Building Gardens by the Bay in Singapore - 1 of 5 - Ep 098

- Get ready for one of the most epic tours yet-Gardens by the Bay in Singapore! The cloud forest conservatory is SO large, that we had no choice but to turn this into a 5-part series, with this first part establishing how Gardens by the Bay was developed, including some never-before-seen before-and-after shots. Prepare to have your mind blown on this architectural and botanical feat, which put Singapore on the map.
Stay tuned for the subsequent episodes, because Chad Davis and I will go in-depth into what's growing in the conservatory. If you're a bonafide plant nerd, you won't want to miss an episode.

Singapore had its 'garden city' project since 1967, still poor at that time, like a hot mudflat, but we still assembled a team of biologists and designers to not just plant in strategic locations but to bring in plants that did not exist in Singapore but came from places of similar climate like Brazil. It was a great success, we went from 55,000 new trees in 1970, 158,600 in 1974 and to 1.4 million by June 2014. We planted in all corners of our tiny island. Around 10 years ago, we upgraded it into the 'city in a garden' strategy, of course there is gardens by the bay as well as heavy subsidies for buildings who do vertical planting. The result of this is that we co-exist better with animals in the city, squirrels can now hop onto buildings like its a tree, climb up and live there. Water otters, previously not sighted, migrated here and flourished. When foreign politicians visit, like Obama, the government will gift them a unique orchid hybrid and name it after them. Plants are important!
Goddess Hegemone we're not worthy! We're not worthy! We're not worthy! 🙌 I sure miss that truly magical place. It's truly the gold standard on how to manage an urban green space. Hope the rest of the world is taking notes.
Breathtakingly beautiful. The closest to this I've been was Eden project in the south of England. I cried.. can't wait for the comming episodes

MY DREAM! I work here at Earthship Biotecture and we have some awesome indoor botanical cells out in the desert, I've also been to the biospheres, but this looks like all of that combined, and on steroids. Singapore is on my list now. Thank you for this awesome video, I cannot wait to see the rest.
I was out at Earthship in Taos many, many moons ago with my friend Paul America. (Maybe you know him).... :)
I’ve been here - it’s truly amazing!
I have been to GBTB and fallen in love with it, but now you made me an insane person who is in obsession about it. Out standing presentation 👏
So last year we visited Singapore, and also garden by the bay, since I wasn’t a big plant lover at that time I didn’t enjoy it that much. But now I wish I could visit again 😟. Big plant enthusiasts 💚

It’s beautiful I can’t wait for the other videos🤗
OMG! Best project ever!
Summer, I have followed you for a while. LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. I don't usually spend time to comment, but I have been wanting to ask you if you would use your platform to speak to and educate your audience about critical environmental topics facing humanity. Biodiversity loss, impact of climate change, why plants and insects are so critical to our environment etc. I know these are HUGE topics and no one wants to be preached to, but I cannot help but think most people would want some facts about the issues, especially people who love plants, gardening and our planet. Just something to think about. Thank you for all you are doing. Your passion for what you love comes through and it's so inspiring.
This is such an incredible video - the editing and footage is beyond. was also great to have chad be super enthusiastic and good rapport with you, his energy matched yours really nicely!
I’m so excited I can’t wait to see the four episodes of the cloud forest so interesting
I just love him. This whole series is wonderful.

Wow absolutely mind blowing ! I’ve only ever been to the Singapore airport and was mighty impressed by it ! Can’t wait to actually visit the country and the conservatory, thank you Summer for showing this. Lots of love !
I can’t wait to see the next episodes, thank you so much for sharing such a great experience
Wow there are some very clever and driven people around! The work and thought that has gone into this is mind boggling :)
a smaller air-conditioned glass flying saucer that crash landed in a botanical garden is at the Adelaide royal botanical gardens. it does not have a vertical garden island or skywalks more than one story high, but does have an elevated walkway that is close to the canopy level for many trees.
wow...i love seeing all these plants...thank you for sharing this video.
You should do a video on newly opened The Jewel @ Changi Airport, Singapore.
That. was. amazing! I never knew this existed and now I want to go yesterday!
I saw some of your videos, I am so impressed with you professional knowledge. You show a great passion and love for nature and plants, you should work in Singapore. And help it be a City in a Garden. I think the city would love to have you there!
That's very sweet of you. Hopefully the country will welcome me back when I'm there next..
It's so beautiful....! Tq for sharing.
love the informative series! I am blessed to be in Singapore to witness the different floral exhibits. (:
Wow! Just, wow👍😎
So much awesome!
the production quality is unbelievable
Really glad you noticed the upgrade :)
Gardens by the bay looks like a haven of all the plants that i like!!! Thank you for bringing this video to all over the world showcasing the magnificent wonders of plants and geniuses behind such a breathtaking scenery. I would definitely love to see it in person hopefully before i die. Thanks a bunch Summer! Lots of love from the Philippines :)
Amazing place!
Wow . Cool stuff summer
Thank you and your team so much!! These have been the best way to start my mornings :)
New one for the bucket list. Wish it wasnt so far away :(
In today's world, nothing is far away. If you live in the USA you'll probably be surprised how cheap it is to fly to most Asian countries. I live in NM and it's cheaper for a round trip and vacation to fly to japan than for me to fly to Florida!
Now I want to visit Singapore 😀
Wow I need to go here
Ive been there, and itsss sooo beautifull, i wana go there again😍
You are an inspiration. Thank you very much
I want to fly to Singapore just because of this!!!
Loving these new videos!!
cant wait for other episodes AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKHHHHHHHHHHHH
Very interesting. Thanks!!
Nice work Summer! The editing is well done too :)
glad you enjoyed!
First to watch this one! i'm a huge fan of you and your lush verdant channel! more power to you summer! hope you can also feature plants hailing from the pan tropic archipelago of Philippines! We got tons of diverse and endemic plant species here.
WOW!!
Excellent
You should visit Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg, Florida! It’s a 5 acre garden that is over 100 years old.
Welcome to my country Singapore
Speechless 🤤😍
Great video
that walk to cam at the beginning was intense
From the tropics? Bring a sweater, a bit chilly in there.

I can Suggest that you can also show case presentation for Singapore Changi International Airport latest attraction, Project Jewel.

Omg 😍😍😍😍😍😍
You have to go to the Eden Project in the UK
Are there any panels or plastic commercially available that do the same as their filter?

Begonia Rex "Escargot"
What's the name of the plant, dead center at 5:32? Is that a Philodendron?
What's up with the logistics for how they got those plants there?
What plant is that oene with big shiny leaves just under the fountain at 02:41?
I would love to know what kind of degree he has to have this career. I’m looking into plant degrees!
Where do you sign up to live here?! 🙊🌱😍🙋🏻♂️🌱🙌🏼
How do ya feed and water all the plants?
Do they import bugs and inspects? Or are trying to grow without natures help?
They use integrated pest management
Fucking Amazing!
Singapore has winter?
We are 1° North of the Equator, 30° thereabouts all year round🌞⛈
it's maintenance cost must be very expensive
Where's the music from?
Amazing, but please do not use “LIKE” after every other word, it’s like amazing like? Overall great video!

can someone tell me and explain the engineering term use in this structure. the glass paneling, the green waste burning for electricity (what does it called??) the cogent thing??? and the anti humidity system? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS!!!
You can google "Cloud Forest Dome" for specific queries
it is super impressive, but I am not sure on the energy requirements, especially burning of plants, open to debate!
