Hi Noah, I have this same lathe and have had it probably 30 years or more, but had not touched it for a long time. I recently set up a new shop in our new house and got back in the mood to do some turning. My lathe still works fine but the belt squeaks at some speeds. My main issue is it does not have enough horsepower or torque to turn bowls or anything very big. The squeaking makes me wonder if I might just need a new belt, and/or if I am experiencing a power loss due to a worn belt. I had been wondering if it were possible to swap out the motor for a more powerful one when I stumbled across your video. I had been thinking more about a regular electric motor from Harbour Freight (something like 2 HP), and wondering if that could be adapted to fit. I suppose it would be bigger than the original motor. I wonder if this were a possibility you ever considered before you found out about the treadmill motor? I was surprised that the motor you took from a treadmill actually packs 2 HP in such a small size. I'm not sure how I'd know what treadmill would even have the correct type motor, much less actually find one cheap like you did. Kudos to you for your success in this project. I'm curious if you could tell a noticable increase in power with the treadmill motor, and also if you are still using this lathe, etc. I see that your video is about 3 years old so I wondered about that. I am afraid a regular 2 HP electric motor, locally sourced, would probably be too big to fit, but maybe it could be made to work. If you are able to shed any light on any of my questions, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
If I could attach some photos here I would - It has been really nice. I use the lathe a few times per month. Mostly a bowl on the weekend or spinning sandpaper for other projects. I do want to make one adjustment and that's to acquire a tad longer vbelt, to add just a bit more torque on slow speeds.
nice fix but just to many wires hanging out, my pulley broke last night on the motor side its a delta 46-715 lathe gonna buy replacement pulleys from Grizzly and sell it. lol
@@noahseis9847 Hello Noah ,I believe it was $39.00 but not really sure it was a few months ago.It worked but the diameter is a hair smaller so you can't go top speed or the belt will fly off the pulley.
Very nice. I’m looking to do the same since finding that pulley assembly for these is so unlikely. Nicely done! 👍🏼
I just got one of these lathes for $100. It work flawlessly. But your vid is amazing for if anything happens to it. Thanks!
That's awesome!
A man of my own heart as where there's a will there's a way.
Well done Noah! Thank you for sharing this.

Looks like you are using a timing belt but not timing pulleys??
I used the original belt that came with the lathe
I'm wondering how the treadmill motor has worked for you this past year?

What was the cost on the replacement parts?
