You can literally hear the cognitive dissonance inside his brain. Like he knows he is not right but he can't make himself accept that he is wrong. So he is trying to find a reason and coming back to the same circular argument.
that's the hardest part to escape - as soon as I accepted my cognitive dissonance the tower fell quickly... I do think it shows a greater societal problem of a lack of critical thinking these days though.

Red pill: The most notable thing about established, reputable universities is the fact they've been established and reputable for a long time. The actual students, teachers and administration are just normal people who happen to be expert or ambitious *in their own fields*.
I wouldn't say that's the case. University age is without a doubt the age at which the most questioning of beliefs and questioning of oneself happens. Different beliefs get questioned at different times though so it shouldn't be expected that all of those at universities should have already questioned whether consuming animal products is wrong as that may just not have been the questions they've considered yet. I took until I was halfway through university life before I went vegan and I'm someone who likes to challenge my own beliefs regularly
I would say that the fact that these people stepped up to talk already gives them a leg up over many others who just never questioned it. At least he's somewhat interested. It's also very mentally draining to think about everything. Much easier to follow those around you.
Mine changed in university is about who you meet and if they align with an underline beliefs to you. But universities is about grades and the subject matter. I think as more people enter these spaces they'll probably affect some students.
Fair play to the guy, he was honest and didn't try and argue against the indefensible. It's hard to make the right choice after years of just accepting what we're pummelled with in terms of advertising and societal pressure. I think this guy has a fair chance to change. It took me a year of watching Ed's videos too before I finally made the change, eventhough I knew early on Ed is right and I didnt have a single good argument.

Animal food addiction and the convenience or lazyness from humans in healthy food cooking and planning is the main reason most don't acknowledge veganism! Animals suffering is always hidden to reinforce consumption! 👈🌱💚💪✌️
Agree and so disappointing the world won't get the truth out about the killing of animals which is not necessary for protein or a healthy diet for all of us.
Or perhaps people do but they simply choose different paths of change. Life is about so much more than choosing whether you should eat meat or not. We all have our own quests and you can't project your own personal quest on others. This is simply not a one issue world.

and the great thing is that he isn't baiting them to do it in a "ha! gotcha!" way, he's simply letting them do the talking, and then pointing out whenever they contradict themselves. I think that really helps with not portraying himself and the vegan movement as a sort of enemy who is out to get them. I really think the vast majority of people hold vegan beliefs in their hearts, but they just haven't been confronted with their actions.

But this guy was very transparent. “I eat because I like the taste and I’m too egoist to change”. He went around the “humane” thing a bit but he acknowledged immediately every ethical flaw.

It's in the design of nature that some animals have to kill to eat. Don't say that "Animals do a lot of other things that we don't do". That's not my point. Animals do a lot of other things that are not necessary for their survival. But killing is necessary for their survival. My doubt is "How can something be a necessity for someone to survive in the design of nature and still be immoral?"

You expect people change their views overnight, and if they don't conform right away, you cast them out. How about you try to share some empathy for people as much as animals. The controversial part was conflating rape to the consumption of animals. Both being non-consensual. It's contraverial because you'd have insinuate that the animal eater has been an immoral animal abuser their whole life, which can backfire. No one wants to believe they are the bad guy. It sorta worked, because introducing this argument caused him to concede that Ed was right. Only time will tell if he actually decides to conform his ethics with his behaviors.

Yes, it sounds selfish but at least he's very honest about it. Often people come up with all kinds of justifications that make no sense. Let's hope this conversation with Ed makes him think about this topic some more. The fact that he walked up to Ed is actually quite a good sign that he will. I was once quite similar to this guy but became vegan eventually.
The key virtue this guy has is honesty. With some self reflection an honest person being honest to themselves can change their thought processes and actions. With the level of conditioning society has put us all through in terms of normalizing using animal bodies as objects for our whims, it's obviously not going to happen immediately, one has to consciously detangle the web of lies and rationalizations we are all brought up into. All of these unconscious assumptions we accepted have to be dissolved.
That's just how almost everyone grew up, be patient with people, the can change, but also need empathy, as it is hard to change a strong belief, especially so fast.
We have to be empathetic, too. To tell him to his face that he is selfish, self serving and narcissistic would benefit neither Ed, nor the guy. It would probably actually lead to the guy thinking "Vegans are assoholes" and it would reinforce his behaviour. Only through reaching out with compassion and understanding can people accept change. Don't underestimate the condition a kid goes through that eats meat and sees everyone eat meat in movies. Some kids learn that they are eating animals when to go to school, because their parents never told them. It crushed me as a child when I learned that I have been eating chickens, before I was able to decide and understand if I want to.
With the "is the meal more important than an animal's life" argument, I always think of a KFC wing bucket, when I realise a chicken only has 2 wings. If you order 12 wings, 6 animals have died for your one unhealthy 15min meal.
That argument doesn't hold true because the other parts of those 6 chickens also end up on peoples' plates. You basically share those chickens with other people so you shouldn't count them as 6 animals for just the person who eats the wing bucket.

@@moladiver6817 I don't think so, lots of people eat 12 wings on their own. But also, 6 chickens is the minimum amount who died. In reality, a 12 wing bucket can contain up to 12 different chickens, so 12 lives max. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the ratio of lives lost to people eating the chickens is. The ratio doesn't factor into the value of life or the ethical point being made.
Not only do the animals benefit when vegan but we do as well as we finally align our behavior with our ethics cause living disconnected is an awful way to live
The part near the end where you say that his ethics are already nearly there, and it's just his behaviour that needs to change to line up with them, is a point that I think applies to most non-vegans.
People who try to argue against veganism get even more repetitive than in the last years.. it’s as if they themselves know they don’t have any other argument except ‘taste’ and circling back to the original ‘argument’ to not actually start thinking ‘perhaps I could try and change.’ Really peculiar.

That wouldn't be a sound thought process for any other example, if someone was a rapist I wouldn't be overstepping the mark by telling them to stop raping people. Now, you may disagree with it being immoral, I would challenge you to come up with a coherant argument for how that is so, but you may. This doesn't change anything though, there are some moral issues that I disagree with, such as the idea that everyone should accept people identifying as whatever they wish, but I would never tell people who believe those that they should let everyone act and believe what they want. The only way to come to a conclusion on ethical issues is to discuss said issues and for people who believe there is an injustice to share their views and make everyone aware, that doesn't impinge on anyone else's right to do what they believe in
The only people who are going to sit down with Ed are people that are going to tend to agree with some of his points. Most people wouldn't even answer a question such as "Why aren't you vegan yet" since it implies that they need to justify them not being vegan, when they don't. If I was asked why I'm not a vegan I would simply answer that I need to eat meat and the argument is over. Ed's entire argument is premised on eating meat not being necessary. As long as you don't concede that argument he has nothing.
@@MasterMoron But we don't NEED to eat meat given that the human body has no necessity for animal protein. The human body doesn't have a need for the amino acids from cows or dogs for example. So how do we morally justify harming these animals when there are plants to eat?

It IS easy to be vegan. It's only a matter of developing a new habit. A little bit of effort at first, but then it becomes easy. He IS benefitting from being vegan, by avoiding cancer and many other diseases. It's not just a benefit for the animal, also for the person and the environment and the society (less cost for sick people). Great video. Thank you so much for what you do! Yes! Before I was vegan I also had the misconception that it would be this horribly difficult sacrifice. I used to say "I could never give up cheese/eggs/chicken." Turns out after a brief adjustment period it's the easiest thing in the world. Especially now that the replacements are so good that you hardly have to change your diet at all if you don't want to; just buy the vegan alternative. Whether you're vegan or not, we all have our go to food staples that we buy from the grocery store or when we go out to eat. It just takes a little bit of thought to switch these out and then it's effortless. I spend no more time deciding what to eat than I did before I was vegan. An unexpected bonus was finding delicious new foods and spices that I never would have thought to try before. I eat tastier foods now than I ever did as a meat eater.

@@thewhitedwarf3846that's not really an argument. I'll help you out since you're new to this. Let's think about innate traits of living beings that would make it moral or immoral to kill. Compare a houseplant to a puppy for example. A puppy has a central nervous system which can sense "good" from "bad" and in consciousness can create aversions and fears as a result the fight or flight response. Even a young puppy knows they want to live and they do not want to suffer in pain. A house plant has no central nervous system as it has no need to fight or flee. The organism has no care for whether it lives or dies for there is no consciousness to care. It simply is. There are passive defense mechanisms and reproductive strategies, but plants do not need to rely on self-preservation as their regenerative abilities do not require such evolutionarily and biologically expensive mechanisms which animals use. So if we accept, assuming we are non-sociopathic people, that deliberately creating unnecessary suffering in those who can suffer is immoral in some way, what is the uniquely innate trait of some animals that makes it acceptable to cause them to suffer and die, but not other animals like puppies or kittens when they all suffer the same as we do?

I am a vegan activist, so don't get me wrong... There is no single logical argument for or against veganism that applies to everybody. A perfectly valid argument against veganism is: "I don't care about animals, therefore I do what I want with them for my pleasure." There is no logical counter argument against such an argument, because one can not deny that some people are egotists. There is lots of hypocrisy in today's society, which vegans can point out, but ultimately there is no logical argument for veganism. Veganism boils down to compassion, not logic. It is important to get this difference, because in your outreach you should know what kinds of arguments you can counter with logic and what kinds of arguments can only be be countered with an appeal to compassion.

To expand on what @lobovutare wrote: Not only is compassion the basis, being compassionate is, most of the time, in conflict with what people are used to, meaning their habits and the corresponding narratives/beliefs they hold. Changing your habits is not easy. Most people believe that exercise is healthy, but most people still can't be bothered to act on this belief, much less form a habit -- I certainly don't. If you know how the human mind works, it's not actually surprising that people argue against things that clash with their current beliefs and attitudes. And those are valid in their eyes, always. Of course it's "me, me, me" because "me" always comes first. Everybody is the main character in their own story. Many people don't even know not to treat other *people* (expecially children) as objects (of *their* needs). So, I see it this way: For people to follow a vegan lifestyle, they have to discover their compassion for other beings, form a belief that those have value AND that their behavior affects them negatively, and *then* regard the value of those beings as high enough so as to change their attitudes. And only then are they willing to try and form different habits. With this many roadblocks, I think it's no surprise that people are resistant to changing their behavior.

@@helpimlost.62 agreed. Laziness is a pretty human condition though. I am pretty lazy myself at times. I consider myself pretty honest and compassionate though and that probably is why I am vegan. Being intellectually honest is just one of the necessary ingredients for change.

Some conditions are uncivilized, dangerous and need to be addressed openly so that the parents of young children can begin to raise their children with the right ideas and intentions. Most of us were raised by a rather uneducated and unprepared generation of people through no fault of their own. Intellectually lazy people are generally the product of having been raised by intellectually lazy people and thus here we are many generations later trying to exist in a world overrun by stunted people confidently perpetuating their bad ideas. It’s an insane mess that will take generations to improve on. Sadly, it doesn’t feel or look like the good ideas are winning.
I appreciate that Ed got to the end bit because every time he talks to a meat eater they say "if it's humanely killed" yet they eat at fast food or cafeterias where there's no telling how animals are killed (spoiler: not humanely) so they can't even live up to their own values
We are all selfish to desires and wants. The key is recognizing boundaries of where our pleasure harms others and taking appropriate measures to avoid crossing them. This is a bare minimum courtesy people should make, the problem is they don't draw those boundaries for animals as due to social brainwashing we see animals as objects ("it") rather than non-human individuals
Because most people are egoists and lazy thinkers. And so long as social pressure doesn't force them to change, their morality is mostly ad populum. It's easy for me to imagine a world where most people are vegan and the script is flipped, just because it's normalized. It's a cowardly way to live life, but that's what most prefer. Because it's easier to go with the flow than put up resistance for a cause one believes in.
Because the ego holds on to itself in every way it can, discussions like this create such an immense imbalance in oneself that it’s either ‚bring up all of the dumb arguments you can think of to talk yourself out of it‘ or ‚change and question everything you’ve ever known (and do the right thing, meaning that up to this point you’ve always done the wrong.)
Sometimes these conversations make me sad to watch. I was like him at one point. I felt and thought one way and behaved another. Every meal made me a feel guilty. As an epileptic, I have to have a certain amount of protein and fat to keep myself from having seizures and I couldn’t figure out yet what I needed to eat to find that safe balance in a vegan diet. 3 people attempted figuring that out with me and the last helped me figure it out. I have been vegan ever since. I’m so grateful. But what makes me sad is that there was a point where I didn’t know it was a fat and protein imbalance that needed to be fixed to keep me well. And I allowed myself to have meat (fish) purely because of the enjoyment. He reminds me of that place that I once lived and how ignorant I was about factory farming at the time. And at that time I didn’t want to know because I enjoyed it. It’s sad to see this and know I was like that.

I guess it's the "meat norm" of most societies around the world. If you grow up eating meat it's what you know, simple as that. And then there are some people who still don't like the taste of it, just like some people don't like ice cream. To quote Dita von Teese: You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches.

I've been vegan myself since I was 26 years old in 2003, and vegan 95 - 99%+ of the time during my transition phase for the 8 years prior to that. Laws are not enough actually. Enforcement is equally important. In some countries where the enforcement is corrupted or hardly existent, the laws have no effect.
Culture must change. Politicians will just go with whatever is most popular for votes. No politician will make animal farming illegal because they are all corrupt as hell and only care about votes

Ed, I came across your lectures at unis last October-at a time in my life when I was questioning a lot of my life's 'norms' in the pursuit of finding my way back to myself. I grew up on a farm, where killing and hunting where the norm (not out of maliciousness, but more a desire for autonomy which at it's core valued human life over other life). Watching your videos gave me a visceral reaction, and I think I cried for a few days. I think it was the first time I allowed myself to really FEEL what I had been a part of and also what I had experienced too. I have been plant based since then, trying my best to move towards veganism (whilst still being kind to myself when I fall short). This is all to say a big thank you for your patience and challenges of norms in order to help us become more empathic people. I know being a figure head for veganism is probably a pretty difficult place to be sometimes-so just wanted to let you know you are making an impact. ❤

I learned about veganism during my college years as one of my professors was vegan (I think) who exposed us to the animal industry realities, although I quit eating beef immediately, it took me 13 years post college to go fully vegan. A huge part in that was because of the memories from college that never really left my mind. Although these kids don't agree today, they wont forget the convo. They're all smart an open to change which is why they are there in the first place. College forces you outside of your own perspective
Ed, you really have inspired me to go vegan, I have learned a lot from you, and it has been an amazing journey. I learned about, how to debate and approach people, by meeting them at where they are now, and asking questions that they have never thought of before. Planting the seed for them to question, reflect, and transcend beyond culture, tradition, social-norm, and look at things as it is, objectively. It applies not only in veganism, but in all aspects of life. You really are phenomenal, I wish you the best, and keep on inspiring more people like me :)
The mental gymnastics here blows my mind. There really is no justification to kill and eat animals at this point because we've advanced so far that we don't have to. It would help the environment, help address climate change, and is just morally superior to being a meat eater. Really a no brainer at this point. Love these interviews and keep up the good work.
I’m honestly surprised at the comments, but this was lovely to watch. I went to UT Austin so it’s always a favorite of mine to see you visit. I’m also Indian American and vegan. I didn’t grow up vegetarian like this man but it was just great to see that he sees the truth now and I have a strong feeling he will be educating himself further. This was a great watch and you’re both great guys. Also a side note, as I’ve been vegan more and more years I’ve found that I’m less angry the way I used to be when I first went vegan. The compassion and peace has definitely grown for me but that hasn’t stopped my activism, it’s just made it a lot more enjoyable and easier. I’ve practically studied your work for years and you treat the people you talk to with respect and that matters. Thank you Ed.

The vast majority - if not all - of my non-vegan friends will not go vegan simply because they perceive it to be inconvenient. Everything else is irrelevant - ethics, morality, environmental impact, health, etc. While inconvenience applied to various issues in life is often an understandable excuse - e.g., driving cars, using computers and mobile phones - exploiting animals isn’t one of them.

Red pill: The most notable thing about established, reputable universities is the fact they've been established and reputable for a long time. The actual students, teachers and administration are just normal people who happen to be expert or ambitious *in their own fields*.
I wouldn't say that's the case. University age is without a doubt the age at which the most questioning of beliefs and questioning of oneself happens. Different beliefs get questioned at different times though so it shouldn't be expected that all of those at universities should have already questioned whether consuming animal products is wrong as that may just not have been the questions they've considered yet. I took until I was halfway through university life before I went vegan and I'm someone who likes to challenge my own beliefs regularly
I would say that the fact that these people stepped up to talk already gives them a leg up over many others who just never questioned it. At least he's somewhat interested.
It's also very mentally draining to think about everything. Much easier to follow those around you.
Mine changed in university is about who you meet and if they align with an underline beliefs to you. But universities is about grades and the subject matter. I think as more people enter these spaces they'll probably affect some students.

The controversial part was conflating rape to the consumption of animals. Both being non-consensual. It's contraverial because you'd have insinuate that the animal eater has been an immoral animal abuser their whole life, which can backfire. No one wants to believe they are the bad guy. It sorta worked, because introducing this argument caused him to concede that Ed was right. Only time will tell if he actually decides to conform his ethics with his behaviors.

Yes, it sounds selfish but at least he's very honest about it. Often people come up with all kinds of justifications that make no sense. Let's hope this conversation with Ed makes him think about this topic some more. The fact that he walked up to Ed is actually quite a good sign that he will. I was once quite similar to this guy but became vegan eventually.
The key virtue this guy has is honesty. With some self reflection an honest person being honest to themselves can change their thought processes and actions. With the level of conditioning society has put us all through in terms of normalizing using animal bodies as objects for our whims, it's obviously not going to happen immediately, one has to consciously detangle the web of lies and rationalizations we are all brought up into. All of these unconscious assumptions we accepted have to be dissolved.
That's just how almost everyone grew up, be patient with people, the can change, but also need empathy, as it is hard to change a strong belief, especially so fast.
We have to be empathetic, too. To tell him to his face that he is selfish, self serving and narcissistic would benefit neither Ed, nor the guy. It would probably actually lead to the guy thinking "Vegans are assoholes" and it would reinforce his behaviour. Only through reaching out with compassion and understanding can people accept change. Don't underestimate the condition a kid goes through that eats meat and sees everyone eat meat in movies. Some kids learn that they are eating animals when to go to school, because their parents never told them. It crushed me as a child when I learned that I have been eating chickens, before I was able to decide and understand if I want to.
With the "is the meal more important than an animal's life" argument, I always think of a KFC wing bucket, when I realise a chicken only has 2 wings. If you order 12 wings, 6 animals have died for your one unhealthy 15min meal.

That argument doesn't hold true because the other parts of those 6 chickens also end up on peoples' plates. You basically share those chickens with other people so you shouldn't count them as 6 animals for just the person who eats the wing bucket.

@@moladiver6817 I don't think so, lots of people eat 12 wings on their own. But also, 6 chickens is the minimum amount who died. In reality, a 12 wing bucket can contain up to 12 different chickens, so 12 lives max. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the ratio of lives lost to people eating the chickens is. The ratio doesn't factor into the value of life or the ethical point being made.

The part near the end where you say that his ethics are already nearly there, and it's just his behaviour that needs to change to line up with them, is a point that I think applies to most non-vegans.

That wouldn't be a sound thought process for any other example, if someone was a rapist I wouldn't be overstepping the mark by telling them to stop raping people. Now, you may disagree with it being immoral, I would challenge you to come up with a coherant argument for how that is so, but you may. This doesn't change anything though, there are some moral issues that I disagree with, such as the idea that everyone should accept people identifying as whatever they wish, but I would never tell people who believe those that they should let everyone act and believe what they want. The only way to come to a conclusion on ethical issues is to discuss said issues and for people who believe there is an injustice to share their views and make everyone aware, that doesn't impinge on anyone else's right to do what they believe in
The only people who are going to sit down with Ed are people that are going to tend to agree with some of his points. Most people wouldn't even answer a question such as "Why aren't you vegan yet" since it implies that they need to justify them not being vegan, when they don't. If I was asked why I'm not a vegan I would simply answer that I need to eat meat and the argument is over. Ed's entire argument is premised on eating meat not being necessary. As long as you don't concede that argument he has nothing.

Yes! Before I was vegan I also had the misconception that it would be this horribly difficult sacrifice. I used to say "I could never give up cheese/eggs/chicken." Turns out after a brief adjustment period it's the easiest thing in the world. Especially now that the replacements are so good that you hardly have to change your diet at all if you don't want to; just buy the vegan alternative.
Whether you're vegan or not, we all have our go to food staples that we buy from the grocery store or when we go out to eat. It just takes a little bit of thought to switch these out and then it's effortless. I spend no more time deciding what to eat than I did before I was vegan. An unexpected bonus was finding delicious new foods and spices that I never would have thought to try before. I eat tastier foods now than I ever did as a meat eater.

@@thewhitedwarf3846that's not really an argument. I'll help you out since you're new to this. Let's think about innate traits of living beings that would make it moral or immoral to kill.
Compare a houseplant to a puppy for example. A puppy has a central nervous system which can sense "good" from "bad" and in consciousness can create aversions and fears as a result the fight or flight response. Even a young puppy knows they want to live and they do not want to suffer in pain.
A house plant has no central nervous system as it has no need to fight or flee. The organism has no care for whether it lives or dies for there is no consciousness to care. It simply is. There are passive defense mechanisms and reproductive strategies, but plants do not need to rely on self-preservation as their regenerative abilities do not require such evolutionarily and biologically expensive mechanisms which animals use.
So if we accept, assuming we are non-sociopathic people, that deliberately creating unnecessary suffering in those who can suffer is immoral in some way, what is the uniquely innate trait of some animals that makes it acceptable to cause them to suffer and die, but not other animals like puppies or kittens when they all suffer the same as we do?

There are just No valid or logical arguments against veganism.

There is no single logical argument for or against veganism that applies to everybody. A perfectly valid argument against veganism is: "I don't care about animals, therefore I do what I want with them for my pleasure." There is no logical counter argument against such an argument, because one can not deny that some people are egotists. There is lots of hypocrisy in today's society, which vegans can point out, but ultimately there is no logical argument for veganism. Veganism boils down to compassion, not logic.
It is important to get this difference, because in your outreach you should know what kinds of arguments you can counter with logic and what kinds of arguments can only be be countered with an appeal to compassion.

Changing your habits is not easy. Most people believe that exercise is healthy, but most people still can't be bothered to act on this belief, much less form a habit -- I certainly don't. If you know how the human mind works, it's not actually surprising that people argue against things that clash with their current beliefs and attitudes. And those are valid in their eyes, always. Of course it's "me, me, me" because "me" always comes first. Everybody is the main character in their own story. Many people don't even know not to treat other *people* (expecially children) as objects (of *their* needs).
So, I see it this way: For people to follow a vegan lifestyle, they have to discover their compassion for other beings, form a belief that those have value AND that their behavior affects them negatively, and *then* regard the value of those beings as high enough so as to change their attitudes. And only then are they willing to try and form different habits. With this many roadblocks, I think it's no surprise that people are resistant to changing their behavior.

Some conditions are uncivilized, dangerous and need to be addressed openly so that the parents of young children can begin to raise their children with the right ideas and intentions. Most of us were raised by a rather uneducated and unprepared generation of people through no fault of their own. Intellectually lazy people are generally the product of having been raised by intellectually lazy people and thus here we are many generations later trying to exist in a world overrun by stunted people confidently perpetuating their bad ideas. It’s an insane mess that will take generations to improve on. Sadly, it doesn’t feel or look like the good ideas are winning.

Why do so many people struggle to admit they're wrong and confess they should change. It's so damn irritating.
Because most people are egoists and lazy thinkers. And so long as social pressure doesn't force them to change, their morality is mostly ad populum.
It's easy for me to imagine a world where most people are vegan and the script is flipped, just because it's normalized. It's a cowardly way to live life, but that's what most prefer. Because it's easier to go with the flow than put up resistance for a cause one believes in.
Because the ego holds on to itself in every way it can, discussions like this create such an immense imbalance in oneself that it’s either ‚bring up all of the dumb arguments you can think of to talk yourself out of it‘ or ‚change and question everything you’ve ever known (and do the right thing, meaning that up to this point you’ve always done the wrong.)
Lots of meat eaters like myself don't believe we are wrong. Why would we change?

Sometimes these conversations make me sad to watch.
I was like him at one point. I felt and thought one way and behaved another. Every meal made me a feel guilty. As an epileptic, I have to have a certain amount of protein and fat to keep myself from having seizures and I couldn’t figure out yet what I needed to eat to find that safe balance in a vegan diet. 3 people attempted figuring that out with me and the last helped me figure it out. I have been vegan ever since. I’m so grateful.
But what makes me sad is that there was a point where I didn’t know it was a fat and protein imbalance that needed to be fixed to keep me well. And I allowed myself to have meat (fish) purely because of the enjoyment. He reminds me of that place that I once lived and how ignorant I was about factory farming at the time. And at that time I didn’t want to know because I enjoyed it. It’s sad to see this and know I was like that.
At least he is honest about the fact that he just likes the taste of meat.
I am wondering what it is with that taste.

I guess it's the "meat norm" of most societies around the world. If you grow up eating meat it's what you know, simple as that. And then there are some people who still don't like the taste of it, just like some people don't like ice cream.

Ed, I came across your lectures at unis last October-at a time in my life when I was questioning a lot of my life's 'norms' in the pursuit of finding my way back to myself. I grew up on a farm, where killing and hunting where the norm (not out of maliciousness, but more a desire for autonomy which at it's core valued human life over other life). Watching your videos gave me a visceral reaction, and I think I cried for a few days. I think it was the first time I allowed myself to really FEEL what I had been a part of and also what I had experienced too. I have been plant based since then, trying my best to move towards veganism (whilst still being kind to myself when I fall short). This is all to say a big thank you for your patience and challenges of norms in order to help us become more empathic people. I know being a figure head for veganism is probably a pretty difficult place to be sometimes-so just wanted to let you know you are making an impact. ❤

I bet this guy was an economics student. He would never be sensitive to the argument of suffering, pleasure vs pain, etc. He needs arguments about value, that's what he came back to each time. The value of humans vs animals, the value of a dog vs a chicken, etc.

It is simple selfishness. Nothing more to it than that.
I learned about veganism during my college years as one of my professors was vegan (I think) who exposed us to the animal industry realities, although I quit eating beef immediately, it took me 13 years post college to go fully vegan. A huge part in that was because of the memories from college that never really left my mind. Although these kids don't agree today, they wont forget the convo. They're all smart an open to change which is why they are there in the first place. College forces you outside of your own perspective
Ed, you really have inspired me to go vegan, I have learned a lot from you, and it has been an amazing journey. I learned about, how to debate and approach people, by meeting them at where they are now, and asking questions that they have never thought of before.
Planting the seed for them to question, reflect, and transcend beyond culture, tradition, social-norm, and look at things as it is, objectively. It applies not only in veganism, but in all aspects of life. You really are phenomenal, I wish you the best, and keep on inspiring more people like me :)

The mental gymnastics here blows my mind. There really is no justification to kill and eat animals at this point because we've advanced so far that we don't have to. I’m honestly surprised at the comments, but this was lovely to watch. I went to UT Austin so it’s always a favorite of mine to see you visit. I’m also Indian American and vegan. I didn’t grow up vegetarian like this man but it was just great to see that he sees the truth now and I have a strong feeling he will be educating himself further. This was a great watch and you’re both great guys. Also a side note, as I’ve been vegan more and more years I’ve found that I’m less angry the way I used to be when I first went vegan. The compassion and peace has definitely grown for me but that hasn’t stopped my activism, it’s just made it a lot more enjoyable and easier. I’ve practically studied your work for years and you treat the people you talk to with respect and that matters. Thank you Ed.

The vast majority - if not all - of my non-vegan friends will not go vegan simply because they perceive it to be inconvenient. Everything else is irrelevant - ethics, morality, environmental impact, health, etc. While inconvenience applied to various issues in life is often an understandable excuse - e.g., driving cars, using computers and mobile phones - exploiting animals isn’t one of them.
