Great heads-up warning Roster. Unfortunately most poeple that are into this hobby that want big power with tubes don't realize how lethal those big amps can be. I've known many people that has been electrocuted by tube amps of all sizes and the result is always very unforgiving. JTG is definitely one of the most knowledgable people in that field and learned a lot from some old-school guys that are no longer with us due to age. I've known Joe for quite some years and he's always treated me fairly.
Great video Sir!!! Some people don't know. Very informative! If you run big power, you should know how it operates. I put pool noodles on my high voltage lines for protection. Also ground, ground, ground everything!!!
Keep Your jewelry off when around a amp ,his necklace hit the tube ,and apparently amp wasn't discharged if you dont know what you doing ,stay out of a tube amp .the pics of the blowout arm were from someone else ,have to read the post it says that wasn't controller, that piece wasn't what killed him ,he was wearing necklace and it fell into tube.what Rooster posted is good guidelines to follow as well.
Another thing that SHOULD NEVER and NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN used for HV is a PL-259 AKA UHF connector. If for no other reason than they can all too easily get mistaken for one of the antenna /driver cables!!!
Great video and I wish there were more out there like it. I’ll never use a Millen connector and always run the high voltage wire through a braided sheath that grounds the RF deck to the power supply and THEN run that biznatch through a flexible piece of pvc conduit. Better be overkill on safety than 6ft under with no conditions. Thanks Rooster keep ‘em coming. -495 NWC
One thing that's never mentioned on these high power CB conversations. What type of effects long-term does it have on your brain/organs when you're exposing yourself to these high levels of RF from high power CB radio amplifiers? One thing that must be noted is that there must be tons of RF exposure from a high power CB amplifier, because most do not have antennas that are situated at a safe distance away so that the RF exposure level would be very low to surrounding living organisms. I'll probably get bashed for this comment. There's a reason why in America the safe level is 1.5 kW maximum for amateur radio use. Exposure levels are in a safe range. Multiply that by 10. You're rolling the dice on what it could do to your brain and your body, long-term. Cancer? Consider all the radiation like putting yourself inside a microwave. High levels of RF exposure cook you from the inside out. I couldn't even imagine somebody running multiple kilowatts in a vehicle with an antenna no more than 10-20 feet away from their brain through a thin sheet metal roof of a van or suburban.
This is a shocking video. Your information is timely, and well grounded. Many operators have much potential, but they should conduct themselves with safety first in mind. Do not resist this information.
Mine literally just arced on me this is the second time …I am done!!!! Amp is unplugged until I fix it I watched the arc climb up my ground wire til it exploded this time scared the living shit out of me!!! Ambilicul cord will be run direct !!!
I have blown three of these only using 4000 volts. They are junk. Now the old ones worked ok, but these now are not the same quality. Mine were arcing through to the case and splitting the connector. This was on a Drake L7. I built a new PS for it to run the 2 3-500ZG tubes at 3700v in CW and 4200v in SSB. I am still looking for a good connector. I can't wire the HV direct because the Power Supply is too big and just not feasible for me to do. So if anyone has a suggestion on what to use then please let me know. Thanks Alot,, 204 Florida aka Fuzzy Buzzard
I don’t have facebook but I’m assuming you’re talking about 125 Southwest Controller? I thought he passed away from the injury. I got the impression from this video that you’re saying he was injured.
the damage that happened to the hand pics I saw was wild ..one of them was trying to pull the bird slug out or something, and that's how his hand got eaten up? so wild I have a 3 tube z box in a 2 piece, I might just sell the damn thing.
Thanks. Not familiar with those connectors. I’m not even seeing how the wires attach. Doesn’t look like they way to go to me. I’m half scared of those things, even with the power off, caps hold a lot of energy.
Why is what still pending? I need more specifics. Maybe consider sending an email or a text message instead of making a UA-cam comment. You're fortunate that I noticed and responded. No shipping today as well, it's president's day
My Yeasu Amp is 220 and I don't touch it but to turn it off and on and tune it. I don't touch it if it's ready for tubes or whatever it may be it goes straight to my tech that's worked on them for many years and is 73 years old! He's one of the best I think and has always done me well! Be safe everyone!
I had friends try to tell me go with tubes, and i told them i am dangerous i play around too much with my 5 amps ,i love myself too much...its pills for life (Toshibas) that is....i have years before i use them up and switch to HG's great advice...i am not like a democrat ( power hungry)😂😂😂😂
I'm too lazy to operate a tube, and I'm too conservative to worry about high voltage issues that go with them. Sure, tubes can handle more abuse and higher SWR. But I'll take the lazy way out when it comes to amplifiers. Went with 1306 for Ham operations and go with 703's for CB to play it safe and lazy.
thanks for doing this video. this is why i run transistors. 2x8 is fine.

Prayers to the fellow hobbyist!! Be damn careful with tube boxes.. Even you know everything about them...
Redbone in Georgia fussed at me for a solid 30 minutes because I told him I was unscrewing my coax with my maco 300 running..... I'm grateful 🙏🏾

wprst part is your awake the whole time while getting fried...scary ass shit. Id unplug it to before messing with the hv connector.
tks for putting this info out...hope it helps someone...prayers out to all for safety....

Im still in the 3-500 z world and i still hard wire my high voltage. I also use or make a coax. With shielding.

Be careful people. Even if its on a house or tower etc. Thoughts & prayers to that person & his family. Did he pass away?

Mr 125 did pass away. There was three accidents with hv amps in the last month. The pictures are of one of the others that lived.
@@markmccarthy3710 thanks for the clarification. 🙏

One wire, goes to the center conductor of the piece that screws on
I seen the post and pictures.
👍
How do you get a jtg amplifier
He just builds when time permits now days. He's into a lot more than just radio

I ordered the upgrade power wire for my Stryker 955 v2 why is it still pending

They're gonna start cracking down on them ridiculous sized amps😢
Oh yea im sure they are 🤣🤣
