The sensor in the Sony is 1/5.8" which basically means that even with the iris/aperture wide open there will be a lot of noise. Sony sensors tend to suffer from bad highlight rolloff too; shoot a video with a blown out light source and notice how the blown out area doesn't smoothly go away; there's a "shelf" where it goes from solid white to a lower brightness quite sharply. I own a lot of cameras and I'd be very careful about purchasing Sony hardware. Sony consumer/prosumer camcorders (even the more expensive ones until you get to actual "pro" $4000+ cameras) have manual settings but you can't set more than one thing manually at the same time; this means you can't lock both iris and shutter speed at the same time. In general, I recommend the following. If your camera will mostly be stationary and you can generally control your shooting environment, get a Panasonic G7 with 14-42mm kit lens for $500-$600 new because it is quite possibly the perfect 4K DSLR camera and makes $1000 Canon DSLRs look like junk. If you need the ergonomics, small size, generally larger depth of field, and fast autofocus of a camcorder, get the Panasonic VX870 which is 4K and can sometimes be found open-box for $600. If you don't have that kind of money, get a used Canon T3i with 18-55mm stabilized kit lens for $300 or get a used Canon VIXIA HF R20 on eBay for around $120 because it's almost the exact same thing as the newest Canon R80 series and while it'll still have the noise issue as the Sony it has a larger sensor and costs a lot less. I shot my first music videos and my first short film "The Old Man's Pendant" exclusively on a Canon R60 camcorder and you can see those videos on my channel if you want to see what the quality is like. One thing I do recommend Sony for is cheap action cameras. I have a Sony AZ1 action camera and despite the bad highlight rolloff and the lackluster low-light performance it is one of the best purchases I've made. With a long enough camera pole you can get some CRAZY shots with a tiny waterproof action camera. If anyone reading this wants more advice, reply and I'll be happy to help.
I do pics for a band and use a point and shoot camera....cheapos.....but ok pics. Thinking of going to a camcorder.......I have looked over Zooms Q8 and was impressed at first but after seeing other camcorders in action made me take a beter look at the Zoom. What camcorder would you reccomend in a 3-400 dollar price range ? Zooms audio is impressive but not impressed with the wide angle look.....bent !! I would appreciate your advise.....if there is something in my price range...let me know....band plays nightclubs and outdoors day and nite, benefits, fairs, private parties etc.....Sounds like what I would be looking for???
I am looking for a camera that can record for about 1 hour or 2 hour non stop. is there any camera that recommend for me? with budget about 300$ or 400$
What would you recommend for a camera in this price and quality range (can shoot HD (4K would be great!)), and has a LANC input? Having an analog lanc controller is important for filming soccer games from the press box, because being able to control zoom and quickly turning on and off for restarts is difficult without one. I can only seem to find those on the $1,500 models and up!
Hey Sean. Cause camera with LANC ports are mostly professional. You can take a look at the link I provided below with this controller instead. Then you can purchase a FDR-AX33 with 4K which cost $800+ to use with it. Let me know if you are purchasing from Amazon, you can use my link to buy if you wish to support me. thanks!. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/925709-REG/sony_rm_vpr1_remote_control_with_multi_terminal.html/overview
hi.. i'm looking for a camcorder that's suitable to shoot live bands show in small venues. what woukd you recommend? do u have sample videos of live bands with the Panasonic? thanx!
Sony is a good choice as it gives you ability to use an external mic and headphone and also better recording format. I have one, here from Panasonic. ua-cam.com/video/LQrAQy0-1Jc/v-deo.html
Nice video sample u got there, not bad at all. Thanx for sharing. But i think i'll go for Sony for it's external mic input feature. Hopefully it's as good as your Panasonic.
Deadzid Fardus Sure, no problem. You can check out this ua-cam.com/video/_rvh151rjfg/v-deo.html Is similar to the Sony Cx455. Just that this have a better image stabilization and some other features but in terms of image quality is the same. U can get an idea on how it looks.
Stereo. If you have a stereo mic input, is usually stereo. Even if you have mono mic, the sound will usually comes out on two sides which means if you listen on headphones, both ears can listen to it.
I bought this exact camera and the videos turn out grainy and sometimes out of focus. It might be a settings issue but Ive tried practically everything and no improvement. Do you know what the problem might be? Thanks
Do you mind if you upload the video and send me a link so I can watch and see. If focusing is the issue, it depends in which environment, if outdoor should be no issue.
Hello, very nice reviews! :-), what you think please about Sony CX625 with BOSS? Its quite expensive still, but half the weight than 4K AX53... For 4K clips, I think my other device will be ok and for best movie stability in FHD as main format I consider this one CX625, but saw some comparisons about low-light performance and there panasonic seems to be better.... Your opinion?? Thanks :-)
+Amish Comic Hi. This camcorder can support external mic. The hiss may be due to the poor internal mics picking up noise or the hiss from the auto focus motor sound. So if u use a separate mic, I don't think you will have this problem. Did u use an external mic for your camcorder before? If there is a better choice, I would recommend that you record your audio separately using a audio recorder like a Zoom H1 or Tascam Dr-05. U can watch reviews on the recorder but if you have to sync the audio in post later which will be more troublesome.
+Ephraim Kunorishi I have used an external mic. An Audio Technica PCM24, Problem is I made a poor choice on camcorder by going to cheap. The Canon Vixia HFR600, poorly designed and very fragile. I'm going to be returning the Vixia HFR600 and the Audio Technica mic, I think that will put me close to purchase price of this Sony!
+Ephraim Kunorishi Trying to avoid recording audio separately because I don't want to get too involved in post production for basically video clips of my show for social media. The CAMCORDER HISS is an ongoing problem for consumer video:(
Amish Comic I see. U may want to test out on the Sony first before getting one to make sure. But I guess Sony should be better as it is a more higher quality product.
+Kathlyn Hernandez You're welcome. There are not really much difference from now I can see. The biggest difference is the the BOSS stabilization which is more powerful, the hot shoe for attaching Sony accessories and a better Sony Lens G lens. The CX455 is good for most needs as it has most of the features you will need. I recommend getting the CX455 and save the extra money on memory cards, lighting accessories, tripod, external mic and so on. Is a better option in my opinion unless the 3 I mentioned above is very important to you. **extra note CX675 does have a bigger internal memory of 32GB vs 8GB on CX455 but it doesn't really matters, you can buy a 32GB memory card for very cheap nowadays.

hi there well I do want to get a new camcorder I want to upgrade and I only choose Sony. so I'm not sure of what to get the cx455 or cx675. and also I don't see any new camcorders from Sony this year
Yes, I also haven't seen any new camcorder from Sony this year. CX675 has additional hot shoe and better stabilization. If you got the money, CX675 is better, the image stabilization is fantastic. If not cx455 has everything you need.
it's kinda sad I don't think there making any new ones for this year and yeah the cx675 it a cool camera I Want it just wanted to wait if the price goes down a little
Alejandro1736 I think for camcorder, 2 years one time is better. As camcorder has been really good since last year, like Ax40 and Ax55 which has great 4K. I think it can last for 5 years. 4K is awesome if you have a good pc to play and edit it. Just wait for promotion to buy like deals or black friday. Is much better.
Great video, it's helped me a lot in make a decision. I'm new to the video camera scene. I bought the CX240 about 2 weeks ago and was very disappointed. I know it is an older model but the low light video is simply horrendous. I even picked up some really good lighting and still have grainy video on certain textures. I am returning the 240 and was thinking about a 405 because it at least shoots XAVC at 50Mbps. But getting away from the joystick and having the sound input is a big plus. I looked at a lot of the Canon Vixia models as well. I think Vixias have touchscreen and sound inputs, but they lack in optical zoom and Mbps compared to Sony.
Thank you Ephraim great video. Hello I was going to buy the Sony hdr-cx440! Now I saw your video on the Sony hdr - cx455 it has where a micro fone adapter that's what I was looking for in the Sony hdr-cx455 thank you for the review.

When and why is there noise? I would be using it mostly stationary, on a stand. What cheap cam has no noise? I'll need it quiet, using a exterior mic.

have the sony cx 450 mono or stereo microfone input
Stereo. If you have a stereo mic input, is usually stereo. Even if you have mono mic, the sound will usually comes out on two sides which means if you listen on headphones, both ears can listen to it.
Can it power a non battery powered microphone?
If a mic that works without power on its own yes. If it doesn't, it can't. It doesn't have phantom power.
