I've noticed that younger reactors often can't get past the shaky production values of the mid sixties. I remember listening to the early blues and jazz recordings of the 30s or 40s and not being able to get past the sound quality. The difference between listening now, and hearing this song first in 1967 is monumental. We didn't know how good hi-fi was going to get, and were blown away by the energy and dynamism of guitar oriented rock. And I great this song like I heard it back then.

The problem with most people is they think new is always better. Modern tech is amazing and can do things that we couldn't imagine back in 1975, but as far as sound quality, you have been sold a bill of goods. And don't get me started on the level of musicianship and music production.

I was six or seven when I heard this first. Then I heard it A LOT. It got, deservedly, LOTS of radio play.
One of the things a kid really wanted back then was a 9 volt AM/FM transistor pocket radio.
All we had was the radio, or "word of mouth", having a friend play an album for us.
Can you imagine a kid rolling the dial through all the stations, the classical, country, jazz, elevator music, soft rock, and real rock? What would YOU stop the dial at? THIS. If this was playing? For sure. I
I always stopped on the best rock channels on MY 9v transistor radio! I had no idea at 7 years old that fifty-three years later so many of these songs still stand up, and folk are still discovering them. It's so easy now.
Grace, of course, is a legendary figure in rock history. Blessings.

Grace's vocals and Jack Cassidy's bass (and Marty Balin when he's more featured) were always the glue in this band. Especially Cassidy coz he held everything together even into Hot Tuna and further as his career went on. Just a great feel for pushing the envelope, or just playing what's needed like on an acoustic blues. Great sense of what's needed.

Since I saw Disney's adaptation of Alice In Wonderland as a child, I can't say for sure, but ambiguous lyrics coupled with rock music was the staple of the day when Jefferson Airplane did White Rabbit.

Interesting commentary. Back in the day you had to buy the album and hear the whole thing. I think that forced us to hear a variety of songs before deciding if we really liked the band or not. And the production values were pretty weak here, although the musicianship is quite good. Check out "Volunteers of America" next, then you can check further incarnations with different band members and even a name change(s) to "Starship".

Imo it seems that it has gone a full circle, back to 50's early 60's. Artists and groups are doing career song by song, video by video, every few months or so. Albums are more or less on the sidetrack. Especially singers are presented in talent shows of all kind instead of relentless gigging to catch the audience, production teams instead of writing own material.

Over a few plays you find their groove and fall in love with it. Glad you gave them, and others a second listen. White Rabit was a "play song" like Mercedes-Benz by Janice! Some of the old bands liked to have fun with songs and fans. Not sure if you can pull it off today. We're too serious today. The Beatles had fun with some of their music and is one reason they were so popular.

White Rabbit was written as a response to all the parents in the 60s wondering why their kids were doing drugs. The song was using Alice in Wonderland as an example of where kids might just have picked up on the idea that mind-altering substances were a good thing...kids learned from the stories that were read to them as well as the behavior of the adults around them (who were all smoking and drinking...plus there was at least a 50% probability that your or at least one of your friends' mom had a script for diet pills, valium, or any number of mood adjusters doctors regularly handed out in those days). Definitely check out Volunteers (the live version on one of the Woodstock LPs still gets to me).

They moved into a more mainstream direction in the '70's when they changed their name to Jefferson Starship. "Miracles" was played to death in 1975, With Your love, Count On Me and Runaway were lovey-dovey top 40 singles with Marty Balin singing lead.. They were a San Francisco band which was the birthplace and center of psychedelic rock. Their early Airplane stuff did have a "unique" sound and feel to them. Airplane was at the heart of the San Francisco scene. So many great songs. Members of Airplane and CSN - David Crosby, Paul Kantner, and Stephen Stills - co-wrote a song called Wooden Ships, and both bands released their own versions and both are worth a listen. Other great tracks are Volunters of America and Come Up the Years. The band split, forming two bands: Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna. I definitely recommend checking out the bluesier Hot Tuna - "Keep On Truckin'," "Another Man Done Gone," and "Surphase Tension."

In case you don't already know, this band has been through several interations, all having a slightly different sound. White Rabbit and Somebody To Love are from the early days of psychadelic music, when they were called Jefferson Airplane. That was from '65 to '72. Then some of the members (Grace Slick included, who gave them much of their distinctive sound) split off and formed Jefferson Starship in '74. Then in '84, after more personnel drama, the remaining members changed the name to simply Starship. the whole story is more convoluted than that, but that's the nutshell version.

"feed your head".... my next favourite Airplane thing is a song that's not available in a studio version... it's their live performance of a Steppenwolf song called "The Other Side of This Life", performed live at the infamous Altamont concert in 1969 in a clip from the movie "Gimme Shelter"..... be warned if you watch the Altamont performance they never get to finish the song because Hells Angels start beating people up in front of the stage and even knock out the Airplane's other singer, Marty Balin, but up until that point the music is amazing .... it's also on a live album called Bless Its Pointy Little Head, but it sounds better at Altamont

"Crooklyn" is a Spike Lee Joint from 1994. I saw it in the theater. Alfre Woodard plays a mother of five who is dying of cancer. Sad? Yes. But the soundtrack is great. I bought it on cassette. Might have been the last cassette release I ever bought come to think of it. The music of Jefferson Airplane has been used in many movies and tv-shows, mostly this song and "White Rabbit", to evoke the "revolutionary vibe" of the 1960's. "Volunteers" is another of their hits. "Wooden Ships" (also recorded by Crosby, Stills, & Nash), "Embryonic Journey", "Plastic Fantastic Lover", and "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon" are a few other stand out tunes from them.

Airplane's music varied quite a bit. Some was more laid back, like Wooden Ships, We Can Be Together, Today etc., some was harder edged like Volunteers or Plastic Fantastic Lover. Some were in between, like Crown of Creation.
I always liked White Rabbit, it was innovative for its time, it had good clever lyrical imagery referencing the well-known children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It was short, sweet, musically pleasant and pretty, nice bass line and melody and guitar leads, and it let Grace show off her vocal power. What's not to like?

This is the very first album that I remember growing up that my parents would play on their hi-fi. I later took it for my collection and love it still. White Rabbit was the biggest hit off this album and started Airplane on its way. You really need to understand I am guessing what the mid 60's were about. The psychedelic's had surfaced and experimentation was the thing. White Rabbit was essentially a play off of Alice in Wonderland, have you read or seen the movie? That will give you understanding of the song and how ground breaking it was. The Beatles, Velvet underground, Pink Floyd, Vanilla Fudge and so many more had begun the acid rock scene. For me, 3/5 of a mile in ten seconds is my favorite tune on this album. A bit harder rockin' but the whole album is a 60's special one. I suggest trying that song, it will get your attention. You know I love you baby, yes I do!

You're still on the edge!?! Young man you are listening to Grace Slick.. the original Queen of rock acid Queen of San Francisco with the premier band out of San Francisco. Your ears are used to highly produced auto-tuned and highly compressed music that you hear nowadays. Grace had an amazing contralto and on her good night she could blow anyone off the stage. She had her issues with alcohol and that made her performances inconsistent over the decades but when she was on her game she was amazing. She is also one of those rare singers that was as powerful as a lead front woman as well as her vocals supplied for background. She has a voice that when you hear it you don't confuse it with anyone else.

Jefferson airplane became jefferson starship. One needs to watch jefferson starship live as they are many times better live than hearing studio versions

Jerry Garcia was instrumental (no pun intended) in how this song turned out in the end, but due to being on a different label he was not listed with a production credit. if i remember correctly he got a nod for 'spiritual advice' or something like that...

It was such a great time of music back then. Back from when I first saw Elvis, The Beatles, The Animals, and everybody else on the Ed Sullivan show. From that one TV show there was a buffet of music. Tom Jones. Englebert Humperdinck. It was a fabulous time. Thanks for your fun reaction videos!

Grace Slick has one of the top 10 voices in rock history. Sexism (and having survived into old age) keeps her from getting the adulation that Jim Morrison got. This vocal performance is a master class. Perfect pitch throughout!

PS you can skip the later incarnations of the band under different names. They got progressively worse and turned into arena-rock schlock.

easy world, isn´t it?Sexism is the answer to everything! I am not a Morrison-or Doors fan,but the Doors were the bigger group with bigger hits and Morrison killed himselve. That makes legends, not the gender! When the "27 club" already passed away Grace Slick started her career. In that age the creativity dries up,so her career was short. And to stumble drunken over the stage doesn´´t help to stay in that business.

I agree wholeheartedly with your first statement! - but the second comment not so much. The J. Starship era had some great songs that were very successful & many people loved.

@@zimbo65a riiiiight. Rock musicians ae notorious for their sobriety. I was discussing VOICES. And as a singer, I can tell you Grace's is in a league of its own.

if Grace Slick had fatally overdosed when she was 28 she would no doubt be the original Queen of Rock.

At the transition point to Jefferson Starship, try "Have You Seen the Stars Tonight." Or follow Jorma Kaukonen* to another band: "Watch the North Wind Rise" by Hot Tuna (which I play every winter, because yes). (Or venture into his solo work; "Genesis" is gorgeous.)
*YOUR-muh COW-kun-nen. I'm not mean enough to send anyone into his work without a pronunciation guide.
