Side comment: one thing I liked about this show is that Samantha Carter was treated with respect and at the same time, Amanda Tapping (in my opinion) didn't play her as the type of person who forced people to respect her. She worked to earn people's respect, letting her work do the talking for her.
Exactly. There were no feminist agenda with her character who demanded men this and that, instead we have a character who was "just one of the guys" so to speak and as such we didn't see her as anything special or different but as one of the four main characters (aside Hammond of course).
Honestly, I think the biggest contributor to the lack of "feminist agenda" (Carter having to push the fact that she's just as good as the guys} is the fact that, right off the bat, Jack, Daniel, and Hammond accept her as "one of the guys" as much as they would anyone else. Jack pushed back on working with her at the very beginning, but that's who Jack is: he doesn't trust people on his team immediately, and that's continued all the way to where I am in season 8. Carter comes at him detailing her qualifications as a soldier and a scientist, and then proves herself as much of both as Jack needs, and all of them accept it. Ironically enough, I think the reason there's a lack of "feminist agenda" being pushed is because there isn't any sexism getting in the way of just... Being respected. That and I think the showriters really thought about this before putting it out there, but I'm not well versed enough in the story itself or analysis of writing to confirm that. Edit: got to the "I like women" part and following. I stand corrected about the early season, but I stand by it with the latter part of the series: The lack of sexism is an important part for portraying Carter as a full character, both in-universe and out.
@@masonlacour1982 I agree, the line that sold it was her saying she did 100 hours in combat operations and Jack smiles, ever so slightly. No open statement of affirmation required. Yeah, but if you look at the interviews tapping had to _fight_ the writers on that point. You know at a time where people are asking for more female representation and strong characters, us Stargate fans had that a long time ago with Samantha Carter.
Jack actually asks an amazingly deep question when he asks if the wormholes *always* exist. Sam dismisses it, but what if they really did? There would be no real way to tell, and perhaps the Stargates just pin the ends of existing wormholes rather than creating new ones.
The more I think about this, I think Jack is right. Creating a wormhole has to be a fantasticly energetic event. Like, way more energetic than a supernova. Pinning their ends has to be vastly more energy efficient. There are some hypothetical physics models that hold that the universe is crisscrossed by wormholes created during the big bang. Or even that every subatomic particle is actually the mouth of a wormhole. Selecting those would be an insane task, technologically, but somewhat less pie-in-the-sky as drilling your way through spacetime.
@@3adgamd3r Who's to say such inadvertent contamination didn't, just not to that particular star? It could even be more evidence the wormholes exist independent of the gates, as the Ancients would otherwise have accounted for that in routing the travelers, if they could.
@@chasethevioletsun9996 they DID account for that, if you remember in the episode the only reason the wormhole formed is because Carter bypassed the gates safety protocols using Earths primitive DHD to form the connection
