During its 124 years under British rule, Yangon, the former capital city of Myanmar, developed a rich heritage of architectural marvels from the colonial era.
After that period, a military dictatorship governed the country for nearly 50 years, cutting ties with the outside world. Despite this isolation, many old colonial-style buildings still survive until this day.
However, the city underwent a major transformation and face challenges to maintain the past when Myanmar reopened to the world.
This episode has been filmed in 2020.

Correction: Yangon was not under British rule for 124 years for Yangon only came under colonial rule in 1852 after the 2nd Anglo-Burmese war, making it 96 years of British rule by the time of independence in 1948.

The old colonial building styles are the best, better than our contemporary style junk! Don't make the same mistakes as everyone in Asia did!

I honestly didn't know those homes are over 100 years old. I used to play on those kind of buildings when I was young coz we have many relatives around 30th streets. It's quite sad to see many of them are replaced with soulless 8 stories buildings during mid 2000s.

It's sad to see the restorations are nowhere near as Hanoi's old quarter or Malaysia's Georgetown, and previous dictators demolished many architectural gems for various petty reasons (saving costs after earthquakes, to wipe off the colonial past etc.)

I came for the deep fried cream cheese. I stayed for the brutal heat, genocide and near absence of democracy.
