I did not expect to end up, so many years later, finding out about someone else who first discovered this specific series, but apparently, here we are. I've been living my entire life on the literal other side of the world, probably in one of the few countries where this anime actually got some success, being Italy.
We had a bit of a weird story when it came to anime: during the 70s our channels didn't broadcast anime, but at most other European or American productions. In 1978, they decided to broadcast the first mecha anime we had ever seen, Ufo Robot Grendizer: never before had any other cartoon seen a similar success, as even if it wasn't the first anime in the chronological order of Go Nagai's production, no one cared because it was completely different from everything else that our audience was used to see before. The series was such a massive success, also thanks to the super-catchy opening made specifically for it (which is something we've always done) that in the official game made by Microids they added an Italian dub hoping to sell the game more easily here. Seeing how successful that was, local televisions then decided to import more mecha anime series from Japan, where several other anime, like this one, struggled to have space due to the overwhelming competition; instead, we only had to make a new opening and a dub (which unfortunately meant cutting some scenes sometimes) for any mecha series to be profitable, also thanks to the recurring themes such as the fixed transformation/assembling sequences and the names of the moves being shouted. Due to this, I'm pretty sure this series had more success here than in Japan, together with several other anime that couldn't keep up with the (literal) giants of the genre.
I didn't quite manage to see that in person as I was born far later, when we already had a lot more TV channels specifically dedicated to cartoons, but my parents did, and I grew up while watching those series, that they acquired via DVDs found at stores and newsagents'. In particular, I had the entire collection of this series, which was the series I watched the most among those as a child, and I was really surprised to find out no one else knew about it until I had Internet access (and even then it was tough). Everytime I see other people taling about it on the internet, memories just flood back, as this was probably the anime that most defined my childhood. Even by watching it now and realizing how low-quality some scenes were, it still hits right in the same spot whenever a battle sequence is going on.
If you had a VPN, I would have heavily recommended a fully legal Italian-exclusive streaming website, named VVVVID, where we have several anime series available for free (with ads), including this one, but unfortunately I haven't found an option to change the dub, nor subtitles.
