I keep thinking that our sled, that my parents had, had two rudders that stuck down a quarter inch and ran the length of the sled or something that kept it going straight (well mostly straight😅). Except for the snow flying in your face😆, it was GREAT FUN!!! Your sled looks nice!
I don't like the snow and am quite happy with the rain and the mist we have here in the Eifel near the border to Belgium. But that sled looks nice. I would put some wheels on it and race down the hills. Greetings from Germany
I have fond memories of having toboggans hit snow covered rocks and logs and flying through the air myself or watching cousins go past when I fell off the back! Wait... yeah I still had fun!
Lol I still have those good same memories too. flying down the hill and right at the end realizing the sled is going off track and hits the one tree on the hill. Flying forward and being crushed into the curl at the front.

What a great project! Had an 8 footer as a kid. One slat split, so dad put a 4 foot long sheet of aluminum on the front half. That made it travel at 'warp' speed! Legs and arms in at all times please. (Dad tore ligaments in his knee on one ride, and a buddy broke his arm grabbing a bush to help slow down 😲
Awesome job, never heard of this type of bending process very interesting. My brother-in-law uses ski wax and a iron to melt crazy fast. Only one thing missing and this could just be old guy talk cushions 🤣🤣
My purpose is for hauling logs like a drag in the summer or winter for a small milling operation or a snow blower so mine might be a bit wider for its purpose. And heavier boards but shouild be pretty similar. To your tobbagan.
Thanks for the demonstration of bending wood using hot water and a jig - very useful! I hope that you get more useful snow - perhaps by then you will have a second version ready complete with shorter rope and thinner boards ? A great project - thank you! Do the family make you haul them on the sledge back up the hill too ? Perhaps borrow a huskey or a reindeer for that ?
I've been bending 3/4" ash to make coat hooks. Had no problem bending at a 1 1/2" radius. So, you could probably bend your oak to a much tighter radius and that would get the front end down so your kids could see the trees BEFORE they hit one? Might want to build a bending jig with a piece of 4" PVC or 4" round wood and make it wide enough to allow you to bend all the slats at the same time. I use a turkey cooker and stand the sticks in boiling water for 1/2 hour before bending.
Great job on that Sled James. Now all it needs is a breaking system for those really huge hills! I was also wondering if the front is to high for the kids to see over? I am sure that the next one you build will be fully equipped & ready for some big snowfalls............ 👍👍
I think that 3/8 thickness is more common for the slats with a 12 inch bend. The biggest issue is that you can't really use kiln dried and get an acceptable bend. It needs to be green.
I was wondering if you added another base to where you sit raised up but slightly angled back .so when you sit on it , the frount would want to lift more shifting the centre of gravity???
Grass.... i grew up with RC models, dad wanted to test his gas air boat on the front yard, it got interesting from the wet grass.... lol wet grass equals.... oops
Steaming it in boiling water will allow it to bend much better for many different types of woods. But if the wood is really hard even that won't help that much.
Then why don't you start thinking in froggy metrics then! Call them centifrogs and millifrogs. makes it easier. Mefrogs, millifrogs, centifrogs, get it right. cos my mum is french and who need 4 syllable words in english, that's the thing with english it's fast to speak. can also say centies, millies and meties.

Nice sled. Should be around for ages. I use “spill on polly” like that too.
