Every time I hear Leider, I am astounded anew by her powerful musicality and overwhelming femininity. Her warm, vibrant timbre brings an unwonted erotic charge to Leonora's music, and helps to flesh out a character that, in lesser hands, can come off as somewhat generic. But it is the magnificent legato, vital as that of a master violinist, that really captures the attention. Indeed, Leider's musicality overall reminds us of how bound up Leonora's personality is with her musical profile. More than many Verdi heroines, the Trovatore Leonora takes her emotional cues from musical elements much more than dramatic ones, which makes her a bit of a cipher dramatically. And those trills! So rarely heard nowadays, Leonora's trills, so perfectly rendered here by Leider, are an essential element of the character's personality, an element that contemporary artists ignore to their cost. Schlusnus matches Leider in musicianship and dramatic vigor, a worthy partner for this greatest of German dramatic sopranos. Thank you, Manoli!

She was one of the few complete singers in my opinion. She had all. Beauty, timbre, power, flexibility, style, passion on stage. Sometimes her top was a little insecure, but not here. Her life had great highlights and ended very sadly.

Oh how I agree, a dramatic voice capable of great sensitivity, an enviable legato, a legitimate florid technique, and a radiant feminine tone, absolutely beautiful all around. And sorely underrated by most opera fans sadly

Veramente bravissima.

Yessir Phillip my pleasure! Leider is one of my very favorites, from her recordings of Brunnhilde’s immolation to her Or sai chi l’onore to her O Don fatale! Miraculous singer. Happy Early New Year to you as well!

Such a great technique. Her singing even made me overlook how ghastly Verdi sounds in German lol.
At first I was impressed that a singer had such a vast repertoire spanning Mozart to Wagner but once upon a time this was expected of any soprano worth a dollar! Wonderful trills.

Thank you Manoli, what a wonderful singer. I first heard her in your post of 'Or sai chi l'onore" now I must find her "O Don fatale". I was just wondering how common is it to have Trovatore sung in german? I don't believe I've ever heard of it in Spanish for example. If anyone can share some insight it would be most interesting to me. Thanks again.

      Hi Juan!
Germany has always been an opera-friendly country, even more so than Italy. For several centuries, every town of any size in Germany had its own opera company, and it was always the custom to perform all operas in German. Verdi has always been extremely popular in Germany, and so there are many recordings of his works in German. It did not become the custom to perform operas in their original language in Germany until the rise of Herbert von Karajan, and even today, many German houses still perform the vast majority of their repertory in German. I hope this helps to answer your question!
