David is the reason I still regularly spin my original self titled first album. The drums on that album were groundbreaking in 1994. Only Paul Bostaph was on his level back then.
Ray's technically a better drummer but overplays in a band like Korn where the music is better suited for a drummer that can step back and sit in the pocket and groove which was David 100%. David meshed with Korn's sound so much better whereas Ray would be better suited in a prog metal band or something where his skills would be better showcased and appreciated. This is not saying Ray is terrible in Korn because he does fine in the band but sonically David was as crucial to Korn's sound as JD, Fieldy and Head are. No offense to Munky but he's the one member of the original group that could've been replaced and he wouldn't really be missed. When Head left, his presence was immediately missed and noticeable, same with David. The rest of the band held up the ship but the sound wasn't nearly as magical.
Munky was the guy who brought down tuned 7 string guitars into the band so I’d say he’s still crucial for the band. He’s good with weird sounds as well. The truth is that the magic that the band used to have is no longer there after losing David and Fieldy.
They're both great. David had the groove. Ray has a talent for accenting phrases to play up the drama. He has made it fun to hear the song in a new light. I think Falling Away From Me shows a better contrast between their styles.
Yep. And to be honest, that also is applied to all their best songs and albuns witho those epic drum beats. Ray is in the band for longer and still have none of that

Davids drumming alongside brian head welch guitar riffs were fundamental to the sound, when both were gone they really struggled for identity with some bad albums and then the singer infused dubstep and other edm sounds which really split the fans. Since head's return those stomping heavy riffs with catchy chorus song structure came back just wish had that groove of silveria in the pocket too.
I'm very conflicted, because David has always been my favorite drummer and his work on the first 5 Korn albums are absolutely brilliant, he was definitely a big reason for Korn's signature style. Although, on See You On The Other Side, David was really not present. I feel he devolved as a drummer since then, relying too much on double bass, and not keeping it simple anymore, trying to always make his beats complex, it's not horrible, but not at all as good. On the other hand, David's live performances were always very good during his time with Korn... Now, Ray Luzier I didn't care for when he first joined. I thought his drumming was okay on the album POT, K3, and Paradigm shift. But then again, korn was very electro based at that point so can't blame him. But then, I watched many live performances of Ray's, and I instantly liked his live energy more than David's. Not only because of the stick tricks, but in general, his attitude, and fills I really have a lot of respect for. Although I did feel like he messed with a few of David's signature songs, to divisive results. So by 2016, I was still really missing David. But then SOS released, and I had a little more respect for Ray's style, and what he brought to the table. Then everything changed when I listened to The Nothing... Not only one of Korn's best albums ever, but also some of the best drum work I've ever heard from Korn. So as it stands, I like Ray more than David. But I sure do miss David from the 90s...
