Delta 3200 is crazy stuff. I have seen some very usual images pushed to 12000 ISO and that is not a typo. :) I have heard people have successfully pushed it as far a 25000 but have not seen any results personally to really judge if it is worth it.
I had a Rollei FX 2.8. Sold it in the end and bought a Mamiya C330, which I much prefer. The Mamiya is bigger and heavier, but the fact that you don't need to mess around with close-focus filters is a real bonus. It also feels much more solid and I love the images it produces.
I just got my Rollei 3.5e back from Oceanside Camera Repairs (Harry F.) and we were able to work it out so I got it back within a month. Great work! I never knew my Rollei could be this smooth! Good luck and have fun.
I'm not sure if my instagram comment about this swap came across as an "angry" one, but if so I really apologize. I only meant to express surprise, and I have the utmost respect for people like you who create and share free content as a gift to the community. You do you, and I hope the Rollei gives you a lot of joy. Hands down my favorite style of medium format camera.
dont worry, man. We all have our bills to pay... it's totaly understandable. I'm looking forward to see the scans from this your new beast :) (and sorry for my very poor english. Even though I can understand every word you say, when it comes to speak or write... oh boy)
Matt, I'm psyched to see you play with this camera some more in the future. My great grandmother has allowed me to borrow her 2.8d Planar for a year and I've had so much fun with it so far. It's such a drastically different experience from my Nikon F3 and its always cool to see people react to it. I used to do more street photography than I do now, but I noticed people seemed less apprehensive when having their picture taken with the Rollei. Anyways, I'm glad you like it so far! I'm looking forward to more on your F!
Outstanding, your video is like a chat with a friend that also loves photography! And lI ook forward for color work from this gem of a camera and your perfectionist eye!
So true about loading the film for the first time on a rolleiflex. I did it twice on two different days. It sucks but l learned my lesson and I am still loving my rolleiflex.
I can highly recommend Harry Fleanor......! I know the turn around time is a issue, but you will not be disappointed. Harry has repaired 2 of my Rolleiflex's😊.....second to none.
matt, what happened here....i agree that there's very little videos with 'good and tangible' information on these cameras.... but you spoke the whole video about your experience shooting a wedding and nothing really about the camera, parts, use etc... maybe some other time ?
Matt, I have the 2.8F & 3.5F (both whitefaces) and they may be my all-time favorite cameras to shoot. Not just the tactile aspect, but how people respond. Branching out with them this year & really going to shoot more with them. I have a wedding shoot next weekend, and the 2.8 will be getting a couple rolls put through it. Glad you were able to get one of these nectar nuggets!
I have a rolliecord va and it's my favourite film camera at the moment and the close up filters are amazing for portraits it's 60 years old and it blows my socks off 👍👍👍👍 great video matt
I absolutely love Rollieflex TLRs, I learnt photography on my father's. He always took wedding receptions with his Rollieflex and the main wedding shots with a Kalart 5x4 cut film press camera. Well it was the 1950s. I have always been a Rollie fan buying a Rollie SL35 in 1972 and using a Rollie 35s through the 80s. Have fun with it, wish it was mine ;-)
The ilford Delta 3200 would be a really welcome video Matt! Just last week I shot a roll of it in my Mamiya 7, it was not great and i I also shot it in my Maxxum 7 and it was even worse (it had no detail in the shadows). So I assume i did something wrong I hope you will be able to shed some light on it. Congratulations on your channel I was really pleased you are back!
Thank you for the nugget on Delta 3200. It's hard to find a clear answer on the box speed of it. I screwed up last Xmas shooting two rolls of it in my K1000 at 3200 but didn't say anything to the lab about it and my film came back way underexposed and unusable. Rookie mistake but you live and learn.
Doesn't make much sense unless you forgot to set your ASA to 3200 or your meter is inaccurate (or the lab screwed up). While Matt is correct that the 'natural' ISO of Delta 3200 is 1000, it will expose and develop just fine at 3200 or 6400, or 12500... or 400. There are plenty of examples on flickr FYI and here's the dev chart as provided by Iford. www.ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/2015416153431192.pdf BTW, Tri-X is actually ISO 320 and that never seemed to bother anyone.
Never had the money to get into the Rolleiflex line but so far I am impressed with my Rolleicord iii. I got mine second hand. I came with what I can only describe as a square leather sleeve. You are supposed to fit it over the viewfinder to block out stray light to help with focusing. Funny thing is is you see scaled down versions of the same thing for LCDs on DSLRs now. :)
Congrats on your new Rollei. Other TLRs are nice cameras but there really is nothing else like a Rolleiflex. If you haven't already done so you might want to look for a Rolleifix; it's a small device that attaches to the bottom of the camera to allow a sturdier mount when using a tripod. Also, Rolleinar closeup filters make absolutely gorgeous images.
The Rolleiflex 2.8F was the last medium format I had before taking a break to focus on just 35mm for a year. The camera was great, but the quirks and the TLR handling weren't really for me. Just now in the process of getting a Pentax 67. I would also appreciate a video on the Delta 3200 thing. I've heard about how the true sensitivity was lower, but was never clear to me.
I desperately have a rolleiflex bug right now… it'd be my first medium format camera, but TLRs and Rollieis always seemed fascinating to me, so I figure go big or go home.
hey Matt great video. just wondering, what do you like the most about shoot film cameras compared to digital? also, I for one would love to learn more about Delta 3200, I got a Nikon S2 and few other pure mechanical cameras and I really enjoin the process, but 3200 is a difficult film to get good images (for me).
Matt, a suggestion in terms of content for the channel. What if you would talk about 1-3 specific photographs taken by other photographers that you like. Showing us what inspires you and in turn what photographers you like.
Hey Matt....that long hair you have!! I have never seen you in your videos with that much hair :). Anyway, nice video! I have scanned the youtube for videos about the 2.8F but couldn't find much, so very cool that you shared your impressions on this camera. I have started to touch the medium format and I love it, so who knows, maybe I will try to shoot a TLR in the near future. Keep up the good work, dude!
Matt Day is in the Rollei Fray! whats up man? sometimes I bust out in Rhymes for no reason lol. thanks for this vid it actually informed me of some things before I got my own Rolleiflex and Rolleicord. hard to go back to my plastic digital cameras after operating these.
How do you shoot a wedding on film, and how many rolls do you go through? My brother hired a professional photographer for his wedding a couple weeks ago, and during the groomsmen shots, one of my other brothers kept making fun of me for being an amateur film shooter.
I shot some 3200 last December(dark rainy afternoon in street lit city) in my Rolleiflex, I was going as low 1/25 at F8,never had a light meter and never used 3200 before. Well I thought I would get a blank roll but instead I got some fantastic shots.
Congratulations on obtaining the Rollei; I'm sure you will truly enjoy it. I have a question about your scanner. I have the Epson V/30 and I'm thinking of getting the V/600. If you have any experience with the V/30, how do you think it would compare with the V/600? Would it be a big improvement? And, did you have any trouble getting it to work on the Mac? Thanks for any insight you may render.
Oh, I've been waiting on this video. Knew you'd like it. Rollei cameras are something else, Matt. The engineering in them is just fantastic. I just got a 3.5F Whiteface - Planar f=75mm with the Ever-ready Case, original strap and lens hood - this friday and ran a roll of Ektar 100 through it. Originally I was looking for a 2.8F as well, but where I live (Sao Paulo, Brazil) they're hard to come by and very expensive. So when I found this one it got my attention, since it was in good/really good condition. Two questions: where did you get a strap with the scissor/alligator clips for it and is its light meter working, being a selenium one? Travis Mortz from ForresthillFilmLab has a video on his 2.8 and 3.5 Rolleis. Great guy, really knows his stuff.
Hey Mat! I have an 2.8f and i really enjoy using it. I don't have problems with the screen at all but mine is the special "white face" version so it may have a different screen. There is a traditional old Rollei service here in Germany to and I think it could be much faster and as good as the american service. So maybe you could sent it there. (I think it is much more expensive).
I would love to hear about the Ilford Delta 3200 film (not being a true 3200 ISO film). I have started using Ilford films since they have a wide variety and good stocks, and all the info that I can get about their films is always appreciated. Thanks dude!
I am used to seeing you in a hat, is that a new haircut or just what usually is hiding under the CCS hat? I think I saw a Roli 2.8 at Tempe Camera here in Phoenix. If you think it is worth your time, maybe they will allow a rent/lease/buy-return thing for a someone keeping the love of film alive. I would also be curious about how their repair shop handles old cameras. I learned the hard way that there is a difference between "shot at" and "push to" with high iso film. I would love to see a video where you dig into this.
Scott Dendy Will do! When you develop it, make sure you develop it AT 3200. If you're sending it to a lab, make sure you let them know it needs pushed to 3200.
Bro, I'm diggin' the 70s fight club/porn star look. Bawh-chick-a-bawh-bawh. Seriously, another great video. I have the 3.5F and enjoy shooting it, but I actually enjoy the Yashica-Mat 124G, Mamiya C220f, and Rolleicord more than the 3.5F. You mentioned Rick Oleson's screens in a previous video. I also had a nasty, hazy screen, and replaced it with one of Rick's for $80. Much cheaper than Maxwell, and the screen is super bright. Can focus indoors now, which was before impossible because it was so dim. Keep on truckin', man. Sorry, had to throw in another 70s reference. :-)
I'm 16 and really into film photography, so don't really have the money to spend on experimenting with different films in case the money is wasted on results I don't like, or if I mess it up because I don't know enough about the film, so more videos just going through your experiences with the films that you've tried out would be really helpful, thanks! :)
ok, I'm envious! I have wanted a Rolleiflex for a long time. I have a German made Rollei 35 right now and appreciate the quality of the build. not to mention to Zeiss optics are superb.
Nice. :) That's a camera I'm interested in in future, too. I just received an as-new Rollei 35se, which I'm very happy about..Just fyi, being German, "Rollei" is pronounced like "Rol-eye".
Hey Matt, call Bill Maxwell directly and he'll recommend a number of qualified Rollei technicians all over the country. I just used Bill Mortez at Pro Camera in Charlottesville, VA, to install a Maxwell screen in my 2.8E last month. One week turn around all the way from California with comparable pricing. I'm able to focus my Rollei much easier now. Very satisfied with the results.
Rolleiflex lenses are hard to beat, even with modern lenses. It has a distinctive look that comes from the German glass and it's look -which isn't too ultra-sharp - which can destroy mood. Like for the Yashicamat, lens hoods are really useful, even for the taking lens. The Yashicamat, moreover, should be flocked inside to stop the internal reflections from the shiny surface or, if you're really careful, paint it flat black.
I was watching an older video with your wife talking about what a gorgeous head of hair you have, and goddamn she's right. As a 30something with a rapidly thinning head of hair, totes jealous.
njc2o Hahahahaha, she has begged me to let my hair grow out for years, so I'm finally doing it. If it weren't for her, my head would be buzzed every day of the year!
Dear Matt, Another great video:) Would love a video about shooting Cinestill 800T, especially rating the film @3200 iso. Rocking that barnet:) Regards,
Matt, you're quite right in that Delta 3200 is actually a 1000 speed film, however you're misrepresenting it in the way you described that. Shooting it at 3200 isn't tricky at all.. what is tricky is shooting ANY film in low light, it's *not* the film stock. BTW, if you do another discussion about Delta 3200, please, please, warn everyone about using it in any auto modes. If the camera doesn't detect 3200 DX coding correctly, they will generally revert to 100 and you'll have a very bad experience!
Nelson Muntz Thanks for the heads up, Nelson! I'll be sure to mention the DX coding issue. Never heard about that one! And you're definitely right, I didn't mean to come across that 3200 was tricky, what I meant was if you're shooting a 3200 speed film, you're likely in a situation where your shutter speed is slow and you're in a situation that's pretty low light. It's certainly not the film stock. I actually just tweeted about this a couple of weeks ago. I stated that no amount of pushing will fix the light. Bad light is bad light. Pushing your film doesn't make the film more sensitive to light. Maybe I should make a video on this!
Sounds good Matt! I'm sure everyone would love to see a video on these kinds of aspects of film use :) Yep, cameras of varying ages will only detect certain speed films, which could be as 'fast' as 400 as a maximum. Worth checking before trying anything funky in older gear.
Maximilian Kilworth 2.8 if you are a shooter, whiteface if you are a collector, now consider the 3.5f regular as well, lighter, same good glass and only a half a stop of light less
Don't! Touch the screen! The ground glass might be dimmer, but they used it for a reason. It's much better to focus precisely with especially with the lens flipped up. Fresnel lenses *where* invented when these where made.
Helge Frisenette Oh I know not to touch the ground glass! But when the Maxwell screen gets installed, it'll be calibrated to that screen so focus won't be an issue.
I have gone back and forth, the maxwell is much better in very low light but is kinda strange as it doesn't "snap" like the normal ground glass in good light. For me, the best is just to make sure the viewing lens is clear, mirror in good shape and use the original ground glass after its been cleaned works best. I take my screen out and wash it with soap and water every few years. A new mirror with old screen>Maxwell with bad mirror.
Matt Day The harm would be that you are not using the great lens to its fullest. You won't be able to focus as precisely. The problem gets even more pronounced when you use the Proxar lenses. You could get a thin fresnel sheet, cut it to size and use it on top of the ground glass screen when and if you need the extra brightness. That should give an effect quite close to having a fixed change.
Hey Matt, how about doing a video about the 2.8f, it's functions/operations in full. You know, so that there will be a video on YT that finally explains it. Then you can go BACK IN TIME a couple of years when you got the camera, and BE SO HAPPY you found a vid on YT that does a comprehensive review. Excuse the sarcasm, but it seems you added another vid on the 2.8f that tells us nothing. So now that you know it well, please do a FULL REVIEW. The Rollie 2.8f community World Wide will Thumbs Up, Like & Subscribe, & you will be so Loved!!!
You can also talk to: Krikor Maralian of Krimar Photo Shop at (201) 796-0554 · 105B Broadway Elmwood Park, NJ 07407 ... "Proprietor Krikor Maralian actually has two more years of experience than Harry Fleenor, not that it makes much of a difference. "
I love the camera as well as my mamiya c 33 and the meopta i shoot with... your title says "first impressions" but I think you really missed the point... totally boring except I am surprised how somebody can talk that much without a break...
I thought you are cured on GAS after your final purchase of a Leica, looks you are still suffering from it with yet another purchase of a Rolleiflex. I think the viewers need an explanation from you why.
I'm not sure advancing through the whole roll is tragic. You can still respool that roll and shoot it. Wasting a roll by dumping it from the camera is tragic. Wasting a roll of pictures you already shot is double tragic.
Definitely interested in Delta 3200 video! Would also love to hear more about the Rolleiflex.
Thanks for all the great videos.
A Blanco Thanks for the support!
Delta 3200 is crazy stuff. I have seen some very usual images pushed to 12000 ISO and that is not a typo. :) I have heard people have successfully pushed it as far a 25000 but have not seen any results personally to really judge if it is worth it.

I only meant to express surprise, and I have the utmost respect for people like you who create and share free content as a gift to the community. That mane is majestic!
Matt you're back !
Glad your channel is not dead.
And the hair, man let it grow :)
so great to see you're back, Matt. Love the podcast, by the way.
Michel Oliveira Thank you! Sorry about the lack of uploads lately. I don't remember the last day I had off. Haha.
dont worry, man. We all have our bills to pay... it's totaly understandable. I'm looking forward to see the scans from this your new beast :) (and sorry for my very poor english. Even though I can understand every word you say, when it comes to speak or write... oh boy)
Your hair has never been so gorgeous.
Marcos Vázquez Hahaha, oh my God.
Marcos Vázquez I was going to comment something along the same lines. Seriously, Matt. 👌🏻
I agree!
Dude is pulling off the Young Stalin
agreed!! haha
I would love to learn more about Delta 3200! Also, a video about pushing different B&W films for indoor/high ISO use would be neat too.

Rolleiflexes are my favourite cameras! Hope you get lots of enjoyment and wonderful photographs from yours!
Jennifer M Thank you! I totally see why people hype them up so much.
Harry is the man, did my 2.8 and it was perfect on its return. Definitely worth the wait.
Outstanding, your video is like a chat with a friend that also loves photography! And lI ook forward for color work from this gem of a camera and your perfectionist eye!
Rolleiflex is the most delightful camera. Quiet and discreet too.
MATT ALL FUCKING DAY. WE LIVE FOR THIS SHIT.

I've got a 3.5 Tessar model and it's amazing. They are also the coolest cameras ever made.
Yes please! I wanted to pack a few Deltas for an upcoming trip. Some tips would be helpful! Plus, Matt, the hair is FAB!

Ah! No Cap! :)
Awesome review! I do love the F. Used one a few years ago and like you always wanted one, too.
Chris Frosin Feel naked without a hat on but it was getting a little warm in the office. Maybe because of the fur on the head. Haha.
What I'd like to know is, how do you change the ASA on the 2.8f. Thanks.
Matt Day is in the Rollei Fray! whats up man? sometimes I bust out in Rhymes for no reason lol. thanks for this vid it actually informed me of some things before I got my own Rolleiflex and Rolleicord. hard to go back to my plastic digital cameras after operating these.

would've loved if you showed close ups of the camera and maybe demonstrate it's functionality .. maybe a follow up "real world review" video ..
Matt do you still own the Hasselblad? Let us know how it stacks up against the Rollei.
I am used to seeing you in a hat, is that a new haircut or just what usually is hiding under the CCS hat?

I have the Hassy 500cm with the 80 and the Rollei looks so much smaller in your hand.
I have a rollecord III with a replaced brighter ground glass, a wonderful camera that is fun to use!
Please do a video on the delta 3200 film.
Interesting, as always. Which Facebook group are you referring to for sale/buy? (Get many when I google)
Matt, would you mind sharing what strap you were using for this Rolleiflex?

Great video as ever. Please can you do more on films, especially delta 3200. Just shot my first roll of that and assumed it was 3200. Many thanks.
Great video! And thumbs up for a Delta 3200 video :)
I'm 16 and really into film photography, so don't really have the money to spend on experimenting with different films in case the money is wasted on results I don't like, or if I mess it up because I don't know enough about the film, so more videos just going through your experiences with the films that you've tried out would be really helpful, thanks! :)
I thought this was a camera you were looking forward to. Specially after the CLA. Now I saw you sold this for a digital M. Good Luck with the M.
happy cameras
Rollei, nuff said. 😍
deepstopdiving Very nice so far!
ok, I'm envious! I have wanted a Rolleiflex for a long time. I have a German made Rollei 35 right now and appreciate the quality of the build. not to mention to Zeiss optics are superb.
Matt, dude, your hair! When I saw the thumbnail, i wasn't sure it was you... cheers!
sold now, isn't it?
Where are the sample shots?
Please do make the video on Delta 3200
Nice. :) That's a camera I'm interested in in future, too. I just received an as-new Rollei 35se, which I'm very happy about..Just fyi, being German, "Rollei" is pronounced like "Rol-eye".
They can't pronounce 'Nikon' probably. You have no chance with Rollei.;-)
Richard Shedd Whoa, that is awesome! Thanks for the heads up!
Get the pistol grip. With the prism it makes it super easy to use, also looks insane which is cool.
Michael Ouzounian Haha, for sure! That would be awesome.
Great video! Would love to hear about the delta 3200 thing.)
Dear Matt,
Another great video:)
Would love a video about shooting Cinestill 800T, especially rating the film @3200 iso.
Rocking that barnet:)
Regards,
Love your videos, I'll be very pleased if you review a Bronica SQ if you have
What is the name of the group you found this on?
Scott Beaton Film Photo Gear
sounds like someone wasn't paying attention when we laid out the rules of film photo fight club
Zenger His name was Robert Paulson.
i would kill for a 6x6 CMOS sensor based rolleiflex
Good choice the 2.8 F is a shiny diamond
Please talk about Delta 3200. :)
I'm sure everyone would love to see a video on these kinds of aspects of film use :)
Yep, cameras of varying ages will only detect certain speed films, which could be as 'fast' as 400 as a maximum. Worth checking before trying anything funky in older gear.
Should I buy a 2.8 F or a 3.5 F Whiteface?
Maximilian Kilworth 2.8 if you are a shooter, whiteface if you are a collector, now consider the 3.5f regular as well, lighter, same good glass and only a half a stop of light less
The only caveat with MF is the time it takes you to reload a new film, especially on location/event.
just bought a Roleiflex K7A on such a facebook group, yay :D
Wtf Please do a quick video about the 3200 film, and show some of the wedding photos.
Matt Day No. I meant don't change it.
Helge Frisenette There are dozens of photographers I know that have done it without issue though. What harm would it be?
THAT HAIRCUT.
What's up wth the bear gryliss look?
jpracingph Doesn't that guy have short hair with a clean shaven face? Haha.
***** You forgot no shutter skills ;)
Alex Polacco There’s already a full review on my channel...
Matt Day - OK thanks Matt.
There's a place in Newport Beach. I can look for their contact info...
Werewolf hair ;)
I love the camera as well as my mamiya c 33 and the meopta i shoot with... your title says "first impressions" but I think you really missed the point... totally boring except I am surprised how somebody can talk that much without a break...
It's $2000 in the Netherlands.......
I thought you are cured on GAS after your final purchase of a Leica, looks you are still suffering from it with yet another purchase of a Rolleiflex. I think the viewers need an explanation from you why.
Wow, you have hair now :)
Hey Cruz Castillo, Eden Capwell would love you if you shave the beard.
HOLY SHIT a Santa Barbara reference. I'm impressed.
I'm not sure advancing through the whole roll is tragic. You can still respool that roll and shoot it.
Wasting a roll by dumping it from the camera is tragic.
Wasting a roll of pictures you already shot is double tragic.
What the hell happened to your hair. :)
useless video, talking about a camera without showing pictures taken with it is useless.
