I'll politely disagree about the looks. I've seen some that look quite old. And the headlights crazing and turning yellow is nice after a while. Plenty of poor build quality in this generation. The W140 was the last true Benz with overengineering. This one was a failure in comparison. That's been proven over time. You see very few of these still on the road, all are at the wreckers.
I don’t get why this car gets so much hate. These cars especially 2003 and up are solid cars. If you take care of a Mercedes they will take care of you
They pretty much stuck with this overall design from then on. All S-Class models after this looked so ambiguous between each other that it was difficult to tell which generation each one was, from a glance. Even though this gen is the most hated among enthusiasts, I think it looks timeless.
I remember a purple one on the cover of Dupont Registery in 2000. I thought it was a stunning car and loaded with tech. It might not have been as reliable as the W140 but it set the standard for all others cars in this class.
People moan about the maintenance on these, but they don’t consider how state of the art and complex these cars were. The powertrains are extremely solid. The air suspension is a pain, but you have to bite the gold bullet and fix it properly instead of piecing it together haphazardly the way third, fourth, and fifth owners tend to. Also, learn how to deal with stuff like cranky headlight modules on your own as much as you can, as that stuff becomes super expensive at a shop.
The mercedes w220 had an impressive technology, but it did not have the same fit and finish as the previous generation. Also, the 2000 Mercedes S500 was incredibly unreliable due to the electronics problems, and air suspension. The air suspension was incredibly expensive to fix.
And this is the car that was least desirable, didn’t hold well, was plagued with maintenance problems and sent most s class buyers scrambling to get their W140’s and W126’s back.
This generation never recovered from two major issues: 1. It had a tough act to follow (The W140) 2. It was all about cost-cutting, probably because the W140 was over-built, and ran over budget This generation has the lowest resale values of any S-Class
Because certain engines sacrifice optimal spark plug position in exchange for larger valves. Having two plugs allows an efficient burn from plugs that are not in the ideal spot. It’s pretty common…all the Hemi V8 engines have two; so do Ford 6.2L V8 engines.
I cant figure how, but the 2000 model’s front end looks better than the 2003 refresh. Bigger headlights? It has to be something, it’s even more noticeable in person. It’s a shame because the 03 refresh fixed the horrid reliability issues of the 2000 model.
I knew a kid back in my Jehovah’s Witness church who’s grandma bit him a Benz of this style(I don’t remember the middle)but it was if this body style but I thank it was the very bottom model though
Car looks so ahead of its time for 2000. My S430 still operates like brand new. Love this generation
Can’t believe it had push button start and adaptive cruise control in 2000 very innovative.

@@stratfordbabynot my 2005 S430, I recently purchased it from the original owner and it's in great shape with only 91k miles.
@@stratfordbaby, I agree. The W140 was the last Bruno Sacco S Class and it shows.

This is the episode that brought the W220 to my attention. It is the reason that I own a 2006 S55.

W220>w221
Love this version. Minus the ABC malfunction
Very nice this Mercedes S500

its a fucking s-class I don't think price is a concern
@@combustionberg3303 I was talking about the reliability. Calm down girl.
The design of this car is far more modern than most 2023's ones
And this is the car that was least desirable, didn’t hold well, was plagued with maintenance problems and sent most s class buyers scrambling to get their W140’s and W126’s back.
This generation is a disappointment compared to the W126 and W140, a total downgrade compared to its predecessors.
Do u have the 2004 TL video from MW?
Automobile Magazine was high. There are very few of these cars still on the road. The last great Merc was the W140 that ended in 1997.
I see a lot more 220s than w140s
"It's got pep, I'll give it that"
It won’t be cinematic.

W140 was the Best!!!
Why does anyone need twin spark plugs to fire each cylinder 🤔?

English?
Gotta love John Davis’s ostentatious voice.
An outstanding car to be sure, but WAY overpriced...I bought my house in 1999 for $89,900.00...😮😂
There’s nothing impressive about twin spark ignition and 3 valves per cylinder..
Not today no but 23 years ago it was impressive
@@relaxitsme_alex9104it was not. Japanese automakers were doing that in the 80s
@@the8419 no, Alfa Romeo was doing it way before Japan was implanting them. Again still impressive since it wasn’t a common system back then
W140 S class is 30% better quality. This one is the worst S ever. But stiil good
