Give it time, yo. I used to think the same thing myself, but in the last year I met the woman of my dreams and now we're together. What you've got to remember is that life isn't a race. There's no "right" age to find someone you love or get married, and you're not "behind" at finding a relationship. Sounds sentimental, but it's true.

I mean calling knockout a stereotype is kind of an insult cuz everyone knows that Knockout is the hunkiest transformer of all time, I mean, as he said himself, he’s just “Juicy”
There's a character on Venture Bros called Shore Leave who is openly gay but also probably the third biggest badass on the show, being a superspy with a bevy of combat skills and quite the impressive kill count. Knockout kinda strikes me as that vain of character who has a ton of reasons to love him, and being openly gay is just another box to check.
Relationships is one of the reasons I enjoy IDW comicbooks so much. They portray the world of Transformers with so much more depth than robots fighting a war; they have religion, emotion, biology, concepts of gender & so much more. Thank you for covering this topic.
Souljastation 5 don’t worry, the religion isn’t that big of a factor, though it can be a little interesting at times. Instead of Primus being an actual god, he’s a regular Cybertronian who just has great durability. I’d say that the religion is IDW Transformers starts to turn from just the basic lore we’ve gotten over the years to being more scientifically explained than anything else within the Transformers universe.
The comics are usually better than the animated shows and movies; they tend to stick to the same and common things in a way but the comics do different stuff than what we usually see, this why I prefer the comics.
For all the dolts saying they're just robots and can't feel love... They are sentient beings. Mechanical or not, love can never be removed from the picture. What nature and shape that live takes just depends on the bot. They are synths without the skin.
Actually, they first started out as robots that developed their own thoughts and turned on the quintessons, so they would eventually have some sort of romantic thinking in the future
@@Phanto5692 perhaps so, but they have developed to the point where rat trap essentially described a cybertonian strip club in an episode. Considering it was the 90's, I'm kinda surprised that passed the acid test for airing, but it's fun to think about nonetheless.
@@tartatovsky I think he was implied to be bi. He had a crush on Naoto long before he realized she was a girl. The fact that he still had a crush on her after the reveal could mean he’s open to both genders
I never understood the whole "It doesn't make sense evolutionary speaking" line of logic when in pretty much every Transformers universe, save for that one comic where they somehow evolved from the gears within Cybertron, the Transformers exist due to Intelligent Design not Evolution. If Primus, the Quintessons, or whoever want to make a race of Asexual robots that are able to feel love then who's going to stop them?
When the Quintessons did it, it was completely accidental and unwanted. And it brought about their downfall. Also, I always hated the "evolved from gears/pulleys/levers" bullshit. It would've made more sense for them to evolve from mineral based lifeforms instead of biological if they wanted to go the evolution route.
That one comic retconned its original of the Transformers race, and in fact was the one that introduced Primus. They later referenced that as the illogically atheist Jetfire's belief, until he was forced to confront reality when he saw the Well of All Sparks and eventually Primus himself in Cybertron's core.
Talking about that, why most of them have human like faces?, (btw, both origins stories are canon, it depends from the version of the story, but there are someones who said that Primus create the transformers but the Quintesons dominated them and make them thinked that they were the creators, and the rest is history) if they were created by quintesons, why they had the human like faces?, quintesons barely had human faces, the most are the judges, but they are abstracted human faces, not the greek perfection ones, and if they were created by Primus, why Primus had a human like face?, why would need a human like nose a giant space robot?
@@jlr1357 The Quintessons, in the continuities where they created the Transformers, based their designs on their clients rather than themselves. In the Primus origin comics, Primus was, for lack of a better word, an angel of God. Primus himself was created as an emissary of The One, the intelligence at the core of the Universe responsible for its creation. He made Primus in His image, much as he did with all humanoid species.
@@Cantthinkofanames that is his characterization in IDW comics. He left the deceptions, fashioned himself a screenwriter, adopted a puppy, and worked with the human alliance as he learned about earth culture and continued working on his writing.
As an ace person this was such an amazing video! There is so little representation of the ace community that finding this entire franchise where being ace is kinda the norm and where being ace is depicted like we’re actually able to feel things like romantic love makes me nearly tear up!
Ace person as well, I'm glad that Optimus Prime and the rest of the Transformers cast can join the ranks of fictional Ace reps. We only really have Perry the Platypus, SpongeBob, Peridot from Steven Universe, Alistor from Having Hotel, Jughead from Archie Comics, and Todd from Bojack Horseman to call our own. And even then only the last two are explicitly addressed in-universe. Now that I'm thinking about it , Transformers really is the most prominent series in depicting asexual romance huh...
Does it really count as ace if you don't have any form of equipment to you know do the dirty job because it really doesn't sound like more like what that one lizard that reproduces via pretty much cloning soo does it even count as ace or is it just you know robot don't have penis and vaginas vs having those and really not feeling the want or even need to use them
@@alfreddiogu92 not want sex or romance pretty much.... And as I Stated I'm not sure it's actually asexual like at all they just don't have the equipment for the funny style dance
Oh they very much do it's just that instead of gender and such it's their alternate mode I bet that if a plane dated a car they would be murdered Because cybertron was a very bad society Before the war
Truth be told, I'd like to see someone actually tackle Optimus and Elita's relationship and not just relegate it to the background or make it not exist.
AMEN! I'd actually like to see transformer's relationships in general. Just because they don't reproduce sexually doesn't mean we don't enjoy seeing their relationships....
Storytelling wise, I think it makes more sense for their relationship to be presented more abstractly: Optimus himself is almost always portrayed as sort of a "larger-than-life" character, so showcasing the ups and downs and (in entertainment) tragedy a relationship usually entails would cut into that. I think it would be most appropriate to show them both stoically supporting each other with fairly obvious affection from their respective positions of authority.
MTMTE takes the cake for me. Chromedome and Rewind's love for each other was tragic yet beautiful to read as the Crusadercons continued on their journey. I loved seeing Cyclonus develop and open up to Tailgate. His heartfelt confession to Tailgate, "I love you", damn near broke my heart because he thought he was saying goodbye. I also loved seeing Whirl open up around Cyclonus and Tailgate, and loving them as true friends. Honestly, I like the idea of love in Transformers, it makes them more human, more like actual people, and it gives a story in its own sometimes.
I'm a man that is married to a woman. When I first started reading comics where transformers were in relationships I knew there would be a number of pissed off fans. Personally, I really liked it. They're robots. They have no genitals. If two that you thought were male robots decide they love each other why should that bother you? They're robots. They don't breed and even if they did..... so what? Even if they did somehow have genders... so what?!? I like these relationships.
I think the argument that "it doesn't make sense," is ridiculous. They're transformers, they literally started as a toy commercial and none of it makes sense.
@@arnulfoacevedo8147 I know. That's cool, but we can't sit here and pretend like the concept isn't kind of ridiculous in the first place. BA & Silverbolt were my first major experience with Tf romance, despite having watched the original cartoon long before. But then again, the words of romance between people didn't mean much to me then, but I can appreciate those details looking back...
Out of all the couple's reviewed here the one that surprised me the most was DRIFT AND RATCHET!!! I mean.... A gruff and grizzled medic and a solitary lone wolf samurai? I wouldn't have guessed.
Not really. The writers just didn't communicate with each other much. Ariel wasn't originally supposed to be Elita-1 until someone noticed they were both pink and suggested it, but that didn't happen often.
In my head cannon, Starscream and Skyfire were in a relationship before the war. When Skyfire was lost over earth, the trauma set Starscream on the path to become the Decepticon we all know. That was why Skyfire tried to work with Decepticons until he finally accepted that Starscream had changed.
As a "social asexual" human and a huge Tansformer fan who especially admires Transformers relationships for this reason, I sincerely appreciate your comments and this video! Happy Valentines Day! :)
@@MechWomanWarrior15 Yeah some of my friends and most of my family don't understand it. So I use Transformers as an example sometimes. It works especially if you have nerdy friends lol
@@artistofcybertron Exactly. It's a shame that robots and aliens (and alien robots!) seem to be the best representation we currently get, but at least Transformers does it pretty well!
I love the relationship between Chromedome and Rewind and Tailgate and Cyclonus. The IDW MTMTE comic being so embracing of same sex relationships actually helped me feel more comfortable with being openly gay irl. I don't feel like I could thank James Roberts enough for what he wrote in MTMTE and Lost Light, it's awesome.
Rewind and Domey legit made me cry a few times in my reading of IDW's first continuity. Which I have you to thank for, for making it breeze to step into IDW's world and James Roberts' amazing writing making him one of if not my fav comic book writer. [Ian Flynn on Archie's Megaman before him]. Frankly all the work James did with the Lost Light crew was very believable and at times very heart breaking. Silverbolt and Blackarachnia where the first Transformers I knew where a couple I was a little too young/dense to notice with Tigertron and Airazor. Frankly I never got why people thought love or romance needs to be tied to procreation. I've always been a very love is love and if it happens it happens kind of guy.
Yep. Just like the video said, if Transformers can learn the values of justice or hate, they can definitely develop a desire for companionship or love.
Rewind and Domey broke my heart... when Rewind edits that video before his fight with Overlord... I was legit crushed. I miss MTMTE/LL. What an incredible run that was.
You brought up a very interesting point that if these alien robots can wage war for millions of years, then having some fall in love isn't out of the question. As for my favorite Transformers couple, I'm going with BW Silverbolt and 'the dark poison of his heart' Blackarachnia. I'd also like to see more takes on Optimus and Elita-One's relationship in future shows, like what G1 and "Animated" were doing. Oh, and Happy Valentines Day Chris!
Honestly IDW did a great job at show casing these relationships. Cyclonus/tailgate and chromedome/rewind were some of the best out of the recent series.
Not true like cause it just was an excuse to have more gay transformers although female transformers are just the same on the planet so straight rleations should be the norm ext but there were too many of these love triangles etc although it was done well skybound handles romances gender better than idw IMO and doesn’t need to explain gender to the audience while idw arguably wasted and absurd amount of time on it it felt like fan fiction more official comics at times and ratchet has been entangled in so many love triangles through transformers it is not funny anymore
Transformers has never been solidly science fiction. WIth its origins in children's entertainment, it has only ever been anthropomorphized fantasy. It's funny how many young men in the fandom seem to recoil at the notion of robots feeling love while never taking umbrage with the fact that these robots conversely feel rage - to a degree that they'd go to war. If I were to take a science fiction perspective on the universe, it makes far more sense that these beings would focus on singular connections with each other, as monogamous pairings make for evolutionary advantage. I know a lot of the fandom have invested in the fiction as a means to making sense of the world around them. That said, I don't understand why people can't afford room for people who aren't *exactly* like them to be represented as well. It's a big universe. Why not help everyone to feel like they belong in it?
Michael Bird it just doesnt feel logical to me, im all for romance in a lot of shows but it just doesnt feel like they quite hit the mark with transformers and monogamous relationships. The only way i could see it making some logical sense would be polyamorous relationships with nothing even slightly sexual like kissing. From an evolutionary standpoint monogamy wouldnt be needed for cybertronians
Lazulii How is it not logical? Transformers can learn abstract values such as justice and hate. It’s not a stretch at all that they would find a desire in companionship. Mind you, a desire for companionship/love isn’t strictly sexual-based. There is a benefit in companionship, just as much with the benefits of being part of a community.
Michael Bird I don't have a problem with that transformers could love, but only with idea of female transformers - it doesn't make any sense. And I'm interested only in versions, which is better done, like IDW, but BEFORE they put in more females than Arcee (she was OK, because she is effect of an experiment) (and I don't like that they change this to be less serious than before, but it's off topic)
Even as a kid, I’ve never really cared if the character was human or not. If they’re the focus of your story, then why shouldn’t they be characterized as having the same emotionally spectrum as we do?
This is a great take across a franchise which has had a lot of takes on the topic. Both interesting in the abstract, and really good at generally talking about "why" these emotions are part of the stories... as ever, really great. Thanks!

People complaining about Transformer romance in things like the comic now likely never saw a problem in G1, or Beast Wars. I saw a lot more incensed arguing about romance AFTER Rewind and Chromedome were revealed to be a couple. I'm glad IDW got to have same-gender couples. I was so excited when I first realised when I read mtmte.
Simon Furman: Transformers don't have gender and can't fall in love. Also Simon Furman: They all use male pronouns, have emotions, and also Sludge falls in love with a human WOMAN!
I don't think Furman ever said anything about them not falling in love though? Wasn't that a different writer for IDW who thought that? Also, in Steven Universe, The Gems look female and use female pronouns but Rebecca Sugar insists they're a genderless race too, but apparently that's fine. (Not that Furman isn't still an idiot, because female transformers had already been established in the cartoon before he decided they didn't have gender and all looked male).
@@Troublethecat In Steven Universe, Sugar actually explained that the gem's gender presentation is based on her own experience as a nonbinary woman (i.e. she's ok with being addressed by feminine pronouns, but feels uncomfortable being actively treated as a cis woman), it was important to Sugar that the gems experience of being coded feminine, but not boxed in by the concept of binary gender, reflect how she would perceive herself.
@@sunnydong9069 That doesn't really dismiss my point, which is that people keep pointing to transformers using male pronouns in our language as the reason why transformers can't be a genderless race, when everyone is fine with genderless/one-gender races of non-humans that are coded as female. It seems kind of unfair to me.
@@Troublethecat Ah I see, that's a fair point. Still, I think there's some merit in examining our mental bias in assigning gender. Like, why when one decided to design a race of genderless aliens, one's mind defaulted to giving them one particular binary gender signifiers. Some examples might have well thought out reasons to make this choice, while some might be more cavalier about it.
I always found myself able to relate to Knockout form the Prime Series on a more personal level. I only wish that I too could look that good in steel belted radiance. Besides, having a doctor as a significant other is bound to have it's perks.😅
I knida wonder who introduced KO to steel-belted Radials in the first place. It's not like he can just walk into a store and buy a set. XD Agreed, though I prefer Copper to Crimson... 😏
Optimus (in the generation 1 cartoon) clearly knows how romance works unlike Goku in the early Dragon Ball series. That’s the best reply I could come up with after reading your comment.
That was a well handled Basics on a subject that some corners of the fandom seems to find reprehensible. That said, I’m glad I’m in the comments early so I can escape the vitriol that unfortunately feels inevitable...
Anyone who can be mad at robots in love has no soul and needs to take the stick out of their ass and trade it in for some imagination. I love seeing my sentient robots happy! SO SWEET!
I was extremely happy when MTMTE and the latter-day IDW books started exploring gender and romance between Transformers. And I was very charmed at seeing Cyclonus and Tailgate become such a cute couple.
Not gonna lie, Chromedome and Rewind, though rather odd to me at first, definately was a tearjerker when I read MTMTE. When Chromedome had to eject Rewind into space, I knew it wasn't gonna end well. Thank goodness for parallel universes, am I right?
Hot rod also was implied to be openly gay, i could see him locking manipulators with ultra magnus now. I mean they have a certain tension that is definitive of a love/hate gay relationship lol
Chromedome did not have a healthy way of dealing with relationships, especially when they ended. First he'd drain part of his core Energon to leave at their memorial marker, then when he felt so grief-sticken he couldn't bear it anymore, he'd just have the whole relationship wiped from his memory banks. He did this so many times that the last time he tried to leave an Energon vial, he found out he had none to give anymore. He needed some serious primo counseling.
It’s actually implied a few times here and there that transformers do have sex for pleasure. And in the bay films it’s implied that they do sexually reproduce, though it’s never explained how or why. But I do agree that it’s silly to argue that they shouldn’t feel love if they can’t have sex. Asexual people do exist in the real world and can have deep romantic connections, so I don’t see why it would be so far fetched in science fiction.
Cyclonus and tailgate is my favourite because they both are damaged as people and do hurt eachother but ultimately will do anything for eachother my favourite line from cyclonus is when him and whirl are discussing why they aren't together properly despite them all going to die he nonchalantly says tailgate will survive "because i'll split the world open and tear down the sky before i allow him to come to the slightest of harm"
When G1 Transformers was reaired and localized here in my country the translators gave G1 Starscream a gay accent. And during the episode where he, a few other Decepticons, a few Autobots and Spike went back in time to King Arthur's time. Once they got back to the present they made Starscream speak lovingly to Megatron, "Did you miss me honey?". Localized and given that line intentionally as opposed to using the direct translation of, "We're back finally".
As a gay man I was DREADING reading the comments But you guys surprised me..l but then again this is a class channel so it makes sense the viewers are the same Thanks Formers ❤️
According to the background lore, Lugnut and Strika were consorts. I was rather perplexed that Lugnut would have any time outside of praising The Great And Glorious Megatron.
Gotta say, Chromey with Rewind and Cyclonus with Tailgate are my favorite pairings in transformers ever, mostly because they're so well written! The hardships they go through, the tragedies and the joy in just being near eachother is unlike any other transformers couple I've seen so far in transformers.
Thank you. Transformers is not a hard sci-fi show, so people should stop with the “they don’t sexually reproduce” argument. And FYI they might mate in some continuities. Wheelie had parents.
I love IDW Rewind and Cromedome's relationship with how Rewind is concerned about Chromedome's injecting himself over the centuries because of the grief he feels from the deaths of his previous loves. When Rewind died, and was later brought back from a duplicate Lost Light where things had gone differently, it was such a sweet moment when Chromedome sat down next to Rewind and wrapped an arm around him without even saying a word. I love IDW's Transformers story arcs as a whole, I hope I get the chance to read the new story arc with any luck. Being an asexual trans woman myself and having to accept that I'm more likely to be murdered than loved due to society's hatred of trans women and diversity in general then it does tend to hurt at having to accept that I'm likely to spend the reminder of my life alone, still I've got Transformers to enjoy so that's something. Also IDW Arcee as well as Anode being trans themselves has been great, it's nice to have some positive representation for a change instead of the usual bigotry 'humour' from the insecure and the hateful.
Cyclonus and Tailgate are my personal favorite couple. I legit almost had a heart attack when it seemed like Cyclonus was going to die protecting Tailgate in the hallway scene after Getaway set Tailgate up. I can't remember the exactly line but it was something to the effect of, "Goodbye little one". I was screaming!
Me too! I loved seeing Cyclonus go from an unfeeling loner to someone willing to risk his life for the one he loved, it was written so well! Although, Cyclonus's "I love you" to Tailgate when he thought he was saying goodbye at "cyberutopia" was heart-breaking.
Because of their relationship, its basically become impossible to view Cyclonus as a villain. He is forever the brooding ancient warrior with Tailgate, his life mate, forever at his side.❤❤
Chromedome and Rewind might be the best example of a transformers relationship. Their story is so engaging and fun. Im not ashamed to admit i was very upset during the overlord incident on the lost light.
2:25 I'm sorry but as sweet as this scene is, it makes me snicker for how hilariously bizarre the romantic couple of a lady and a boat riding into the sunset is out of context.
Me: Starscream Prime is just gorgeous!😍 Friend: You know Cybertronians are asexual right? Me: Improvise, adapt, overcome. Friend: And the size difference isn't exactly negligible. Me: Improvise, adapt, overcome. Friend: And... Me: IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME.
I hope that these relationships continue in new shows and comics. As you said, if they can hate each other to fight a six million year war, they can fall in love 😁
When I bring up my ships/pairings to my father (who grew up with the original show) he always said that Transformers can’t love each other and be in a relationship. (Or ‘make love’, cause that somehow got into the conversation one time-) I should show him this video.
I think that's why I like the IDW comics so much. All of those interpersonal relationships helped add a level of depth to these characters. While not specifically romance related I always felt Megatron and Soundwave had a father/son sort of relationship in the IDW comics.
The gayness of the idw comics is so cute, I love it! And while knock out might be a slight stereotype, I mean at least he doesn’t talk like a stereotype, his love interest breakdown is the total opposite of a gay stereotype. Transformers says gay rights

I mean calling knockout a stereotype is kind of an insult cuz everyone knows that Knockout is the hunkiest transformer of all time, I mean, as he said himself, he’s just “Juicy”
well his personality is very flamboyant which is where the stereotype comes from
Knockout is a very stereotypical guy, but it's not really a bad stereotype
There's a character on Venture Bros called Shore Leave who is openly gay but also probably the third biggest badass on the show, being a superspy with a bevy of combat skills and quite the impressive kill count. Knockout kinda strikes me as that vain of character who has a ton of reasons to love him, and being openly gay is just another box to check.
My husband grudgingly is fine with my crushes on Knock Out and Vegeta from the Dragon Ball franchise.
Relationships is one of the reasons I enjoy IDW comicbooks so much. They portray the world of Transformers with so much more depth than robots fighting a war; they have religion, emotion, biology, concepts of gender & so much more. Thank you for covering this topic.

Religion? F**k, now I know which TF comics not read.

They happen to be one of my favorite fictional couples. Happy Valentines Day!

MTMTE takes the cake for me. Chromedome and Rewind's love for each other was tragic yet beautiful to read as the Crusadercons continued on their journey. They don't breed and even if they did..... so what? Even if they did somehow have genders... so what?!? I like these relationships.

Hello me from 1 year ago!
I can’t express how much I love the relationship between chromedome and rewind. It’s so wonderfully written and adorable!
I don't know, I can't say I approve of a headmaster and a cassette being together. These mixed marriages never work out.
That I don't understand myself bird. But, we can appreciate the concept in fiction like this. Nice comment by the way
Lazulii How is it not logical? Transformers can learn abstract values such as justice and hate. It’s not a stretch at all that they would find a desire in companionship. Mind you, a desire for companionship/love isn’t strictly sexual-based. There is a benefit in companionship, just as much with the benefits of being part of a community.
Michael Bird I don't have a problem with that transformers could love, but only with idea of female transformers - it doesn't make any sense. And I'm interested only in versions, which is better done, like IDW, but BEFORE they put in more females than Arcee (she was OK, because she is effect of an experiment)
(and I don't like that they change this to be less serious than before, but it's off topic)
Thanks!

It was Sludge who fell in love with a human not Slag.

Ken Gibson Yeah I don't know, I think by the end of Lost Light they were hinting more towards Magnus and Megatron, but you never know.

@@Raziel312 Well, with his partner's name being "Cyc-lonus" (Boob-lonus) I think they are even.
Not gonna lie I was a little disappointed that you didn’t do “The voice” through the whole video, still loved it though
Thank you. Transformers is not a hard sci-fi show, so people should stop with the “they don’t sexually reproduce” argument. And FYI they might mate in some continuities. Wheelie had parents.
Hot Rod marry arcee!
Here's Hot Rod i'm curious as to who his parents are and how he came into existence (and which continuity's wheelie was it again?)
Starscream-she’s not so hot
Megatron- she’s hot enough to replace you when ever I like too
REPLACE ME!!? NEVER!!!!!
implying Megatron and Starscream were in a toxic gay relationship
Love is the right of all sentient beings.
I have 3 different Chromedomes and two Cyclonuses, and I always have a Rewind and Tailgate next to them on the shelf. Stellar videos, mate. Cheers!
5:20 I would love to see what would happen if Sideburn ever met TFP Knockout 😂
We already have a legacy knock out. We just need a legacy sideburn. Come on Hasbro.

2:25 I'm sorry but as sweet as this scene is, it makes me snicker for how hilariously bizarre the romantic couple of a lady and a boat riding into the sunset is out of context.
She's riding him-
Me: Starscream Prime is just gorgeous!😍
Friend: You know Cybertronians are asexual right?
Me: Improvise, adapt, overcome.
Friend: And the size difference isn't exactly negligible.
Me: Improvise, adapt, overcome.
Friend: And...
Me: IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME.
Friend:But Starscream is with knocko....
Me:I M P R O V I S E, A D A P T, O V E R C O M E

@Heinrich Himmler I was thinking of more of a 'hot Skitty-on-Wailord action' situation.
Does anyone else feel like crying whenever seeing Seaspray and Alana together
What I like the most about G1 is how unintendedly (?) metaphorical and deep in can end up being sometimes
Human/flshy relationships with Cybertronian are !y favorite couple.
Awhhh 🥺
Interspecies love always fascinated me and fun fact it also happens in animal life! I once heard that a giraffe fell in love with a wildebeest!
Let's be honest here, any being that can bang, will at some point try to bang
Glad you included Kiss Players without your skin crawling.
I liked the IDW concepts of Conjunx Endura (lover, companion), Conjunx Endurae (spouses) and Amica Endura (best friend)
I'm so happy that Amica Endura exists as a platonic alternative to the romantic bond :))
How can we forget the og love story. How megatronus loved solus prime and because in his anger he killed her lover he went into exile.
The gayness of the idw comics is so cute, I love it! And while knock out might be a slight stereotype, I mean at least he doesn’t talk like a stereotype, his love interest breakdown is the total opposite of a gay stereotype. Transformers says gay rights
