    In todays video I discuss my many problems with the current film industry: from Disney remakes, bad blockbuster reboots like Charlie's angels, sequels no asked for, film franchises just in it for the money like Marvel, and all of the marginalised minorities in the industry and much more.

    this remake trend makes it seems like creativity is dying when that's so NOT true. many creative minds are out there having mind blowing ideas just waiting to be published. the issue is the industry's laziness

      It's a safe investment and it the end investors rather support a remake of a Disney film they know will be a success at the box office than lose money on an indie project that won't end up in cinemas. It's shit, but understandable.

      I agree. But the live action and animation department are different though. And animated movies generally take longer to be made.

      At the end of the day, remakes are successful because we, as viewers, make them successful. If people stopped watching them, the studios would cut back on how many they released. My conclusion is that many people like remakes, hence they will continue to be made.

      I remember Ricky Gervais commented on how the US Office was so much longer than the UK version cause Americans drag things out and never want them to be over.

    And I also agree that all these “strong female” movies that are coming out are wayyyyyy too preachy and condescending to me to be honest. As a woman it is kind of cringe and annoying that it’s constantly, “I can do this better because I’m not a man.” It kind of pushes men out of the conversation when we want to be equal with them, it makes no sense

      I'm a lesbian and a feminist but and don't agree with women who want to push men away of the moviment, after all we want equality and this is not how you get it. I totaly support and love female empowerment in media, but there's no need to ridicule all men because not all of them think and act the same. I hate when men believe in female steriotypes so isn't fair do the same thing. I really like strong female characters like Capitain Marvel for example, "strong female movies" should exist, but they have to be done in a good way

It sucks when I go to a movie with my fiancé and he says to me after “well glad I’m a piece of shit for being a man” because all of these movies just continuously try and tear men down so women can stand above them. When that’s not what we want. I want to go to a movie with a strong female role and my fiancé say damn that was a good movie not wow I felt attacked the entire time.

    A few points I disagree with:
    I don’t think it matters whether a straight actor plays the role of a gay person. It’s acting, the point is that people aren’t themselves. I completely understand the race and trans issue, but Love, Simon wasn’t problematic.
    You also said that in Charlie’s Angels, the main characters weren’t actors we were familiar with. I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it gives new actors a chance. Once a celebrity had a role in a popular movie, they’re set for life to be in other great films and other actors don’t get a chance.
    Otherwise, I agreed with nearly everything. I definitely see why you were excited for this video, great job!

    • @nietts
      @nietts 4 роки тому +43

      I think his point with the new actors was that it adds to the reasoning behind why the film flopped (because people are unfamiliar with the actors and therefore won't want to see the film) and further discredits Banks's statement that the film did badly due to sexism.
      ~ I could be wrong though please don't fight me 😅 ~

    • @Bridenbrad
      @Bridenbrad 4 роки тому +85

      Caroline Korman as a gay man I agree with the gay actors point. Not every gay role needs to be played by a gay actor, the whole point of acting is for the person playing the role to take on the life of someone else and play a part. For a gay person to play a gay role that isn’t really playing a part it just becomes a copy of real life at that point

    • @d818581dd
      @d818581dd 4 роки тому +73

      An openly gay male actor has never won an Oscar. We are heading into 2020. The point is, all this talk about gay roles not needing to be played by gay actors (which I think I agree with) needs to be balanced with the critique that there are too few LGBT actors getting straight roles, or any roles for that matter. I think the way of thinking is that gay actors are saying, "hey, we can't get straight roles, abut we ALSO can't get gay roles, what gives?"

    • @d818581dd
      @d818581dd 4 роки тому +14

      It does matter, because these roles tend to always go to straight actors, and that is a problem.

    • @wrenleslie3243
      @wrenleslie3243 4 роки тому +25

      I wouldn’t say it’s “problematic” at all for a straight actor to play a gay character or vice versa. However, the reality is that there are still WAY more straight characters in film and TV than there are gay characters. Casting an LGBTQ actor to play an LGBTQ role and represent the community is a great message, especially for a movie like Love, Simon that was so widely-loved by people inside and outside of the LGBTQ community. I mostly see it as a missed opportunity, and I would appreciate that choice by the filmmakers, though I wouldn’t really fault them for not doing so.

    I think that what happened with Scarlett Johanson was more about timing. When Jared Leto played the character, the world was much less aware of transphobia as a specific unique problem. Whereas when ScarJo accepted her role, the world had changed even in those few years. That hd passed. That said though, female actresses still get so much more scrutinized than men for their choices. ALWAYS. That certainly needs to change.

The whole thing with because she is a cyborg she can be white is plausible but we all saw how stupid it looked when she met her JAPANESE mother. They also knew this was problematic bc they never used her Japanese first name and only referred to her as Major again because they know how dumb it would look and how problematic it is.

    Hey Luke! I love this video and I feel like one thing you could definitely mention in a video is the harsh mistreatment of black actors, especially women. I'm black and I'm trying to act and I have constantly been told I am not stereotypical enough, I have also been told that I am not "black enough" to play roles or that I'm " too light" or "too dark" and most people say to just be in black movies ( like tyler perry movies) but I shouldn't have to do that. There are plenty black actresses who have made it on the big screen and have been strong leads but unfortunately, at least in America, its made almost impossible which kinda sucks like you should read the Straight Outta Compton casting call for black women it was so disgusting which is a huge issue that a lot of people don't bring up! Like why can't they make a Disney princess movie that takes place in Japan or India, or a film based off of the Shahnameh from Iran, or journey to the west from China, or even give Elena of Avalor her own movie, or a film based off of African Folklore. Like honestly at this point, I am sick of these awful remakes. I want more original content, but Disney is to lazy to put these ideas on the big screen.

  • @damariswarkentin4552
    @damariswarkentin4552 4 роки тому +34

    I also feel like they’re making more movies that are “targeted” towards women cause that’s where the money is right now. The public wants more strong female leads.. but the characters are a lot of times still written by middle aged white dudes who have no idea what it’s like to be a woman. So usually these female leads are just hit and miss with no depth. Women always have to loose their lovers to become strong or to realize that they’re powerful. Or that successful women are always bitter and alone, incapable of kindness or basic human interactions. I just think they would do so much better if they actually made Hollywood more diverse but then again i don’t know how it works down there...

    I feel this is actually a much deeper problem and it speaks to our failing culture. Nobody has anything new to say and everyone is too busy trying to relive the past. Every movie is a bunch of scenes more or less saying "hey, remember this? hey, remember that?

    When you talked about the CGI use in movies it reminded me of Ian McKellen struggling while filming the Hobbit:
    “In order to shoot the dwarves and a large Gandalf, we couldn’t be in the same set,” he said. “All I had for company was 13 photographs of the dwarves on top of stands with little lights - whoever’s talking flashes up. Pretending you’re with 13 other people when you’re on your own, it stretches your technical ability to the absolute limits. I cried. Then I said out loud, ‘This is not why I became an actor.’ "

    FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT! I’ve been working at movie theaters for the past 6 years, and i’ve noticed within the past year specifically, there is a HUGE lack of originality. Also, lately Disney specifically has been milking the money all they can because they’re recognizing that all these reboots and remakes are putting big money into their pockets.

    Such great points, loved seeing someone discussing these topics in a logical and truthful way. I feel like many people doing similar videos might want to critique big hollywood movies and franchises, such as Disney's MCU and other blockbusters, but are either too swept up in the "hype" or too intimidated by the fanbase. Therefore they only do it in a half-assed way, keeping the "hype" and impression that these movies are worth all of this money alive.
    You being honest and pointing out the flaws of these movie, actually telling it like it is, really made my day! I would love to see more in-depth analysis and opinions on all of these topics in the future :)

    I agree with most of the things you said today except for the CGI thing. I mean I get that it might be odd that actors don’t interact with each other but If they are still able to give a convincing and moving performance I’m all for it. I’m fine with the industry using the technology they have today to raise stakes and portray emotion.
