I haven't had the pleasure of the reading Angel yet, but definitely thing SGJ is the best horror writer around right now. There are a lot of really fun horror books out right now (including yours), but the way the language in his books can sound conversational and literary at the same time is mind-blowing. He'll write something, and it just sounds like the character talking, but then you look at it, and you're like "how did he put those sentences together!"

just finished angel and i'm with you on needing a re-read of this trilogy. at least until SJG comes out with his next book. going to miss jade terribly, but i'm happy to see her walk off into the sunset.

I love rereading books. They’re different experiences every time.
By the way, I saw you at Monster Mania and had a bigger reaction noticing you than the guests there. I’m from Philly and after discovering your channel lived in FL for a few years/I’m back. Seeing you was like ‘oh, he is real’

I had the same reaction upon first reading HEART that changed with my second reading. After DON'T FEAR, I immediately closed the book and contacted Stephen. I can't remember what I said exactly, it wasn't long, but it was along the lines of, "Jesus CHRIST, Stephen!" I cannot *wait* for the third book.

Hard to say if REAPER or ANGEL is my favorite of the 3. The heart of this newest one is bigger/sadder, but I love the zoomed-out view of part 2. I think having Armitage as a foil/inverse of Jade was genius.

I love My Heart is a Chainsaw. I am so excited to read the next two books. It's such intelligent and emotionally intelligent horror.

Haven’t read any SGJ yet but I got a copy of Mongrels sitting on my TBR pile. My favorite of the current breed is probably Nick Cutter, The Troop is one of the best I’ve ever read.

Troop is great. I’m also partial to THE DEEP, which I feel gets slept on, in his backlist.

Really excited to read the third book next week 👍
I’m definitely a re-reader 😊 I can understand why other people don’t but for me it’s about already knowing that my favourite books are going to make me happy. Been going through a tough time recently and re-reading a bunch of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books has definitely given me a mental lift and lots of joy to boot.

Oh I 100% understand re-reading. Most of the times, even when I attempt, there’s always just that small voice/anxiety in my ear like “what about that other book on the shelf?” Especially since I’m a slow reader!

i started reading My heart is a chainsaw because of the title alone. not gonna lie, the pacing and writing turned me off and i stopped reading but then i found myself in a similar spot as Jade in falling into horror when my mental health wasn't at its best. now i need three more chapters to finish the first book and i absolutely love it so far. i love Jade so much and i cant wait to see her grow into who she is

I got to pick up the last two of the series. I own Chainsaw but haven't read it yet. I was a fan of Mongrels, so I have no excuse.

This particular one is from Fright Rags, but may be out of print? The Slumber Party Massacre license seems to bounce around, I think Gutter Garbs has done a few designs too?

I don't get it. I could barely finish the first book. It's yet another "hey guys, can you tell I'm knowledgeable about horror movies?" book with little else to grab onto. The prose is unengaging, the pacing is terribly slow, and the protagonist is obnoxious. There are only so many meta-textual novels of a writer flexing their horror geek cred I can stomach before it really becomes obnoxious. I feel so out of step with the current crop of horror writers- none of the big names have done a thing for me. Hendrix, Graham Jones, Tremblay etc...all leave me cold.

I mean, everyone’s entitled to their opinions, and not everything’s going to be for everyone. But those three you mentioned are all very different writers doing different types of work, so kind of bummed for you that you can’t find one you like.

I’ve had the same experience with the three authors you listed. Although Jones’ ‘Indians’ made my top 5 reads of the year.
A modern guy I like is Ronald Malfi.
