Last week I received a useful message from my friend Blanka Ponížilová. On a walk she managed to discover a cavity in an old poplar tree from which dozens of bats were flying out at dusk, and she said they could even be filmed easily. I was quite intrigued by this, as I honestly have little experience with bats. Although there must be legions of them living in my favourite forests, it's not easy to come across a particular tree hole. So we agreed to give it a try at the earliest possible opportunity. However, due to other obligations and unsuitable weather, the earliest possible opportunity was not until three days later, and that is a long time in nature 🌳
An hour before dusk we took up our positions. Two different cameras were filming the cavity from different angles, and I imagined an awesome slow-motion scene of dozens of bats flying out of the cavity one by one. Come on, guys, let's go! 💪
However, slow motion takes a lot of light. It was diminishing very quickly before sunset, and the bats were nowhere to be seen. So I gradually set the number of frames on my camera lower and lower until it was clear that slow motion would not happen this time. And there were still no bats. As soon as the sun disappeared over the horizon, the poor GH6 with its small sensor was completely out of commission. Only the S5II remained on the battlefield, valiantly scanning the dimly-lit hollow. It was only when the ISO value jumped to a painful 25,600 at 7:55 PM that a bat finally jumped out of the hole in the tree! 🦇
One. Alone. The last of the Mohicans. He circled around us and it was over.
Blanka probably stumbled upon a winter colony of common noctules that was just breaking up these days. Now the bats will roam the countryside, and then the females will form a summer colony elsewhere. Apparently there were still plenty of them in the tree on the first day, and I just came late. Situations like this are exactly the reason why I stop giving lectures at the beginning of spring and try not to promise people much in general. Because when I'm not flexible with my camera and can't leave the house in a matter of minutes, that's how it turns out 🥲
Never mind, maybe it will work out next time. Thanks a lot anyways, Blanka! 💚
