In swedish and other Nordic languages there is only the word 'dove', making it more and less confusing at the same time. When speaking English though, I tend to pick whatever works best depending on who I'm talking to. If I'm contacting landlords about keeping a pigeon, I'll call it a dove because people have more positive associations with the word, but when talking to friends and family, I'll call her a pigeon.
I typically use the words in much the same way, swapping back and forth depending on the situation and context. Though growing up the encyclopedias and birding books I had said rock dove not rock pigeon so I tend to lean towards that term out of the two unconsciously.
I've been looking into getting a pigeon or two recently, and your videos have been extremely helpful! It seems fairly hard to find information on keeping pigeons as pets, especially indoors, and I'm so glad I found your channel ^^
I’m so happy you’ve found it helpful! I had the same problem when I was researching to get Tallulah, it’s partly why I ended up deciding to make the videos.
In french we call pigeon for pigeon, tourterelle for wild dove (like Spotted dove) and colombe for white domestic dove or pigeon. I have a Spotted dove as pet (I saved it after an hurican). It’s wonderfull pet.
I just got a mourning dove two weeks ago and your videos helped me a lot in taming her and earning her trust, thank you for your work! You are incredibly underrated!
I always thought of doves as mini pigeons! Doves tail feathers are shaped into a point while pigeons' are round, and pigeons have the ceres on top of their beaks! Both cute! Kinda like Comparing ducks and geese, same family but one is bigger!
@@animalpeople880 btw! I noticed (or maybe I can't see) that Talulah isn't wearing her flypers. My pigeons don't have one, but I'm not sure whether to get them comfortable with me first or just put them on when I let them explore outside their cage. Currently, I just put papers where they usually make a mess.
@@joyouspoke yeah she’s not in a flyper in this one. She actually only wears them a few times a week on average. If she wants to hang out on something hard to clean, if I’m filming in a room with carpet, or if we’re going to town. I don’t mind spot cleaning and just keep a roll of toilet paper and a spray bottle on hand. I recommend developing trust first, otherwise it will be so much scarier to get used to them, and that could set you back. When they trust you already they are much more forgiving.
Thank you so much for making these vids! I’m going to put this comment on all of your vids to help boost your videos, but you’ve helped me SO much!!! It’s hard to find sound info on pigeons, and your channel has literally saved my butt when it comes to research. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
I’ve never made a pillow, but I always make one thing or another when my birds moulted feathers. I’ve got a decent collection of Tallulah’s moulted feathers at this point, though I made a sculpture from them a while back so my collections reduced since then.
@@animalpeople880 Do you get 'down' under feathers as well as big flight feathers in a moult, and how often does moulting happen for these different feather types? Does Tallulah grow a winter coat, and what about my beloved feral pigeons, do they have winter coats?
@@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 they do have down, but not a lot. They moult all there feathers about two times a year, same with the ferals which are the same species as Tallulah, just a different breed. You find all the moulted feathers, but people usually collect the big ones since it’s hard to keep track of the small ones and the down so it usually just gets vacuumed up. They don’t get a winter coat they way some mammals do, there feathers normal are warm enough to do they job.
I feed a bunch of mourning doves and starlings at my window and would love a video on interpreting mourning dove noises and body language, I want them to feel comfortable with me.

@@vivavovo9224 Also turtle and tortoise. We just called it sköldpadda (shield toad).

@@animalpeople880 I thought she was a Fan tailed pigeon? as they look like her
@@michaelhawkins7389 That’s right, her species is columba livia domestica, her breed is an Indian fantail.

Mourning doves are illegal to own

It’s fun explaining this difference to friends who ask about my birds. Helpful in sort of breaking the image of rats with wings idea.
Absolutely!

Talula is gorgeous
💕
Can you collect the feathers in order to make a pillow? With updates on YT on how well the harvest (!) is going?

Hi this was vary fun to learn I love it 😀 💗

So they’re basically the same bird.
Where can I buy a bird just like yours?
ive been watching your videos ... love the hair !
Dove is a pigeon according to science but human language different. Smaller usually. White pigeon is dove.
Lovely talulah 🤩
Love Your vids, just got 2 pigeons
im sorry what kind of dove is this one >>>???? please answer
a year late but tallulah is a domestic pigeon (aka domestic rock dove), her breed is an Indian fantail i believe
Have you tried belly button feeding the pigeon before? I've tried belly button feeding birds and it tickles
I just got a ringneck dove :]
Love the hair!!!
Your tallullah is so cute and ya i dont know but your voice in the videos are lessor slow
You should not call your pet a rock dove" It wouldn't be capable of flying up to a cliff face,, it's a fantail dove my dear, 👍
And looking at the crest on the head and feathers on the feet" it's an Indian fantail,👍
So all doves arent white ...mind blown
Hi 👋 how are you ☺️
