Overview of Vaesen by Three Game Masters

- Every once in a while you come across a tabletop role-playing game that is really good. This is not a review of Vaesen, nor is this an actual play. It's more of an introduction of the game to those that know a little about it. Three people explaining why the like it, is maybe more accurate. Thank you to Harrigan, Phil McClory and Wayne Peacock for sharing their insights!

Are you going to play Vaesen soon?
I've been running Vaesen for 2 years. I encourage GMs to put extra thought into published adventures and to treat them as framework starting points. To let the premise shine, I expand each location's details and NPCs, anchoring them in Sweden's geography, culture, and history. As players are able to often guess mystery "whodunnits" too easily, I set up multiple issues - not just Vaesen - that capitalize on the adventure's locale, tone and themes. This all allows me to give more foreshadowing, clues, a sense of impending danger, and opportunities for players.
Good tips! Thanks for sharing.
Love this format -- always good to hear from multiple GMs. And thanks for the super tight editing Sean, zero dead air is very rare and must have taken some time.
Sean didn’t make a video on Vassen. He made a documentary.
In Danish and Norwegian "Vaesen" means "creature". In Danish it also means the collective properties and characteristics that make up something. So basically the same as "essence" which is what vaesen translates to from Swedish . Just had to throw that out there :)
The more you know...
One of the channel's best vids to date. The documentary style and the content are top notch. Having three knowledgeable GMs bring their take on the game and riff off each other was great! More like this please.
Thanks for having us on, Sean, and for the heavy lift and excellent job editing. Good stuff.
My buddies and I are about to start playing Vaesen soon. I’m really excited and this was an extremely helpful introduction to it.
Good luck with the game!
Great video! Vaesen has been on my shortlist of games to play for a while, this video has renewed my interest.
Really nice job with the recording and editing. Looking forward to seeing more videos in this format.
Thanks Mirko!
About to start playing Vaesen tonight and it's been a long time since I had this much fun developing a character background.
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it.
Sean, GREAT format and well done! I was a big fan of your and Brett's Gaming and BS podcast, but this is kicked up Good STUFF!
Great job with the editing!
Thanks for being part of if Wayne!
I have played in 4 sessions of Vaesen and loved it. Last night I ran my first session. I’m hooked and look forward to running many more. This video was great as it gave me good insight into play style and rules for the game. Thanks!
Awesome!
I like this format
🙂
I love the documentary style you got going. I can’t wait to play.
Well done guys. I'm working thru a solo campaign now and looking forward to a group mystery soon! Thanks!
Have fun!
I picked up Phil's adventure "The Drowned Man" and I'm looking forward to running it! :)
On behalf of Phil, thank you.
Great stuff. Thank you. I’m about to get started with my group. They were brand new to 5e this time last year and we have since played “Forbidden Lands,” ‘Raven’s Purge.’
I can’t wait to start Vaesen and I’ve also got “Symbaroum” on the back burner. We play 5e in between.
Lot of Free League goodness.
Symbaroum is a great one. I am a Player in a campaign in that setting and it’s so much fun. We played already for 2 years.
I can’t wait to try it out. Some of my friends gifted the rulebook to me for my birthday. And the more I read the more I fall in love with the setting. Almost a little bit sad that I probably will be the gm. Just because my current favorite books Protagonist would fit so perfectly in the world and It would probably be a lot of fun to play her as a Charakter in that setting. In my eyes it just fits sooo well
Now you need to play it and publish it here.
Btw, still waiting for Forbidden Lands season 2. 😅
I mean, out of the five of us, three of them in this video are in the game group so....you'd think we could make it happen.
Gotta get through CY_BORG first!
The *one* person waiting for that. We appreciate it!
@@harrigantube just let me know and I will definitely watch it.
@@harrigantube the one person who speaks. Definitely there are more people interested on it.
great video, nice to get some insight from GMs (never ran a game myself before but might give it a try with Væsen)
YES!! Give it a go. If it's not your jam after that, well, ok.
Thanks for this video. It was very informative and I liked the personal experiences.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great review. I love this game.
🙏
As a swede it is so fun to hear foreigners saying ”Väsen”. Especially ”Vasen” sounds funny since that litterally means ”the vase” in Swedish. ☺️ ”Väsen” should be pronounced as v[ass]en. Not ”vaysen”.
v ass en!
yup, gonna buy it
🤓🤘
This sounds so awesome
Vaesen derives from the Swedish word Väsen - A fictional creature in fairy tales or mythology.
This is really cool
🙏
I dont know what it is with Vaesen but I’ve played 3 separate one shots (I assume they were modules) and found myself checking the clock a few times … it’s a slow burn mystery and leans towards narrative gaming, and not much happened until right at the end… maybe I haven’t had the right GM? Or is it not really designed for one shots? Or maybe it’s just not for me?
The pieces of The Society does lend itself to longer campaign play, but certainly not required. Could be GM? Or, it may not be for you, and that's ok. Thanks for the comment!
