  • Ternocon 2018 was a terno-making convention and contest for regional designers initiated by the CCP through its Cultural Exchange Department and Bench (Suyen Corporation). The project aimed to encourage the use of the terno as formal dress, to inspire a new generation of Filipino designers to make ternos that are grounded in the history of the Philippine National Dress, and to motivate regional designers to create works that are at par with the construction techniques of senior fashion designers.
From May 8-10, 2018 a mentoring and preparatory workshop was conducted at the CCP. The Project’s Artistic Director Gino Gonzales together with Ternocon Chief Mentor Inno Sotto, regional mentors JC Buendia (Luzon), Cary Santiago (Visayas), and Len Cabili (Mindanao) shared their respective philosophies and design processes with 30 participants. Twenty-eight designers were finally chosen and asked to create one cocktail version of a balintawak and one formal evening terno each as entries to the competition. The contest proper was held at the CCP main theater stage last November 11, 2018, which included cultural performances that celebrated the diversity of Philippine culture with the participation of some of the country’s most prominent artists and performing groups led by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Hermenigildo Ranera, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Male Ensemble Nine and the Sinala Manunubli of Batangas City.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded for each category. Marlon Tuazon of Angeles City, Pampanga, bagged the gold medals for both categories. For the formal terno, Nenita Morden of Villasis, Pangasinan, won silver and bronze winner was Joseph Bawar of Santa Maria, Bulacan. For the balintawak terno, Dan Ryan Duran of Siaton, Negros Oriental, won the silver and Santi Obcena of Quezon City won the bronze.
The program also showcased terno collections by the three Ternocon mentors and an exhibit by the Ternocon Chief Mentor.

The costumes worned by the cultural dancers are way more superior than the modern creations.
It takes raw talent, vivid imagination, impeccable craftsmanship.

Nice, but the most I like was the patadyong checkered short dress which was for me a correct terno garment/ as close as it could be to a true blue traditional terno, untampered.

Considering the funding from Bench and the production experience of the CCP, I'm just wondering why the lighting and camera work were sub standard. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I am expecting to see a modern approach to the filipiniana dress like combining the butterfly sleeves with a pair of shorts or pants ( from cigarette to palazzo ) and also expecting to see other fabrics like denim or leather.

Hmmm the winning pieces for day wear and evening are meh. At this point, sana ang hinahanap nila is the next Cary not another Dior basic design formula. Nanalo lang sa linis and fit pero design wise leaves much to be desired.
