  • Richard Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman (1843) is adapted from an episode in Heinrich Heine's satirical novel The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski (Aus den Memoiren des Herrn von Schnabelewopski) (1833), in which a character attends a theatrical performance of The Flying Dutchman in Amsterdam.

When I was about 5 years old, my father(1st trumpetist in the National Opera) took me with him down to the orchestra pit in every opera. This one was my favourite, Ι had learnt all the songs by hard and the musicians put me to sing them in the breaks. This opera is permanently written in my heart. It gives me goosebumps hearing the overture...

Like lots of musicians and artists, Wagner lived in extreme poverty for a great deal of his life. In fact he was so poor, he had to go to Paris and ask to be introduced to Pillet the director of the French opera house, in order to propose this piece "Flying Dutchman" to him hoping it would help him.. Sometime later, he discovered that Pillet actually GAVE the sheets to this piece to another musician called Dietsch. Despite his protests, Wagner had no powerful relations, no important friends and he was so poor he eventually had to accept this outrageous deal for a small amount of money. seeing that he finally has credit for this piece and imagining his heartache back in the time, I say It's kind of a bittersweet success.

Israel doesn't seem to give a fuck about how much he had to go through, because many years ago (and I assume things haven't changed ever since) Wagner's music was prohibited in Israel because it was a symbol of nazism and the same kind of bullshit they always repeat. Just because a bunch of nazis suffering from egocentrism would play Wagner's music at concentration camps doesn't mean this music is nazi. Yes, Wagner dispised jews, still he was a GREAT composer and deserves recognition. It's like undermining Heidegger or Heinsenberg just because they partaked in the NSDAP

Wagner's music has never been officially prohibited in Israel, pieces have been played on stage, and you will on occasion hear a piece on Israeli TV or radio.

I think Hitler did know what he was listening to, but his megalomania and other mental problems don't mean he didn't hear what others hear in the music, something deep and moving; neither is it an indictment of Wagner, as you point out, too. I think it's another example of the complexity and of the flaws of our human nature.

As a "lifetime" mortician, as I dismissed a Jewish funeral I softly play Wagner's music. A man said to me "don't you think thats inappropriate music?" I said "no I do not!"

Forget the Nazis. They misused Wagner music for there agenda.
He was a great composer . he was sponsored by King Ludwig from Bavaria, who build Neu Scheanstein Castle.
The Replica you see at Micky Mouse in Orlando.
King Ludwig build it so Wagner can live there an get inspired and compose.

"Oh mighty warrior of great fighting stock; might I inquire to ask; Eeeeh.... what's up, Doc?"
Is it odd that I first heard this in 1997, but only learned it's name yesterday?

It's an ouverture for an opera, and the story is before pirates of the caribbean, about a dutch captain who was cursed to live in eternity on the seas, chased by the storms, never able to reach lands. Only about one day in ten years, he was able to return and reach the lands. And what I figure mainly hearing in the music is the restless tides of the stormy sea. In the opera the captain meets with a woman who falls madly in love with him.

Little known fact: this music was used in "THE LONE RANGER - Season 1 Episode 3 -- 'The Lone Ranger Triumphs'". It is near the end where The Lone Ranger & Tonto, along with men from Colby, fight the Cavendish Gang.

I hear this cut and I can see Star Wars. Indeed, this one musical genius blazed the trail for Hollywood movie soundtracks, long before there ever was such a thing.
I drill down a little further. If the drug Ritalin had been around when Wagner was a youth, we would never have even heard this music.
