The border collie is also extremely sensitive, and can have their spirit crushed with a hard human. That can also cause behavior issues. They are often misunderstood around other dogs, as they are not interested in them, but more interested in objects (balls, frisbees, sheep, agility, humans). Literally the best canine in the planet!

Absolutely! I was very stern when I first rescued my border collie. Quickly I realized she did not respond and only shut down when I would treat her like other breeds I've experienced. Only when I exrpressed happiness she would light up and do anything I'd ask her to. She completly changed me into a more positive person and I'm convinced she was an angel sent down to make me a better person.

Very true, Robin. Building that special relationship with you BC from puppy stage has been an essential ingredient. Of course, no one should ever strike a dog. Border collies always want to please and can read our human emotions so well. I'm sure they pick up the emotional undertext of our voices. They truly are a gift.

My border collie, Jess, was an amazing dog, with all of the intelligence, energy, playfulness, and loyalty they’re famous for. She was never a barker, and seemed to like everyone, even strangers. One day, when she was about 7, a workman came to the house to do some odd jobs. Jess immediately positioned herself between the man and me, keeping him about 7 feet away from me. She stood stiff, the hair along her back standing straight up, every muscle tense, while a low guttural growl seemed to fill the room. She had never acted like this. Never growled at anyone. Clearly, she sensed something in this man that I didn’t. I believed her. I told the man that I didn’t need the work done any longer, and told him to leave. For a split second it appeared he might argue or move toward me, but Jess’ growl got even more menacing and the man backed out of the house and went away. I never discovered what the problem was, what kind of trouble he might have brought, but since Jess never again behaved like that (and she lived another 10 years) I still believe she knew he had bad intentions and saved us from harm.

I had a border collie I got for free at a feed store as a kid. That dog was so damn smart, hardly anything we 'trained' him to do was really trained, he just learned by himself by us engaging with him. He grew old while I was in college and after a few years of him losing his sight and hearing (he caught on to our hand motions as we talked all his life, so he knew what "come here" in the waving motion meant), we eventually put him down due to cancer complications. One of the saddest days of my life. Such a loyal dog and a perfect breed for families who have at least a few acres to roam. Currently I have a german shepherd, another fantastic breed in the herding group. It's not always about the breed, you got to build that connection with dogs and create that bond.

Incredible mind reader. All I have to do is "think" and she understands every thought. Gets me up at 0630 sharp, uses "little girl squeaks". to go out or come in. Barks only used to warn off intruders. Loved to be loved. Took Dixie to obedience training, and she had "sit, stand': "come", "stay", "obstacle course," "sea/saw", "heal", after the first lesson, She simply watched the older border collies :"do their stuff" and when I took her off the leash, she had already mastered the course. Dixie is a "cow girl" with a weight ( 90 pounds - large for some border collies) to stand her authority over cows and rams. Great companion... always ready to go for a walk, a ride, wrestle, play tug of war.

I handled 2 Borders as Search & Rescue/Cadaver dogs for 22 years. Unlike other breeds that behave as robots, you can watch the Border actually figure out problems. With my first partner, Phantom, I would intentionally use a synonym that I knew he hadn't heard before. He would cock his head thinking then do the action I was speaking about! My second, Scout, alerted on a 1000-year-old human bone secreted inside a file cabinet in an office.
    RIP both.

My dog is a lab/shepherd/border collie mix and she is one of the smartest dogs I have ever been around. She learned her name immediately, potty trained herself, and learns basic commands in about 20 minutes. She picks up on everything and is friendly with pretty much everyone, loves kids, loves kitties (she grew up with 3 cats and thinks she's a kitty), and gets along with most dogs. I have a 11 month female tricolor. The four of us live in an apartment, wife, two kids and me. We are very active. We try to take the dog to whatever we need to do outside. I walk the dog once a day, but it feels more like a run or jog, as the dog doesn't like to walk much. At home, she get herself busy chasing and playing hide and seek with our two cats. She is super social and friendly with everybody, people and pets. Bottom line: you can have a BC in an apartment, as it is not the place, the area, but your lifestyle and surroundings that really matter to the animal. IMHO.

My first, now 12, a lab/husky/border collie, has been off-leash in the yard, and on walks, since he was 7 months. I've had people trying to buy him his whole life. I started at 5k, told one five figures, and he last person to ask was told he couldn't afford him. It was fun, the looks i got.
My 9 month, a border collie/austrailian shepherd/hangin tree/blue heeler, is progressing nicely. He's an easy walk, amazing recall, and showing more of his intelligence, daily.

First dog I remember was a Border Collie, my auntie's dog, and it was the first dog that ever bit me! It was my fault, I decided that I was smarter than she was and was taught a valuable lesson and, it was one that's stuck with me.
Later in life, a mate bred Collies as working dogs and they were characters, all individuals and all smarter than me. A good few ended up as search dogs, SARDA, and performed in incidents like Lockerbie to great praise.
Collies have that look about them, they eye you up trying to decide how they can use you to their advantage but, what a breed. Brilliant dogs, loyal as hell and just so much fun. What more can you ask?
I could do without the bite on my backside though......

He came to trust her and from that point on, they became inseperable.....she asking and tasking him and he completing those challenges every waking hour, amazing her......he was her personal "shadow" until the sad day that God recalled him to patrol his mountains......my wee mum was hurt by his leaving her, but quickly knew she'd be reunited with him when her time came, she was relieved......I am very happy that they met and were so close for many years.....! My son wanted a dog when he was in Grade school and he had just come home with all A's on his report card so we went to the animal shelter and looked at several dogs and none seemed to really take to him and one of the staff said they had a young Border Collie and they brought her out she immediately jumped into his lap and curled curled up and started loving on him. Well son there's your dog she has chosen you. She's 17 years old now and getting feeble now and losing her sight and hearing. Best dog we have ever had. Very protective of her boy and she saved me from being attacked by a stray Pit Bull sneaking up on me while I was weed eating the alley fence. She had opened the gate to check on me and seen what was happening and attacked the pit bull. Pits might be strong but they can't match the speed and agility of the border Collie. She got some extra treats that day!

I got my first border collie when I was 12 and I trained him to go off leash in a field and on our lawn in just 3 weeks at the age of 15 weeks. I work a full time job and I am going to give him 1 hour of field exercise in the morning and 1-2 hours when I come home. I will also be paying a neighbourhood kid to walk my dog around the block and play with him in my backyard for a bit. Do you think my dog will be ok.

We just lost Scooter the Pup and I can attest these animals are Velcro dogs. They bond to one person but also love their pack. Scooter was my mother’s dog but was extremely protective of me. Any time I watched a friends dog Scooter would become unexplainably protective of me. They are extremely loyal and love their family with every last beat of their heart. Unfortunately, Scooter’s life is as cut short due to cancer. He passed at 10 years of age in what seemed to be good health. Again, cancer is an unpredictable monster, and after noticing rapid bloating on Scooter (within 16 hours or so..) we took him to an animal hospital only to learn of Scooters hemorrhaging tumors .. I won’t go into more detail as it is painful to write this but he passed by his mom dad and myself in peace. They are the greatest animal one can have come into their life. The love they give is unparalleled and their intelligence rivals that of many of the individuals I’ve met.. long story short, I’m sorry you never got to meet Scooter the Pup. He was a great boy.

I have a Border Collie who is about 9 now. Best dog I've ever owned, in terms of responsiveness and intelligence. He can 'fetch' a beer from a closed fridge and close doors left open. He is also very loyal and always by my side. He does have a jealous nature and guards my feet from our other dog, which I've tried to correct. He is an anxious spirit and will lock onto whatever I ask him to, such as a 'bug' outside in the dirt (he will focus on the spot and dig if asked) or a toy. He is not the best with my children, who are under 5. They make him very nervous, and nip at them if they run around inside while screaming. We share the same feelings about noise levels and stimulation, I guess. I just don't nip at my kids. (Just to clarify, he always gets put away from the stimulation when this becomes obvious to me, and I try to keep both kids and my pup safe and calm.) Love my Reno.

My dog is a Border Collie mixed with one of the smartest dogs in Australia, the Kelpie, as well as possibly labrador or german shepherd. Not quite sure as she was rescued from a small outback town at around 4 months old. She is now 2.5 years old and the most loyal being I know. I love that her intelligence allows her to be more empathetic and, as the video implies, she knows when someone loves her and will loves them back 1000 times over.

His ears prick up, and he is a blue Merle. Her most recent, Lucy, is a red. She has strange colouring and barks. She is still a puppy (but so is casper)none of my sisters dogs bark. Lucy was recently given to our older sister, because they are alike...... somehow? And I have a border collie Celpie cross. Pepper has border collie markings straight ears, slim fur, and a long nose. You can see her breed right away. I’ve lived with border collies my whole life, they are exceptional dogs and yes, are very loyal.
