7 Devils was apparently named for the 7 mountains overlooking a single valley. Or maybe it was the 7 brothers who founded the area…nobody can be exactly sure on that one.
Personally I like Devil's Courthouse. Not a joke there, it just is a fascinating translation--the original 'court' goes all the way to Cullowhee, which technically means the same thing. Judacullah's (horned nature god) Domain ("court," in the kingly sense), Judculawi/Tsuthculawi got anglicized as Cullowee and translated as "Devil's Courthouse."

In Elementary school our class chose one of North Carolina's lighthouses to make a replica of. I chose Bald Head Island's lighthouse because no one chose that (also its shaped differently) and i did research at home to replicate it better, when my mom's boyfriend said "be careful, you may see something you don't want to see." and it took me years to figure out what he meant. i just thought it would be some grotesque image of a lighthouse growing on a bald man's head

I have to know how many of these towns were originally brothels along traveling routes for workers. I know there are at least two down in Louisiana north New Orleans
As a native, and being that is North Carolina given the religious history of the state I can assure you there's never been a 'brothel' in those locations, perhaps a stage coach stop with extra attentive service 😉, or a very friendly farmer's daughter with an appreciation for Tokens of affection.....🤷♂️ Remember this is a state that whose government has never fully exited prohibition, but then I don't think the citizens ever officially entered prohibition 🙃
My grandmother was born in Duck, my brother lived in Kill Devil Hills. The Mann family of Mann’s Harbor is in my family tree. We have good names on the OBX!

fun fact about the KDH (this is what ive heard when i lived in kitty hawk and went to school there) that back when the pirates were still a thing like black beard and shit, the shipwrecks would have their rum wash up on the sand dunes and ferment in the sun so it was said that the rum was strong enough to kill the devil hence kill devil hills. pretty fun story imo
Don't know if it's true, but Nags Head might have been named after an old wrecker trick of leading around a lame horse with a lantern by its head to fool boats into thinking it was a safe harbor - a lame horse will often bob his head up and down.
That's one of several local legends about KDH. Another one is that a local made a deal with the devil and to save his soul he tricked the devil into falling into a pit trap he dug in on of the local dunes (aka hills). And third legend that is actually probably the most honest is that in the days of sail the stretch of Roanoke Sound that was behind the modern day KDH would "kill the devil" to navigate.
