  • Allen 542QR Bike Rack Carrier Review: This is a review of the Allen Sports 542QR hitch mounted bike rack carrier. In this video I look at why I bought this bike rack versus buying a Thule or Yakima bike rack carrier.

    I just ordered one of these, it should arrive tomorrow. I have a Ford Escape and could not transport our three adult size bikes inside the vehicle, leaving us limited to riding around our neighborhood. A couple days ago a brand new two bike Allen 522QR popped up on Marketplace for $30 and I took a chance. I couldn’t be happier I did.
    That allowed us to transport our bikes to popular trails too far to ride to from our home. I honestly planned to spend quite a bit more on another brand, and bought the 522QR to suffice while researching different racks.
    We used it yesterday and when I got home I ordered the 542QR immediately. The rack has literally no movement in my hitch, also much sturdier and well built than I expected. We used it again today and I can’t wait to be able to get all our bike outside the vehicle.
    I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with the QR model especially if you have a 1.25” hitch like I do. I almost never purchase bargain priced items, this rack provides quality and features well above its price point.

    Are the 3 main component parts of the qr models interchangeable? The tube that sticks into the hitch, the middle tube and then the part that holds the bike?

    • @HowToThrifty
      @HowToThrifty  2 роки тому

      I'm sorry I missed this. Just saw your comment.
      I'm not sure if they are interchangeable. They certainly look similar.

    Thanks for the video, so with that lock mechanism it prevents the rack itself to wobble ? Thanks.

    • @HowToThrifty

      That’s the purpose of it, yes. The difference is noticeable if you don’t tighten it.

    That pin is all that is needed to secure the rack to hitch? I recall older versions using a nut and bolt or locking bolt.

  • @nocturnal1551
    @nocturnal1551 2 роки тому +1

    How do you loosen the knob that has the key part? I put my key in, turn to left and it will actually lock the spinning knob, but if I turn to the right, and spin the knob, it seems as if it just spins freely without loosening

    • @HowToThrifty

      Is it mounted on the hitch when you do this?

    Hello. I am deciding between Thule and Allen bike rack. I saw people comment the Allen rack spring pin that goes into hitch receiver pin hole broke, the locking mechanism fail after some time, or the rack broke when drive over bumps, dragging bike on highway. How's your Allen rack after 1 year so far? Any problem? Thank you.

    • @HowToThrifty
      @HowToThrifty  2 роки тому +2

      Vinh Le, thanks for reaching out.
      I've had no issues with the spring pin. I've scraped up the rack after going over some bumps/dips, but other than road rash it's doing fine.

    I just bought the 640QR model from ebay. I don't find mention of the model on allen website but seems very similar to this one.mine has rubber straps. Do you know if this is newer or older model? And any other difference?

    Did the rack ever damage your bikes? Or experienced swaying with the bikes on?

    • @HowToThrifty
      @HowToThrifty  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! Thanks to the anti sway twist mechanism at the bottom of the rack, it only has noticeable sway if you don't tighten it down enough.
      As far as damage to bikes question, I haven't had any damage from the carrier.

    I have the same bike rack.. I lost the keys and ordered new one. Can I still use the rack without locking it?

    • @HowToThrifty
      @HowToThrifty  3 роки тому

      You can still use the rack, it just won't lock into the hitch receiver and may wobble a bit when driving.

    Beware if you plan on using the lock mechanism. I locked mine and now it won’t come off. The knob either turns freely or is stuck. Turns out that this is a common issue with these
