept with.
If there really was a rivalry or feud between Bette and Joan it was ironically AFTER they made Baby Jane together. Before that you could barely call themselves rivals since they had such fundamentally different acting styles. Bette knew from early in her career that she was not going to be anywhere near the great beauty that Joan was, and Joan knew though she was a good actress, she could never compete as a character acter like Bette. After they made Baby Jane, it was a minor feud but nontheless Bette and Joan to the end of their days, repeatedly made it clear in public that they both saw each other as expert professional actors, always knew their lines, always were on time. In a rather ironic twist, Bette Davis would have a develop a deep hatred for someone and that was Faye Dunaway, who would later then play Joan Crawford in the notorious biopic "Mommy Dearest".
Also Betty turned down the role of Mildred Pierce and Joan won an academy award and they said Betty was mad and blamed the studio for her not getting that part
Bette turned down that part because she didn't want to work with Michael Curtiz again. Also, she felt the mother was too weak, and under no circumstances would she tolerate the behavior that the daughter (Veda) displayed. Bette wasn't the only one -- several actresses, among them Ann Sheridan and Rosalind Russel, turned down the part. The role she did regret not playing was the one that Crawford played in Possessed (1947).
@@zacblake9249 yes she turned the role down but when Joan won the academy award she got mad and blamed the studio president for letting her turn the role down, said that they should had told her this was academy gold
I don't know, but everyone is as they are, one cannot change that, but I have always found Mrs. Crawford's personality much more interesting than Mrs. Davis, not only as a person but also as an actress. I have always disliked Mrs.Davis's way of being extremely arrogant, pretentious, always with that feeling of superiority.
I too don't have the impression they truly hated each other. I think they disliked each other, although Joan truly did admire Bette as an actress. I don't think Bette took Joan seriously enough to 'hate' her, no mater how much she poked jokes at her expense. I will say I was shocked that in This N' That--which was largely written as a rebuttal to B.D.'s My Mother's Keeper--Bette STILL voiced support for Christina Crawford and Mommy Dearest. I was actually disgusted.
At this stage of the game, the overwhelming reason Davis is still remotely relevant among younger fans is because of the Crawford connection. Meanwhile, Crawford, in no small part due to her having been such a fascinating creature both within as well as beyond the Hollywood context, has mushroomed into a multi-million-dollar industry of her own among younger fans.
Joan didnt stand a chance with Hurricane Bette during baby jane. . But joan was tough too and a survivor and she just side maneuvered bette at 1963 academy awards to accept the awardsfor anybody who couldnt be there. Bette. Never forgave her for this insult, which is what it was

Bette fan here, however, Joan had her moments. But Bette was willing to dump glamour, I.e. The Catered Affair, a prime example. Joan always had to look good. Also in interviews Joan had a phony resonance to her, like she was playing a part in front of the camera. In contrast Bette was down to earth and real. JMO
Yes, that is what. Made Bette a better actress, she could play anything, Joan had to always be glam
@@misspudding12 Except she wasn't always glamorous in her roles. Like. . Strange Cargo , Possessed , A woman's face & Rain. To name a few.
I like your videos even tho you tend to draw out your story with tangents and repetition !
Talk of repetition...You said it!
The reason for the feud was simply because they were both to much alike. It's like they were twin sisters in a sort of way. Mrs. Crawford's birthday was March 23 and Mrs. Davis birthday was April 5 they were both (Aries). Thats why they were so jealous of each other. Example: My son is a Leo and so is his dad and they both bump heads alot. They are to much alike. Sometimes trying to figure out the hardest thing can sometimes be the easiest thing. I bust this wide open.😁😁😁😁
I don't believe in astrology. Bette looked down upon Joan because of her working class background and that she never went to some high class acting school.

My daughter told me she is this way because she already knows that the answer is no so she prepares herself so she doesn't get her feelings hurt. A battle of opposites. A theater trained actress who made it on talent, and one who rose through the ranks in Hollywood based on looks, and who she slept with.
Which one of them came from theater?
Miss Bette Davis started out in a small theatrical company, and within a year made it to Broadway. When she reached Hollywood, it took years to get out of small parts and finally make it to stardom.
Nonsense. You don't last for 45 years because of some alleged relationships you had early on.
They both had very full lives. Doubtful one ever gave the other much of a thought.
I love Betty Davis, great actress. Joan Crawford not so much.
Cat fights between women have been around for ever.
And war is men being BFFs?
Edited... Actually... It really starts at 1:40 but isn't accurate. The start was in 1933 not 1935. Probably best to get the info elsewhere.

Me too! Joan was much more glamorous, sophisticated and prettier than Bette!!
Davis was a better actress.
Team Bette here!
@@vinnieviddivicci5459 Not necessarily. A lot of Bette Davis's acting now , at times, looks very stylized, stagy, and old-fashioned... often worse towards the end of her career. While Joan Crawford's was though at times s t a g y earlier in her career, seemed to become much more natural as time went on...
@@kjgammon1658 - I'll admit that Davis became almost a self-parody and gave some lousy performances towards the end. But so did Crawford: Trog, Beserk, Straight Jacket?
Bette Davis.
Ive always been a Ms Davis fan, dont ask me why but shes always resonated with me..
Where as Ms Crawford (even though she has a simalar appearance to my paternal grandmother now that I look at her fotos shes when she was younger) she has never resonated with me. But I loved my gran very much.
Team Bette!!!!!💓💓💓💓💓
There was definitely professional jealousy between Bette and Joan, especially when the both ended up at Warner Brothers
Because they love each other!
Let the past be the past these too have been dead for over 30 years now. I just don't understand these feuds at all over a man. Move on no man is worth fighting over for
Totally agree, no mister will come between me and my sister!!
The fact people are still interested in their relationship is an amazing tribute to both of them!!
Bette Davis I think,,,,, if I had to pick 👍👍💙👊😎🔥😘zane
I love them both too and Would love a historical rewrite where they are friends but maybe their performances in Baby Jane are so incredibly scary and heart breaking because of their animosity. I do believe at heart They really were kindred spirits. Oh, and you have some great photos I've never seen!
BETTE was Always the more petty & jealous one. Do proper research.
Bette Davis was not just the Queen of Warner Bros. She was, IS, the best screen actress of all time! Bette could portray a dastardly psychopath and you'd STILL love her! Joan wound up in "Trog," a real embarrassment.
They both Aries , divas , angry women driving by ambitious and jealousy .
They were two women making it in a man’s world.
Youmna Wehesh:: Women this sign are full of fire!!!!!!!
Excellent video! I always tended to like Bette a bit more than Joan, but they were both great actresses! ❤️ Bette seemed to have more of a fire in her performances.
2 Legends 😁
Absolutely. :)
I personally don’t understand why Joan disliked Bette but I can
Understand by some of what I heard why Bette had issues with Joan. Either way at the end of the day they have both left us with great movies to enjoy.
Bette Davis is the side Im choosing...Bette Davis NEVER beat her children
Davis!
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were quite talented as actresses may they both rest in peace.
Both of them were Aries.
I choose Bette Davis over Crawford anyday,
i think joan made a pass at Betty and she hated it!!! lol
There was a bit more to their "feud" than that.
Joan Crawford stole franchot tone from Bette Davis.
No, she did not. Joan and Franchot were already an item when Bette came on the scene.
That's sad Joan couldn't get nominated. She had to accept for others
Joan won the best actress award in 1945 for the movie, Mildred Pierce.
SHE ACCEPTED ANN BANCROFTS. AND KEPT IT FOR A WHOLE YEAR! WHAT A WACKO, MAN. 🕸🕷
Terrible mothers.
I feel like, you know everything about Hollywood! 🙂 Thank you for your comment Ruth! ❤️
@@ageofvintage2106 Thankyou for acknowledging my comment, you are just the best love Ruth 💋💋💋
Joan Crawford had "slept her way to the top"? What a scurrilous insult to a wonderful actress, where is your proof? I find this accusation offensive and groundless.
It is true and she did porn…look it up.
They were both really messed up. They deserve each other.
In my opinion Joan was the winner in the looks department & Bette was arguably the better actress... ...but I bet they were both self-obsessed "Prima Donnas!"
True!!!!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Not to me, her face was too hard
Both awesome actresses with Bette Davis being better than anybody of her era including Kate Hepburn
I dont know that mutch about Joan, but i have heard several times that Bette could be hard to deal with , having a bad temper and all that but she facsinates me, her Charisma and acting was very good and for me personally she was the better looking, more feminine face.
Beautiful jaw line, perfect.for pictures. B.D. not so striking.
Who the hell would fight over Francot Tone?
@@garymazzeo3490 REALLY.😁 COULDN'T ACT. ALWAYS LOOKED ANGRY, & I DON'T SEE HIM AS HANDSOME? I WONDER WHAT IT WAS? 🤔
I couldn't believe they would fight over a man. 😂
But who was nominated for the Oscar?????
Betty Davis was sane & Joan Crawford was Not. Crawford was also a jealous, mean Narcissistic person who couldn’t handle anyone that got attention besides her. Betty Davis stood up to Crawford & she didn’t like that
You know so much about Bette, but can't spell her name!
I love Bette Davis
Franchot Tone was the biggest reason why Bette hated Joan so much.
I am on Betty Davis side Joan is a horrible person ,Took her daughters job when Christina had surgery.Lousy Mother.
Joan said that she was trying to secure her daughter's role so the producers wouldn't permanently replace her. Ratings actually went up because of Joan's appearance.
@@harperstacey9604 THAT'S RIGHT. ANY MOVIE, THAT IS " BASED" ON TRUE STORY,, IS ALWAYS DRAMATIZED. IT SELLS. 🤑
@@karenwallace9156 Christina Crawford wrote that horrible book about her mother because Joan Crawford cut her out of the will. Christina made up a lot of stuff to della book and a movie. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Joan Crawford took care of Franchot Tone after he got sick & before he died. She took him into her home & cared for him.
SO WHAT. PEOPLE DO THAT ANIMALS.🐷
Too bad she didn't care for the children she bought from Georgia Tan!
They didn't hate each other!
Professional jealousy. Both did similar roles, both were competitive over their careers, I suspect. Other than that it suited the film studios and the press for people like this to supposedly hate each other. Seems a few men got into the act as well.
Let's face it, both unpleasant bitches, both top actresses.
Was it because they were both in love with the same man? Always be Team Joan
wicked witch of the north vs wicked witch of the west. Could only lead to friction...
I think the question is…….who did Bette Davis like?
George Brent, Claude Rains, Betty Lynn, et al.
Davis always struck me as real. What you see is what you get. Joan struck me as a pretentious phony . She lacked any kind of sincerity. It seemed to be all about image for Joan.
"Supposedly" Bette once confided to Joan that she never celebrated Christmas as a child, which Joan immediately responded, "That's because Jesus wasn't born yet" !
hahahahahahaha WOW!!!!
They both had earlier feuds that were probably more important to them. For Bette, it was with Miriam Hopkins and for Joan, Norma Shearer.
Both of them should have worked with each from the start, then they probably would have grown into liking and respecting each other. I imagine Bette and Joan working together from the time when they were young that it would draw a lot of viewers attention. Especially if they were to work against each other.
Petty and Messy....wow really?
Actually they could of been good friends, but they were too much a like. They were jealous of each and I don't think they were even aware of it. Being Top Stars wasn't enough. Each wanted it all, and when your so much alike, there comes an expolsion.
I LOVE them both
Both had ESTJ bossy to the max mbti personalities.
Yes. It builds ..the vitriol.
I am on the TRUTH’S SIDE🎉🕊♥️
I think Bette had moe erotic energy and magnetism.
Geez, get to the story already. Still nothing after almost 2mins.....I'm outta here

I gave up at 3 minutes.
When Mommy Dearest came out, Bette Davis publicly spoke _in defense_ of Joan Crawford. That should say everything about the authenticity of the book.
Bette 😍
I turned off the video when it got to the part that said "Joan slept her way to the top" what a shit thing to say. Ive never watched one movie of hers over and over like I have because of who I thought she slept with.
Despite the seemingly prettiness, why do I stl picture them as the classiest women?
Joan…. All the way
At this stage of the game, the overwhelming reason Davis is still remotely relevant among younger fans is because of the Crawford connection.
Bette. Never forgave her for this insult, which is what it was
They were both mean ole things.
