Florian Larousse is part of a rising crop of young French classical guitar virtuosos bound for stardom. Like his colleague Gabriel Bianco, Mr. Larousse is a product of Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris and a winner of the Guitar Foundation of America's International Concert Artist Competition. As the 2009 GFA winner, Mr. Larousse embarked on a 9-month tour of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and China. The performance captured in this film details his stop at Cal IV Entertainment in Nashville.
Mr. Larousse approaches each composition with a level of control clearly honed through countless hours of practice. His performance is extremely dynamic, full of drama and excitement across a very diverse program. He breathes life into each phrase and matches his expressiveness with precise execution and a deep, balanced tone. Mel Bay is proud to feature the talent and musical mastery of Mr. Larousse.
Such a hard piece to find played on guitar, great!!
Bravo!
Thanks for letting us what's appropriate and what's not. Yet, some people choose and define what's in tune or what's dissonant, other follow conventions. That guy plays on stages all over the world and you're just some dude trolling around on UA-cam.That puts things in perspective. As Philippe Néricault Destouches would say: "Criticism is easy, and art is difficult."
where can I get tabs for this masterpiece? :-O
This is a very tough piece to pull off, and he nailed it. Very precise but still has emotion.
@dizzyvonclutch The extra strings are attached with suction cups on the body, and friction pegs on the headstock. They are totally removable. The real question is finding a luthier who can perform such a modification. That guitar was made by Hugo Cuvilliez; he may modify existing guitars for the extra strings.
@TheMarcos772 i understand very little of what you said, but this interpretation is very nice. I quite enjoy it actualy. Im saying that the instrument, by deffinition, is out of tune. That's what equal temperament means. Everything is out of tune.
great sound!
Hmm, I play in the more 'modern' tuning, but I also notice that his guitar is totaly out of tune here. It's a shame, because the playing is good, of course.
Lovely performance, excellent guitar.
His name is Hugo Cuvilliez : he lives in France , in Marsanne . His guitar costs 6700 euros but you'll have to wait for almost one year !! (the name of this guitar is "la théorbure amovible").
It looks like it started out as a six-string guitar and then modified to accommodate the four lower strings.
There's a company called Guitar Solo Publications in SF CA. I can't post the web address here but im sure u can find it on google with the info i provided.
do you say that this interpretation is not appropriate? this instrument can't sound like in the past and and I am in favor of this.
It is a very well known fantasia by Rosseter. Brilliantly played, although I prefer it on the lute.
Sounds wonderful to my old ears. Maybe since retirement I'm not so fussy about other performers.
this is the only guy actually playing this masterpiece, unbelievable! this is a must for eveyone's repertory
Замечательное звучание гитары !!!
Wonderful!
what can a person say but Bravo- maestro!
you gotta love Dowland. I love the phrasing in this performance and the tonal/timbral control.
That guitar has been around Chernobyl too long....
Great technique! :)
very nice polyfony, great sound, perfectly played, greetings
Marvelous playing, thanks for posting this.
Gracias F. Larousse. Preciosa interpretacion ...
Прекрасно в техническом плане и очень прочувствовано. Удачи исполнителю!
So delicate and seamless! Bravo
superb, a thousand handclaps
Hi, I agree with the above comment, this is not by Dowland.
Also, as a lutenist, I'm amazed at how spoiled the human ear can get. I've been playing in historical temperaments for 2 years now and I can barely stand to listen to this. It is sublimely out of tune. It isn't the player's fault though, he is more than excellent. I'm amazed at how out of tune equal temperament can actualy be...
Regarding the performance, its a bit pianistic towards the end, which is highly inappropriate...
amazing performace
Who is the guitar by please?
@hansschepens1979 Hi, I'm afraid that's not true. Not every fretted instrument is in equal. Only fretted instruments that have non-moveable frets are mostly in equal. I own 5 lutes and all 5 are in different temperaments. Only one of them is in equal.
Because the lute has frets that are tied on, you can move them around to get better pure intervals. It is true that nylon stays more in tune than gut though...BUT ! fortunately for us lutenists there's other string materials that are better.
Красиво Изпълнение!!!!!!
此曲只应天上有!
You are magic, man!
It' not the strings that make the problem.I'm sure you meant frets.it is the fixed frets which are the problem.the lute, which this song was written for,has movable frets.the reason they changed to equal temperament was so they wouldn't have to move the frets
@MrChurulik krasivo da, no ako beshe izbral po razlichen repertoar, moje bi repertoar pisan specialno za kitara, togava shteshe da e oshte po dobre.
To those who claim this work is by Philip Rosseter: that attribution is based on a single Continental source from 1622, "Thesaurus Gratiarum" by J D Mylius. The piece there is titled "Gramatica Rosideri Angli generosi". Stylistically it has no resemblance to Rosseter, save for the fact it is late renaissance lute music. Incorrect ascriptions of English composers in Continental sources is quite common. I have no idea why certain people have decided *this* particular piece is the exception to the rule in terms of erroneous attribution of authorship.
David Norton For years I have been trying to figure this out, researched some and asked many but came up fruitless. Thank you!
@TheJaklaight You can remove the strings . It is an exclusive way to transform the guitar into a sort of lute . But it's pretty long to put these extra strings and it becomes easily out of tune ( Sorry for my poor english...) . It is hand-made and produced by a French who works for Florian Larousse . I can search for his name if you're interested .
"breathes life into each phrase" is really appropriate here, but not for good reasons. His heavy snorting, huffing and puffing makes it intolerable to listen to an otherwise great performance.
@firezblood00 "Could you please explain how it can't be the player's fault?"
It's not the player's fault because his instrument has fixed steel strings, so he has little influence on the temperament. Concerning intonation, do a google search on the article "Just Intonation in Renaissance Theory and Practice" by Ross W. Duffin for a decent and comprehensive introduction. The sound samples towards the end are particularly revealing how awfully out of tune equal temperament is.
@10stringGuitarist
hi,
Could you please explain how it can't be the player's fault?
To confess I am new to Music theory and am in the process of study - Objectively.
Please help.
Thanks.
Your remarks about temperaments would be valid were it not for the fact that he's out of tune period. I agree he's an excellent player but you let him off too lightly to say the poor tuning is not his fault.
Impressive. Bravo!
@10stringGuitarist actually every fretted instrument is in equal temperament, since frets run acros the neck and you cannot shift them trough modulations...the only thing you could say about it is that gut strings are not as in tune as nylons and the frequency differs (allthough that is not always true)
@10stringGuitarist for what the interpretation must be exactly like in the times of Philip Rosseter?? for my just must respect certain parameters for that sense of the music don't lost.
I enjoy very much the lute music and I like to this music with new instruments.
Браво !
It's hard to focus on the instrument. It's almost like looking at a double vision optical illusion.
Does anyone know where to get a copy of this piece, preferably in standard notation?
Anyone know what is hanging between the two middle, of the four, bass strings?
@jeff25303 isnt it a DESCENDING chromatic scale that we hear ?
That's a French way of speaking. Poor translation.
when did morgan freeman learn guitar?
not so out of tune. cool interpretation
LOL! I almost choked when I read this!
what kind of guitar is that?
Les compositions de Mertz sont bien meilleures!
very nice....
Excellent
Truss rod, maybe?
NO TODO VALE ,EEE
musica null'altro
Muy bueno
It intrigues why someone should go to all the trouble of adding bass strings to a guitar, then practice and practice to a very high level, and then perform a wonderful piece without bothering to tune the guitar first! The open B 2nd string is painfully sharp. The microphone doesn't help either because it appears to be creating a horrible wolf note on the fingered top E string G three frets up. I assume this guitar is meant to be tuned equal (ie well tempered).
Muy desafinado.
Too out of tune
Could we hear your recording? You should post it here...
