Good video Gary. I hope a lot of people watch this episode and start growing indoors. What Gary explained can get you started. If it's too cold to grow outside you can start growing right away with things like lettuce, spinach, kale, basil, oregano and other herbs. And then you could start plants from seeds like tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower and then transplant those Outdoors when the weather warms up. So if you're reading this and you're not growing indoors but you want to what Gary told you will work ,just get started. Happy gardening.
I already grow indoors. I do a couple of the LED Miraclegro systems, Kratky method hydroponics, and my seedlings both hydroponically started and traditionally. I think this video could have helped more if it went into Watts a little, cost of running bulbs like this, and how many hours of sunlight compared to under bulbs is needed. I have a little bit of electrical background and was wondering about the cost for running my T5 growlights and figured they were about $8.50 each for 17 hours a day. It would be even more for the the T8s, so a couple of grow lights like this add up really quickly. I have a limited budget and don't want to spend more on grow light electricity than I am getting out of it in food. I personally am debating about converting some old ballasts to single input LED replacement bulbs, but they are all around 13 Watts and judging from my MG systems I know higher Watts works better. I know the LED will cost a fraction of the T5/8 bulbs in energy, plus they last far longer than the florescent bulbs. I would like to learn more in a future video about the different ends of the spectrum and how they are used in indoor growing.
Maybe I am a little bit more advanced than some other people, so maybe I am looking for too much. I do think a discussion of cost to run these bulbs and how long to keep plants under them would have been very helpful, especially this video was discussing how to assemble this cheaply.
I love growing indoors for many reasons! Lol. Great video! I use the sunblaze t5 florescent bulbs, they are high output and gives off little heat with maximum growth. Mine are 6500k and 5000 lumens I believe. They are absolutely great, I've had my ballast for about 4 years now. I got mine online eBay or let go, but be careful what you buy. I just scored 2 t5 6' for about $50 each recently because someone had too many..lol I buy my replacements from 1000 bulbs and they are great!! Now I have two 2 foot t5's and two 6 foot t5's. Lol.
@@StaceyHerewegrowagain But what are the watts of the bulbs and the ballasts? I have 25 and 45 watt LED bulbs and the 45 is much better than the 25 even though they are the same brand. Lumens are definitely important though too. I just was realizing recently that I need to probably replace my T5 bulbs this year, they don't really last that long if they are running 12-17 hours per day 7 days a week.
This was so so helpful to me. For the last two weeks I’ve been researching grow lights. I almost bought those purple grow lights for a few hundred dollars. This was perfect, informative, and on time. Thank you so much.
I love t5's I have two 2 foot ones and two 6 foot ones.. and a led full spectrum. Lol I grow so many plants and hopefully going to be able to donate most of what I grow soon, so figured why not, lol. I get my replacement bulbs from 1000 bulbs and they are really cheap but good quality. They have long hours of light. I love my sunblaze t5's but any brand should be good. I've only ever used sunblaze
I really appreciated you creating the start to finish playlists on growing from seed! Thank you for taking the time to share your triumphs and the not so triumphant. Trial and error is the best way to learn.
By far the most comprehensive video on grow lights and I've watched so many. Showing the bulbs in the store and comparing the ratings make an enormous difference in understanding the light system, especially showing us yellow vs. white light. I now feel confident buying my bulbs and to get growing without my seedlings becoming leggy. Thank you!

Gary, You have some of the most useful, well explained, and practical information. I really enjoy watching your videos. Some of them I watch every gardening season. You think I would remember the information, but no I have to watch them over again to refresh my memory. Great videos !
THANK YOU! I was about to spend money on two of those cheap-ass chinese-made red-blue grow lights from Amazon because I just didn't know better. You have saved me a lot of money (and possibly nerves) AND you enriched my knowledge base. Thank you.

Excellent job sir, on showing what to get, where, and how! I’ve seen package deals of this stuff; and this is 1/3 of the price by doing it myself! Plus, I get it instantly by going to the store, and ensure nothing brakes compared to online shipping! I debated grow lights - now I’m sold on the value. 🙂

Gary thank you! This is the most helpful video on plant/seed starting lights on a budget that I have found, It is still current even at 3 years old. I used your guide lines for local off the shelf hunting. I found Hyperikon 4 foot led conversion bulbs for around $10 a bulb on Amazon. 6,000K--2300 Lm. This saved me a lot of money allowing me to convert my old T12 fixtures to LED bulbs that should last for 45,000 hours. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for the video! I absolutely can't wait to make this and start my seeds this upcoming February. I had planned to buy those tiny overpriced grow-light kits they have by the seed starting kits, but I really didn't like them, as it didn't fit the size I needed. I wanted to do at least two long flats of seedlings at once. But I am so glad to know this is a much bigger and cheaper for the size you get!
Glad to make it. You will really enjoy starting indoors. It is designed exactly for those flats. Ill be doing more and showing you how to manage the flats in future videos.

Hi Gary. I set up my grow light system today doing literally everything you recommended. It wasn’t as inexpensive as I thought it would be but was still 1/4 of the price of buying a similar thing at Gardeners Supply. Here is what I got: - IKEA has metal shelving units which you had said was good because it was easy to hang the shop lights from - 4 shop lights from Home Depot (double fixtures) with the bulbs included. I can’t remember the kelvins and lumens but they were in the range you recommended All in, the system cost 263. I bought 2 shelving units with 3 shelves each and 4 double-bulb shop light fluorescent fixtures. Maybe it is more expensive here because I live in Fairfield County, CT but still a bargain compared to gardeners supply.
Yep 1/4 is good. Thats not bad as shelves can be a lot. Times your seed start by $2 and you will see you make it up fast. Have fun! And now I am boiling water to kill the knats from my seed mix before I pot tomorrow. I bought a new house last year that came with a greenhouse and was never into gardening but how can I not start gardening when I Li eternally have a greenhouse affixed to my house? I only grow in there - not outside. Last year was the first year I tried (all from transplants) and I made every mistake in the book. This year I am going to rock it. If you know of any resources for greenhouse gardening would love to hear them. Thanks for all your great advice.
Thanks for the informative video. I'd like to add something to your comments about the cheaper fixtures if I may. The ballasts supplied in the bargain fixtures won't get you the High Output You can check this by looking up the tube and it will have a ballast recommended to fire it. Thanks again!
Thanks for this video! I was having issues with getting my seedlings enough light while not having them burn up in the Florida summer sun. My seedlings are much better now, I bought a metal rack and t8 lights, 2,900 lumens, 6,500 k. Thanks again!
I made my own last year, using left over LED headlight bulbs, some aluminum pieces and a transformer I ordered online, plus a couple headlight plugs I bought at the car parts place to wire it all together. Four bulbs at 8,000 Lumens and 6,500K each, over a 2x4 footprint. It's pretty bright in there. The commercial lights are just toooo expensive for people like you and myself, who can build what we need a lot cheaper. Thanks for the vid.
@@srimayilauramerwin3004 On Amazon. My car kept burning out the low beam on the driver's side, so I had a bunch laying around. Finally found a brand that lasts like they should. As they burned out, I swapped the originals.

Great video! 👏👏👍👍 QUESTION: does temperature and humidity matter too when trying to grow seed starts? My basement where I want to grow my veggies for this coming year’s gardens currently sits at 35% humidity and 55 degrees. If it does, what should the ranges be? I’m hoping it won’t matter for the cool weather crops but was curious to know too for the warm weather crops. Also, I noticed mold growing on the outside of my peat pots last year that I was using to grow flowers in. Should I be concerned and if so how do you prevent this and or treat it once it appears. I look forward to receiving your replies to the above. Maybe your next video could address these two questions for your other new gardeners like me. 😊
Funny me neither. Lol I water, feed and trim every plant individually. I'm hoping, once I can start to invest and have the right materials and tools to grow a lot in a little space on a budget, my goal is to donate most of what I grow to people and shelters in need, as well as having a bit of a homestead of my own. Irrigation would sure make it easier. Lol

You just made a lot of people get mad at their self for buying all those different color cheap made and high price lights off the internet and store’s they don’t need 😂, and also I just use a cheap heat lamp to germinate my seeds, works really good and have changed the bulb to a grow bulb once sprouted, it’s all just common sense man

Your videos are always informative and so helpful. It is because of you and your videos that I now have the confidence to grow with ease. My container garden this summer was a HUGE SUCCESS and my neighbors were very impressed with the amount of produce I was able to harvest. LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS 2019 SEASON. Gary, Thank You for sharing your knowledge and time with us ♡
Those t8 from Walmart is what I have they go bad real quick I have had 3 go bad and didn't use them very much, But my old t12 that are 10 years old are still working good.
A great way to save money is to look on Craigslist under the free heading. Every week I find free fluorescent lamp fixtures sized T12 and T8 as commercial and residential properties are switching over to T5 and LED's. Usually you can get the tubes free too and you can always upgrade to the whiter light if you want. From an efficiency point of view, you only are going to use these lamps for a few weeks a year and even old lamps are only a little less efficient than the newer lights.
Gary!! You need my lights!!🙂 Full spectrum with 3 different kelvins mixed. Veg to fruit to flower. Lumens are for humans. Plants want micromoles. 😁 Great video.😊
I agree for fruit and flowering. You certainly need more specialized lights. And if you want to carry them indoors. I may move to full indoor growth depending on what type of home I get. Ill keep you in mind!
good video the only thing i would add is in the Veg state a Kelvin rating of 5,000-7,000 is best however for flowering 3,500-4,500 is preferred. yet it honestly can vary widely depending on strain or type of plant. either way good video and good information. you do not have to spend hundreds of dollars for a good/decent artificial light for your plants.
Thats is true. I try and let people know this is for just transplants. Thanks. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com

Awesome video! This is the first video I found that actually gave me the detailed information I was looking for. I understand the specs for the lumens and kelvins are for transplants. How about if I want to grow lettuce and herbs indoors over the winter? What would I need?
Thanks. I used these lights to grow peas for leaves and spinach. And I am growing dwarf tomatoes under them. The videos are from Jan I think, if you want to look at them Yes you can grow greens under them.

The link for the LED light goes to the T8 light above it in the list. I was curious of your recommendation for a LED solution. Love your videos. Keep up the good work
So I put general products out there as the come and go. So try and find things with just similar numbers at a fair price. I found T-8 and LEDs work pretty much the same. LEDs you can get higher lumens which is a bonus as they can be raised higher. Just make sure both tell you the Lumens and Kelvin so you can compare. Check out my new Amazon Influencer Shop. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden
Thank you Gary. I love your videos and information and I refer to them often. I have a question: I tried LED lights similar to yours with 5000 lumens, and 5000 Kelvin ended up with straggly seedlings. I had them fairly close. Do you have any thoughts about this? Thank you!
Nah if you were in a couple of inches not sure why. If it was cold weather crops like lettuce they actually get straggly from it being so warm. They like the cold Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Thank you, this is very helpful for advanced n novices. Great job explaining. Your new quest might be using LEDs since their electricity consumption is lower, plus the uses of chunky receptacles n weight is out of date for this purposes. Aside from building your own LED designs and keeping the same ratings the cost is still lower yet more involved.

Great video, very informative. My question is how would you scale this for plants that you will be taking from veg to flow with the lights being a fixed height? I'm willing to dig through the theory myself but I don't know where to start looking

The LED technology is moving fast. Amazon now sells a 4 pack of Sunco 40 watt, 5000K color temperature, 4500 lumen LED shop lights for $89.95 or a 6 pack for $134.99. There are no bulbs, just two sets of two rows of LEDs in each lamp. That's only $22.50 per lamp and no assembly required. The lamps have 8 daisy-chained together which is really convenient. My vegetable seedlings did extremely well with three of these lamps on each shelf of a wire rack. Buy shop lights with the proper specifications as described in the video, not grow lamps. The LED lamps use significantly less electricity than the fluorescents and no mercury to worry about.

The best i can do in Alberta is 4000Lumens 4000Kelvins. Is that in the ball park? There is a light at Blains farm supply 10,000Lumens 4000 Kelvins. That sounds like my dream light.
How many fixtures would one recommend on a 2 foot wide shelf? My plant stand is 2 ft. By 4 ft. With 4 shelves. Would 3, 2 light ballasts be enough or would recommend 4 ? Thank you. Love your instructional programs! Thank you mark
Here in Oz the LED lights come in nice slimline package without separate bulbs. Very lightweight, easy to mount. Built-in diffuser. I have a question----at one point in the video you said a 4100K and 2600 Lumen light could work as you have used them in the past. Would an LED light with 4000K and 4000Lumen work as a grow light? I know throughout your video you stressed the 5-6000K and 2-3000 lumens. I wa just wondering if that would work or not.
Hi, Gary! Thanks so much for this! I started my seeds inside this year with your advice on lights. I almost fell over when I saw the prices for “grow lights”! I’m hoping to be able to get better harvests because here in SC spring doesn’t last very long and everything bolts so quickly. Love your videos💗
Yeah it is crazy for the same lumens and kelvin and you can actually make better ones yoursefl. Good luck. Check out my new Amazon Influencer Shop. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden
Hi Gary, thank you for the very informative video! I already have T5 set up. What is the difference- T5/T8. Would like to go to LED, would they work in the hoods I already have? Wish I would have known all this before I bought the expensive units!!!💜
So the difference is often power consumption. The lower T's are more efficient. I was just commenting to someone the replacement LED bulbs are hit and miss as the have to match the ballast of your T-5 fixture. That gets really confusing. I think for T-5s the replacement is easier and less of a worry. I would read the replacement bulbs and see what the say, and just buy 2. Give them a trial run.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN hi Gary really impressed you answered so many comments. I have a question maybe someone can answer. I thought you may have told us the ideal dimensions of your shelving compared to your grow lamps. Seems like you have two ballasts with a total of four lights but I didn't get the dimensions of the shelving. Any advice would be helpful from you or one of your beloved subscribers. Michael
Gary I have enjoyed watching your videos. You share a lot of information that is very much appreciated. Thanks for all the great videos. I found a LED kit that has 5000K and the Lumens is 10,000. Is the 10,000 too high of a lumen? Can I use that to start my seedings?
So that is very high but okay. You would have to raise them well above the 3 inches I recommend for germination. Ive only used up to 5000 lumens. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. 1 second ago I am noticing that the T-8 and T-12 bulbs are different diameters. It strikes me that the larger diameter bulbs (is that the T-8?) would be better in terms of covering more area, EVen when you have two bulbs side by side. Is this true? I just discovered your videos and am so excited. Thank you!
Gary... what do folks do if they don't have room for the 4 ft length? I'm hunting and can find LED but they don't list K on those fixtures so I'm not sure how to figure out what the equivalent would be.
You did show a receptacle with four tube lights in your past videos. It had some kind of cage on the bottom. Did they stop making that product? Sorry, but I couldn’t find your old video.
Hmmm. That wasnt me. I havent used a 4 tube to grow under. I use 2 two tubes side by side. Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for your seeds, seed starting supplies, package seed deals, oils and my new LOGO'd journals and harvest bags. THANKS! I have coffee mugs too but shipping is SO MUCH for them. Working on that.
Thanks, Gary. What are your comments on T5 vs T8 bulbs? Do they differ by some inherent capability that I'd need to consider or are they just simply differently sized bulbs?
No real difference. The lower you go the less electricity used is major difference. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This video was great. I just watched another of your videos that did not show the detail of the build as much. both combined have been very informative. I have a related question. Do you have a direct Q&A email for questions? I am growing Carolina Reapers and other sinister heat level peppers. I understand now that once they get to the point where they have 8 leaves on them I can transplant them from the little 72 pot trays into a 4 inch pot. My question is, how high do I want the lights from the plants at that point?
It depends on your light intensity. But once established somewhere between 6-8 inches usually works. Thats what my recent videos from 2020 discuss. I have a whole growlight series I just did. I've been told by experienced gardeners to use both a warm and a cool light fluorescent bulb in each fixture. Does your recommended Lumen/Kelvin make that unnecessary?
I never did in 15 years. Always went for as close as i could get to 6500K. If you are growing for flowering and fruiting, you might need both but not for transplants. Good luck.
I hope they listen to you!
This is perfect if you just want to do seed starts for transplant. All my videos and transplants over 5 years have followed these principles.
That is the best way to learn. Good luck in 2019.
Thank you!
I have updated videos too from this year. Anyway these basic lights are great for transplants

Thanks for info went and bought set up with $25
Hi Gary. I set up my grow light system today doing literally everything you recommended. It wasn’t as inexpensive as I thought it would be but was still 1/4 of the price of buying a similar thing at Gardeners Supply. Here is what I got:
- IKEA has metal shelving units which you had said was good because it was easy to hang the shop lights from
- 4 shop lights from Home Depot (double fixtures) with the bulbs included. I can’t remember the kelvins and lumens but they were in the range you recommended
All in, the system cost 263.

The ballasts supplied in the bargain fixtures won't get you the High Output You can check this by looking up the tube
and it will have a ballast recommended to fire it. Thanks again!
Thanks for this video!
I was having issues with getting my seedlings enough light while not having them burn up in the Florida summer sun.
My seedlings are much better now, I bought a metal rack and t8 lights, 2,900 lumens, 6,500 k.
Thanks again!
Florida sun is tough
I made my own last year, using left over LED headlight bulbs, some aluminum pieces and a transformer I ordered online, plus a couple headlight plugs I bought at the car parts place to wire it all together. Four bulbs at 8,000 Lumens and 6,500K each, over a 2x4 footprint. It's pretty bright in there. The commercial lights are just toooo expensive for people like you and myself, who can build what we need a lot cheaper. Thanks for the vid.
Where did you find these bulbs?
@@srimayilauramerwin3004 On Amazon. My car kept burning out the low beam on the driver's side, so I had a bunch laying around. Finally found a brand that lasts like they should. As they burned out, I swapped the originals.

Thank you so much for doing this video. You answered all my questions and more. Great job.
Very glad to help. Ill have more on it. But this is the first part. Thanks for the suggestion.
Mold on peat pots is standard. Not much to worry about.

Great information! Would love to see a video on a cheap diy irrigation system.
You know I haven't used it. Maybe next year.
Lol

Thanks for taking the time to watch them
More great information Gary. Thanks. Have a great day. Best wishes Bob.
Thanks!
You just made a lot of people get mad at their self for buying all those different color cheap made and high price lights off the internet and store’s they don’t need 😂, and also I just use a cheap heat lamp to germinate my seeds, works really good and have changed the bulb to a grow bulb once sprouted, it’s all just common sense man
Good idea on the heat lamp. The more expensive lights work really well but they are just not in everyones budget

Great video! Very helpful for a noob like me, Thanks!
Great Video GARY just returned from wal-mart with a 4ft led light that has 5000 lumens but not any k-value . Using for KRATKY style growing leafy greens.
IF it is 5000 Lumens white lights, it is probably just fine and 6500K. Good luck.
Thank you 🙏 GOD BLESS EVERYONE

Once you start, youll love it.
Gary, Thank You for sharing your knowledge and time with us ♡
Very glad to help. Cheers to confidence!
Those t8 from Walmart is what I have they go bad real quick I have had 3 go bad and didn't use them very much, But my old t12 that are 10 years old are still working good.
Thanks. Good information. My T-12s have been going for a decade.
Excellent info too.
Grow game on point!! Great vid!
Appreciated
Wow Gary, this was great. Thank you!
Glad to help.
Gary!! You need my lights!!🙂 Full spectrum with 3 different kelvins mixed. Veg to fruit to flower.
Lumens are for humans.
Plants want micromoles.
😁
Great video.😊
I agree for fruit and flowering. You certainly need more specialized lights. And if you want to carry them indoors. I may move to full indoor growth depending on what type of home I get. Ill keep you in mind!
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks Gary!!
Thank you, Gary. Very very helpful. I got this.😎
Glad to help.
good video the only thing i would add is in the Veg state a Kelvin rating of 5,000-7,000 is best however for flowering 3,500-4,500 is preferred. yet it honestly can vary widely depending on strain or type of plant. either way good video and good information. you do not have to spend hundreds of dollars for a good/decent artificial light for your plants.
Thats is true. I try and let people know this is for just transplants. Thanks.

Great info thanks.😀👍

The link for the LED light goes to the T8 light above it in the list. I was curious of your recommendation for a LED solution. Love your videos. Keep up the good work
So I put general products out there as the come and go. So try and find things with just similar numbers at a fair price. I found T-8 and LEDs work pretty much the same. LEDs you can get higher lumens which is a bonus as they can be raised higher. Just make sure both tell you the Lumens and Kelvin so you can compare.

They like the cold

Thanks

I like this DIY powered by solar panels.

All great points. And getting cheaper.

The best i can do in Alberta is 4000Lumens 4000Kelvins. Is that in the ball park?
There is a light at Blains farm supply 10,000Lumens 4000 Kelvins. That sounds like my dream light.
so I have use 4100k and 2800 lumens in the past. Youll just need to keep germination close to the light.
I want to get rid of my lovely lawn in backyard, creating additional flower beds and walking paths with native grasses and ground covers. Is this a suitable topic for discussion?
I did a bunch with grasses years and years ago. I hope to do more on flower beds for the gardens.
Great idea!
Very helpful video, thanks! I have a question, thought: how many trays in what size can you fit under these shop lights?
2-4 depending on how you want to turn them. The 4, slide out a bit beyond the lights.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you! Very sweet of you to answer my question! Waiting for more VD's!💜

I am noticing that the T-8 and T-12 bulbs are different diameters. It strikes me that the larger diameter bulbs (is that the T-8?) would be better in terms of covering more area, EVen when you have two bulbs side by side. Is this true? I just discovered your videos and am so excited. Thank you!
The bigger is the t-12 as you go down in number the diameters shrink. But I have been know to say stuff backwards. LOL.
Gary... what do folks do if they don't have room for the 4 ft length? I'm hunting and can find LED but they don't list K on those fixtures so I'm not sure how to figure out what the equivalent would be.
Thank you for the video.
Glad to make it.

Thanks, Gary. What are your comments on T5 vs T8 bulbs? Do they differ by some inherent capability that I'd need to consider or are they just simply differently sized bulbs?
No real difference. The lower you go the less electricity used is major difference.

Good luck.
