      YES! That era of the band in general is amazing. I wish they could have stuck together for at least one more album.

    That’s my Suede too. Bernard Butler really fucked them by getting kicked out. Mick Ronson and Johnny Marr’s guitar love child.
    That’s so funny you mentioning that “Metal Mickey” was your introduction to Suede via 120 Minutes. Same for me (I’m 43 and would watch 120 religiously in the early 90s).
    And you’re 100% on the money regarding “Moving” being the hidden gem on the first album. It’s always been my favorite non-single track. “The Drowners” is my favorite of their singles. So classic.

      Thanks, Benjamin! So glad we're in sync on this. And that's a great distillation of Bernard's hybrid guitar style: the power of Ronson with the beauty of Marr. I love that we both met the band the same way. I had a few problems with 120 Minutes as a show (mostly host related), but it introduced me to some great music--and you really felt like you were in a small click of music-savvy American kids just like you. Hope you enjoy my other episodes!

    I also love Coming Up. Picnic by the Sea is incredible. Oasis or Blur? I love Blur, but Morning Glory is untouchable.

    This is great. I love to hear another super fan expanding on why Suede were such a genius band back then. The phrase "they blew me away" when I was 18/19 doesn't quite do it justice. They really were unparalleled.

      Thank you, my friend! You're so right; they really rewrote the book back then. There had been elements of what Suede was doing, in the music/aesthetics of Bowie and The Smiths, but they were such a breath of fresh air at the time, it's very hard to describe to today's music fan. Welcome to the channel, Nathan!

      @@PopCultureGraveyard Have you heard Bernard Butler's collaboration with Mark Eitzel on the album Hey Mr Ferryman, or his guitar appearances on the album Hendra by Ben Watt? Both very different to his Suede years but very classy and well crafted.

    Great Video! Suede is such an amazing band really! I’m a 16 years old guy from Portugal and they will always be one of my biggest inspirations ever and me being a young guitarist, Bernard Butler really had a huge impact on me he is an idol of mine as a guitarrist and songwriter. I got into Suede also with the first two albums and those really are
    magnificent masterpieces. After Bernard left, in my point of view I think that they continued a really great band with really great albums(and continue to do so you should check those out if haven’t already as much as the first two) with Richard Oakes being an awesome guitarist and maybe even better that Butler technically but I must admit Butler had a bigger impact on me. Also they maybe have the strongest B-sides ever, both with Butler and Oakes the B-sides are amazing really. So yes an unique band, one of the greatest of all time :)

      @PopCultureGraveyard  3 роки тому

      Hey Miguel! Nice to hear from a fellow Suede fan! I do like their later albums too, but for me those first two will always be special. It's great to hear a young guitarist is influenced by Butler and Oakes. They're each so underrated and have such style. I totally agree about the B-sides. In fact, I would put their B-sides up against other bands' A sides! Thanks for sharing your love of Suede. And welcome to the channel!

      de que parte de portugal és? tenho 18 anos, e no ano passado fui a vilar de mouros e foi a partir daí que os conheci, têm sido a minha banda favorita desde então. o butler e o richard sao guitarristas fantásticos, cada um à sua maneira, e são a minha maior inspiração na guitarra, para nao mencionar a voz fenomenal do brett que juntamente com a guitarra traz o som distinto dos suede. os b sides são incríveis, das melhores músicas que têm, e é inacreditável que ainda continuem a fazer grandes músicas, em especial o álbum autofiction. é difícil para mim compreender como é que uma banda assim nao é mais reconhecida nem dado o devido valor

    Amazing video! I dislike the fact that whenever someone brings Bernard to the table, they always speak about how Suede made it without him and how they'r a great band without him and blah blah blah. But the thing is Bernard Butler years were their finest, and hang me by for saying it, but they were so incredibly outstanding, and i don't mean outstanding in a good band way i mean a legendary way, those elements and imagery of sadness, sex, poverty, love, cruelty, loneliness were penned down in a way no one has done before in music history and no one will. I applaud Richard, the man was 16 when he filled the biggest gap and he managed to figure out Bernard's work, thinking about 90s tech is pretty impressive, just imagine the guy rewinding his cassettes, cds or vinyls to get the parts right!. I agree in everything with you, except that i wouldn't replace any album tracks with b sides, the genius of Anderson/Butler also relies on b sides being written specifically to be b sides, they were no band putting outtakes or silly gap-filling recordings, thanks for reading, and again, great video, if this were a person to person convo it would last hours. All the best.

    • @PopCultureGraveyard
      @PopCultureGraveyard  2 роки тому

      Very well said, Raúl! I obviously agree about how "next level" their early music with Bernard was. And, as good as they continued to be, it was all built on the back of their legendary status. You're so right about Richard stepping in; it would be the equivalent of someone replacing Johnny Marr in the Smiths after Meat is Murder. Can you imagine such a thing? And you're so right; we probably could talk about this for hours. That's how rich a subject Suede are! Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. Take care!

    The band really peaked with Butler, and Anderson’s songwriting was the best it had ever been during that period. Even though Oakes is a very technically gifted guitarist (some say better than Bernard technically), he doesn’t have the creative and artistic spirit that Bernard yields. Music means a lot more to him, more than a mere sound but a landscape for artistic expression

    • @PopCultureGraveyard
      @PopCultureGraveyard  3 роки тому +6

      I'm totally with you, Niko. I was surprised at the response to this that some people actually prefer later Suede. I mean, hell, some fans who didn't get into Suede until the later albums don't even like the early stuff. That's so crazy to me. I've also heard the arguments about Oakes being "better," but my response is always, "Suede wouldn't have existed for Oakes to play in, if not for Bernard's inspired music." And I agree that Brett's lyric writing really fell off once Bernard left. Drugs? Fame? Whatever the reason, they just didn't have the magic I love.

    • @sunny70299
      @sunny70299 Рік тому

      I don't think it's that he is better technically than Bernard. I feel pretty confident in saying everything Richard can do technically Bernard can too. It's that Bernard doesn't care about technique, he lets his emotions lead him when he plays live. He plays with complete freedom and lacks any inhibition or self awareness. That what makes his playing so incredibly exciting and special.

    I love your evaluation - I’ve been a fan of Suede since first seeing that Moz covered “My Insatiable One” (I’m a very serious Smiths / Morrissey fan). You’re probably the only other American I know who know as much about them as I do. Some of your facts on the first album are a bit off, but I love your devotion to it. It was game-changing. And look, the album was about gay sex - it was a tease to anyone who has ever felt desire. I also got Love and Posion for Christmas of 1994 - my mother found it in an indie record store in Bpt, CT. I can go on about the rest of it all, and DMS, - PS Darkstar is not a ‘nice little track’... It’s a masterpiece. Bernard- I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive him. I had the giant DMS poster at the time above my bed. Thanks to you!

I still have quite a lot of cassettes (you can see my cassette player behind me), and VHS tapes. Too many, to be honest. But the bulk of the apartment is taken up with vinyl and books. When you're a collector, the apartment is never big enough. Thanks for the comment!

      I envy you getting to meet them! It's so nice to hear it was a good experience; it's so refreshing when people live up to our high expectations. You're so right; they were magnificent years, but everything that high quality always seems to be short-lived. I think that much talent getting together in a band is a rare thing, and it can't help but burn itself out in the stressful crucible of a successful band. We're so lucky they recorded as much as they did in that short amount of time. Thanks so much for the comment, and welcome to the channel!

    Great piece. Delighted you decided to focus on Suede Mk. I. They were untouchable in their Imperial Phase (early ‘93 to summer ‘94). Everything they wrote and recorded in that period was absolute gold. Disc 1 of Sci-Fi Lullabies is debatably their best “album”. That My Insatiable One, High Rising and Killing of a Flash Boy ended up as B-Sides is criminal.

    • @PopCultureGraveyard
      @PopCultureGraveyard  2 роки тому

      Thank you! I couldn't agree more that no other band came close to them during their early magical period. As I said, I'd put their B-sides up against other bands' A-sides. Just goes to show how much talent they had. B&B were a very combustable mixture of personalities, though, so I think we're very lucky we even got as much material as we have.

    Suede's first album is killer. Brett's lyrics painted tortured yet exotic tales of sordid inner city life. Butler's guitar work remains off the scale. They appeared out of nowhere and were totally original. Personally, I find ed bullers production on dog man star wonderful.
