Many ancient civilizations of the yore built massive temples for their mythological gods .In India too most temples were built by the local rajas for reverence to their state deity. Over time as the kingdom faded, the temples became derelict, deserted and lost in history. Some of the contemporary famous temples in India were in ruins when the Britishers came to India. Most of these temples were discovered by them. They renovated these temples and patronized the Brahmans to establish their hegemony. Same is Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, South America and other places. The western colonizers discovered these temples.
I was there last month and broke down after seeing most of the temples in siem Reap including Angkor wat. Everything is in a bad and dilapidated condition without proper maintenance. All the idols of Gods have been removed and broken. In some areas I had to step on those broken idols to avoid water logged areas. They maintain these temples in a terrible condition. Heartless government.
