I remember so well when Jana Novotna cried and the Duchess hugged her, I'm filling up just writing this. How sad that Jana was only 49 when she died of cancer. The Duchess of Kent has always been the epitome of grace and elegance.
I had the pleasure of meeting this lovely lady when I played music at Hovingham,her home before she married.It was around 1960/61.I was carrying musical gear into the marquee for an all night event.There was a beautiful young lady in the tent,wearing leather trousers ,a silk blouse and a Stetson hat.I asked her where she got the hat and she told me she had just returned from the rodeo in Calgary.We chatted for about 10 minutes after which I went out for my instruments.Someone said that the Duchess of Kent was there wearing a Stetson hat.I apologised to her for not recognising her,but she dismissed my apology.I discovered that she was a musician.She chatted to us all night and we all had breakfast together!I think I was around 20.I lost track of her later life,until I discovered that she had lost two children at birth and had suffered depression.She taught music in a Hull school,anonymously,as Mrs Kent.In spite of all of this,she was blocked from entertaining the teenage son of a murdered headmaster in the royal box!( she had obviously been trying to cheer him up…) True to herself she would not pull rank,
One of the most memorable moments of sport in 1993. That was really nice of the Duchess of Kent to do that for Jana , a very private moment in a public place ; it wouldn't hapoen today.
HRH The Duchess of Kent is wonderful.. shame she has turned to Satan and the Catholic church... hopefully she converts back to the way of God and the Church of England... praying for her
