    Approximately 700 million people worldwide currently live in extreme poverty, a state of severe financial and social vulnerability that robs many of hope and dignity. BRAC, the world's largest NGO, began a sustainable, multifaceted intervention called the Graduation approach in 2002. Since then, it has helped over nine million people escape extreme poverty. Now, Shameran Abed and BRAC Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative (UPGI) have an audacious plan to partner with governments to bring this life-changing program to an additional 21 million people by 2026. (This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

    The 4 steps (still watch vid)-
    Over a two year period, the plan does 4 things: 1- Meet a woman’s basic needs by giving her food or cash ensuring the minimum to survive. 2- Move her towards a decent livelihood by giving her an asset like livestock and training her to earn money from it. 3- Retrain her to save, budget, and invest her new wealth. 4- Help to integrate her socially. First into groups of women like her and then into her community.

    This is basically the "teach a man how to fish" saying, which the government, for some reason, usually never applies. I really appreciate that this talk emphasizes that the poor aren't lazy, they just weren't given opportunities & there's lack of resources. It's also a sustainable way of lifting people out of poverty, because the impact lasts long even without direct supervision.

    One of the small number speaches I found enjoyable on TED for a while.
    First it tell you a way to influence a world towards improvent and does't critisize others or blame for something.
    Second, the way they do it is actually right in extra poor countries. By giving support for people for a time, they give them time to reconsider their lives and acquire new skills. By raising the status of women, they can reduce birth rate and somewhat control overpopulation problem.
    Third, their business model is good. And it shows how wealthy people can maintain their wealth while doing things for greater good.

    Ending economic inequality and income concentration is key to solve this issue. In 2017, 82% of the generated wealth around the world went to the hands of 1% of the global population. There are approximately 2,000 billionaires in the world today. Since 2010, their wealth increased 13%, which is more than 6x the growth of the payment to workers in the same period. Billionaires saw their wealth surge by $762 billion in 2017, which is enough money to end all extreme poverty seven times over. I understand there are a lot of possible solutions to poverty issues, but limiting the individual wealth to reduce inequality seems obvious when you take a look at the numbers.

      No one becomes a billionaire without stealing other people's wages. If these billionaires paid their employees good salaries, they wouldn't have stayed billionaires. It is exploitation. The fact that these people got richer during a damn pandemic tells you what is wrong with the system.

      No, the problem is that poverty is baked into the monetary system.

    • @tunim4354
      @tunim4354 3 роки тому

      Lol these are pseudo intellectual theories. Wtf do you mean by 'poverty is taught'? You think people living on less than 2 dollars a day are taught to be hungry? These people have to start working from a very early age, most of them won't even have the time to go to school. And they will stay poor all their life because that's how the system is built. If you are not a corrupted person you won't become ultra rich. System needs to change, and you need to stop believing in these weird theories.

    • @samuelzev4076
      @samuelzev4076 3 роки тому

      Lamia Mahpara if it’s in the developing world then this doesn’t apply much but what it means is that you can’t get far in life financially by following the same thing other people are doing, go to school and get a job, you risk being dependent on other people for money and you don’t think on your own feet to explore other options of making money

    We need this guy in Russia. We have plenty of different programs which were to reduce poverty but none of them work well. One of them is called "social contract" which have been working in 21 regions of Russia during 7 years from 2013, the efficiency level of the program is around 9% that means only 9 percent of participants went out of poverty. Almost all the money (hundred millions of US dollars) are wasted. Moreover in general from all the money given by the government to help those in need only 25 percent of money reach the needing person/family...

    Good job! I have always wondered the best way to address poverty. In USA we have never done it correctly. I think that people need to ‘want’ to get out of poverty, that said you need to give them a path that they can achieve. Giving cash in for of welfare , seams for some to create a subculture that doesn’t cycle out of the poverty but keeps them in their comfort zones of expectations. I think we need to address basic needs, housing, safety, medical (health) and education. This is addressed here to some extent but not as a socially moving whole, it’s not assured and can’t be counted on. Treated as individual programs verses one program with a goal. Yes there will be plenty that will not break free but knowing you can would help groups like yours to reach out and guide people to a brighter future. Health care should be a given, food should be a given (how ever distributed _ soup kitchen is not bad) , housing might not be an apartment it could be a small tent city ( I have spoken to homeless that can’t handle 4 walls), eduction to how to get services , proper health practices, and higher education should all be a given. Safety , frontline police should be social workers first versus punishers , goal to make this a better place. There will be a need for second level police but if we don’t harden the people as well as the police in how we train them and our society, the problems should lessen. Break the norms, address the social problems more than the individual issue. Just a thought.

    It's disgraceful that so many people are living in poverty while others have more money than they could ever need. There is a great organisation called Lend With Care that allows you to lend money to people in some of the poorest countries. They use the loan to start or build up their business, and they gradually pay it back in small amounts until it's fully paid off. It allows them to buy whatever they need in order to build up a profitable business, and as they pay the loan back they know that they've done the work themselves without needing charity - this increases their self esteem, hope, and quality of life. These are people who already work incredibly hard and just need a temporary boost. The work BRAC does sounds amazing too, and it's great that they focus on so many different elements of a person's life, skills and wellbeing; it's a holistic approach.

    All humans represent humanity in why/when/how/where they all exist/live. Maybe next life we'll all do more than just contemplate or debate such ancient knowledge.

    I think people get influences from great nations initiatives, it will be anything, like space mission, then people show their interest in space, but they will be in the dark face of reality if a problem like you mentioned in not come on the front, let me give a very good example, Butan initiate the climate change issue in Paris in the year 2004, but nobody was influenced because it is just a small county and might they thought this as a stuff thing, but today if you look, the Bhutan is in limelight because of his early initiative towards the real problem, from this incident, I believe that your idea toward the poverty elimination will never go waste, till that, just struggle for right and struggle for right.
    Many Wishes from India!

    I presume a strong government as with good friends lift up those around them not tread them down
    Indeed sharing a burden will allow us to collectively carry much more
