During the second inaugural concert series, Diane dedicates the new 5 manual, 205 rank Möller organ at Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1990.
Some people don't like Diane Bish, but I do. I think her performance here was marvelous. Two points for you, Diane. I very much like her comments before she started this piece. How true it is too! You can hear the battle raging in this music and the all-conquering triumph at the end. Very well done. Thanks for posting.
I'm so thankful for her comments before playing, connecting the music to the meaning for the listeners. Thank you for all your uploads - the videos are a blessing!
When Diane leaves the bench I want to get on and really start playing as fast as her and really enjoying making all kinds of great sounds. I would use all the keyboards and let my feet run fast over all those keyboards and keep adjusting the volume pedals. It’s an organ I would really enjoy playing just like Diane enjoys it.
This piece is from the great organist and composer Henri Mulet (Paris, 1878 - Draguignan, 1967) and titled: "Esquisses Byzantines n°10 / Tu es petra et portae inferi praevalebunt adversus te" composed between 1914-1919 for the great organ Mutin/Cavaillé-Coll of Montmartre Sacré Coeur basilica, Paris
To: Frechiecocorico1 Thank you for this informative tid-bit of information. I did not know that. I visited the famous Sacré Coeur basilica in Paris in 1971. Sadly, no one was playing the instrument at the time of my visit, so I didn't get to hear that epic Cavaillé-Coll. What a shame. Thank you for your post. Best wishes to you.
@ramasco1858 Tuberrific08 had already uploaded the video and in better quality than mine, so I took mine down. There's no reason to have two of the same video on youtube.
Diane Bish; the American equivalent of Dame Gillian Weir. Diane's detractors probably don't like her brilliant gowns and jewelery. Dame Gillian changes her gowns frequently as well. When you're as good as they, you can wear what you like. The standing ovation was most appropriate!
CG
If I'm in the mood for a NASCAR race, I'll attend one! The inner melodies are mangled at this speed! Miss Bish must have been late for a flight or something! Hit up Gerard Brooks at the Caville-Coll at St Ouen's to see how to perfectly perform this masterpiece.
I'm not familiar with this piece nor a fan of any particular organist. I heard this for the first time here and it lived up to the description that Diane spoke of in the introduction. At the end, my tears were starting to fall so the dynamic and message of it must have hit home with me. Perhaps I'll get to hear another organist's interpretation later on but, to me, this was nothing to be harsh on, she really conquered to make this come alive. I suppose the venue has something to do with the ultimate choice of speed also.
You were a quarter beat off on the f# in measure 32. Not that anyone noticed. This is not a commentary on good and evil but the conference of authority to Peter as head of Christ's Church on earth. Disagree all you want. On judgement day, you are in for a HUGE surprise.
woowwww... someone pays attention to detail... could you do a video and kinda show us the mistake? I applaud her for learning a very trick piece and playing it with a virtuoso skill. BRAVO Diane!!
Simply one of the finest organists of our time. Flawless technique and a generous spirit. Thank Diane for sharing your heart with all of us.
She is the MASTER ORGANIST!!!!!
She's is the Queen Of Organists! Bach is the King Of Organists!
Nobody like the First Lady of the Organ!!!!
Thank you for sharing!
Diane Bish is the best...

Fantastic!

She played the HELL out of that organ! Just amazing!

Fantastic!!!
The grand dame of the organ!
Wow!
This episode was available for purchase at one time....
SpecTACular!!
Brawo super ;)
Oh boy, she takes that fast! Wow!
Sehr gute Technik!Ausgezeichnete Registrierung!petersen
She never played a recital at the Crystal Cathedral. She played a wedding once that was on TBN
She did it JUST the way VIRGIL would have LOVED her to have done it.

I believe she did many years ago.
The Virgil Fox version is pretty much the same speed
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
As usual....full speed ahead!
If you search Google for "Virgil Fox Thou Art The Rock" you'll find a UA-cam of Mr. Fox playing this significantly faster at the Crystal Cathedral.
He didn't play it at the Crystal Cathedral it was Riverside Church.

I agree much too fast and thus it loses it's magnificence and grandeur. Especially on such a magnificent piece of music.

That is not true: if you listen carefully he plays a bit slower.

Woeful performance and that dress 👗 !!

Magnificent. Just too fast...

I thought it would sound good if the song ends with trumpets.
Unfortunately not.
Why do they have to translate it, isn't "Tu Es Petra" fine?
Rhythm in the left hand totally lost, too fast.
Too damn fast! And I have the French edition from 1961, and the beginning is marked pp (pianissimo), DUH!!!
Too fast.
Too damned fast, Bish!! Dang!!!!!!

Head of church on earth? Christ is the head of the church. Peter is just a man!
@@bsgarey Exactly.
Too fast.
Jeremy Swist That's her interpretation. Not wrong.
