I don’t think this is related, but adding to the dramatization of deafness, were the first scenes with sign language. It didn’t have subtitles on, and I was getting so frustrated until I realized, that’s exactly what Ruben was feeling like. They start adding subtitles after he learns.

I’m not in your place, and i think the closest i will get to knowing what it feels like is through how it was portrayed in the film. However, i do recommend you to watch the film even if you don’t get to enjoy the sound to its fullest. Guitarist with hearing loss. I watched this last night and it made me incredibly emotional. It terrifies me that I will most likely have to go through the same experience as Ruben and ultimately accept that I will eventually have to quit music - a passion of mine - for good. Agreed. Btw cochlear implants work differently from hearing aids and its really interesting. Hearing aids just amplify the sounds as you already hear them, so it sounds pretty much "normal," unlike the implants, which use their own sound processor to bypass the ear and send stimuli directly to the nerve. So they can be used for completely deaf people. Not trying to nitpick just wanted to share

SPOILER: The scene where Lou sings with her Dad was, in my opinion, the best use of perspective shifting in the film. They held on the normal audio for so long, finally steadied on Ruben's face, and even then waited what felt like forever to actually shift to what it sounded like for him. They had already shown how unpleasant his implants were, but that moment just really hit it home. So well handled, and it built up so much anticipation.

The party scene where Ruben is overwhelmed by the various noises made me so tense. My hearing is ok but in sometimes when too many people are talking (for e.g., at a large dinner party or at a concert when too many people are talking and I can't focus on the music), I experience the same sense of anxiety that I think Ruben was experiencing at Lou's father's birthday party.

I knew seeing even just a small clip from this movie would do it and it did. This was one of the hardest movies to get through as a musician. He goes through one of my deepest fears and it's unbelievably accurate in every aspect. It's one of my favourites but I don't know that I'll be capable of watching it again. Overwhelmingly stunning film.

Notice also how the film only follows Ruben the whole time. It really helps to make us understand things from his perspective. Many films with an isolated protagonist do this, but how dedicated Sound of Metal is to this really brings it home.

I have what I believe is mild hearing loss in my right ear, which can be annoying when I have headphones on cus now everything's slightly panned to the left, I still have 360 sound in general but if I put my finger in my left ear everything sounds slightly quieter and a little muffled... it's such bs to me that natural hearing is a one way ticket
