- a basic, simple explanation of VoIP for a non-technical
person. Voice Over IP is rapidly changing the landscape of
voice telecommunications. The driving factor is how cheap
it is relative to traditional phone services. Roughly half
the cost or less!
Plus, VoIP is so much more powerful and agile than
traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). All those
bells and whistles you have to pay extra for with the phone
company (call waiting, Caller ID, 3-way calling, call
forwarding) - those are all included in the basic VoIP
service.

I'm always trying to gain additional knowledge I've encountered VoIP we actually had a short conversation about it on a job site but you really gave me an understanding of things and I greatly appreciate it thank you very much and keep up the good work

Emergency Systems such as alarm systems and elevator are still require POTS copper line because they are required by some cities.

ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) are small inexpensive devices that convert VoIP to analog signals for alarms and elevator phones. This is the most common way to provide POTS now.
@@rpsmith You're missing the point here. The Voip to Analog Device is still a device that is connected to a switch somewhere. You lose power to the switch, you lose connection to the phone. The POTs line already provides direct power to the phone. If you are dealing with permits, they are going to want to see POTS line connected to elevators.
@@pobertubbesing -- There maybe some locals that require POTS line from the Telco but all the ones in my area are just fine with an ATA.
Actually now that the recent FCC rules have changed no longer requiring the LECs to maintain POTS service, we may see acceptance of ATAs pick up speed. Or, a lot of devices that relied on POTS may switch yo Ethernet or cellular data.

Calls be is talking about are VoIP to Pots. VoIP calls to traditional phone system. Which requires a phone number. There are other systems.
Obi boxes allow you to talk box to box. Anywhere in the world for free. And nearly every app like Skype. Messenger, FaceTime do app to app calls world wide for free.
For sure VoIP is less expensive, but sometimes it can be free. Depends on who you want to call

It really is crazy how cheap VoIP is compared to the old circuit switched lines. Recently I helped my parents drop their copper land line, it just wasn't worth the $35/month for a basic local-only (LD was like 0.40/min) line with no features (not even caller ID, that would have cost like $15 more per month).
I switched them to a cellular plan with a GSM ATA (only $10/month, and they get caller ID for free), in the future I'd like to get them set up with VoIP but I need to figure out some weird issues I've had in the past (like one-way audio, echo, choppiness, and even calls randomly not going through at all). I'll check out the providers you listed in the description, and maybe try forwarding the RTP port range to my ATA (previously I never forwarded anything through my NAT). I may just need a higher quality ATA as well, I'm not sure if my Cisco SPA122 is a good quality ATA or not, or if my issues are all network related.

I have an unusual situation that Im wondering if a VOIP system would be the best option. My mother is confused and in her home alone. We are having trouble with a phone. She does really well when we are on a video call with her, say on facetime. Looks like one can get a video Voip system. Does this mean that the person who has the video voip system can get a video call from a person on the other end who is using facetime?

But still have some wondering, What if I'm using VoIP to call someone using old classic landline who have no internet, How will he connect to me with no internet, and if the cloud PBX service do a classical call for me, then how it's cheap??
VoIp service is designed to still connect to old-fashioned landlines. 😄

Can I connect these IP phones directly to SIP providers without deploying IP-PBX system? I was just curious. For example, if I have just one phone on my network then what is point of deploying PBX.
Definitely. A cloud VoIP service is all you need. No need to have a local PBX. If you are ok with email-only support and want a reliable service for low costs, check out callcentric. 😀

life saving video. I still use copper wire telephone network at home. So, I was tensed at class when teacher told me that telephone line can be connected though switch. LOL, I feel so stupid right now. Didn't knew tech advance that much.

Yes, most voip services (especially cloud based) offer “call forwarding rules” which do exactly what you mentioned.
There is also something known as “Forking” which allows the call to ring on both the voip phone and a mobile at the same time.
Is this suitable for a private home user ie just one phone in the house

Hello. I'm wondering the specifics of VoIP. Do you know how specifically the bits in the packets are used to transport audio that sounds accurate? I figure there's some sort of 'pich bits', and others of the sort, but how can bits be used to transport the timbre of the sound? I suppose the tldr question is how can bits effectively transport correct sounds of a voice? Are the packets exceptionally large? What application layer protocols does VoIP use? Thanks.
Hi Gary. Assuming your question was not rhetorical, the technical answer would probably be out of my capabilities to explain.
I’ll have to refer you to look up the popular codecs that VoIP uses to capture and decode the audio stream. The most popular and typical default is called G.711. But there are others with varying degree of fidelity and bandwidth consumption. Ie. G.722 or G.729. 😊

Basically an analog sound wave is recorded at regular intervals (that’s your frequency e.g. 44kHz) by something like a microphone and then pitch and volume are assigned bits (or I imagine Bytes) and stored in binary. Although a digital recording will never be the exact same as an analog one, it should be close enough where you couldn’t distinguish between the two

8x8 is great if you're a mid-sized or larger. They also have "8x8 Express" for small business. Stay away from Ring Central until they figure what they doing with this whole Avaya thing.

They dial on your SIP number which you can get from different service providers.

Yes, you can set up your own SIP server (voip server), but its a lot of work in my opinion. But it would be 100% free to rum except for the electricity.
If you want to pursue it, look at Asterisk or 3CX.

yes, voip phones are similar to computers in that they connect to the internet via the same type of connection. so with a router and switch you can have several voip phones.
What type of protocol is built into the phone that tells the switch or server "hey, I'm a phone and I need to speak to this number" ? Does it deal with a specific subnet? Thanks in advance.
The most common VoIP protocol is “SIP” . SIP is the signaling to handle all the details of connecting one party to another. Then once the calls is setup the sound is carried by “RTP” (real time protocol). 😊

Exactly. Most Routers don’t provide POE (power on the network cable to make the phone run), so you most likely will need the power adapter that plugs into a electrical wall outlet. 😊

Timmy thats true, in some cases. The VoIP community has wised up and most now use TLS (encryption).
but, even with plain ol’ telephone service, there are just as many security holes as unencrypted VoIP..

Hi Lauren. Yes and yes to both your questions. VoIP phones can be both hardwired and wireless. You can even convert regular Polycom hardwired phones to wifi (ua-cam.com/video/oOxqIDf_Hlo/v-deo.html )
Calling directly from your computer is done with what they call a s “softphone”. Or, in some instances directly from your web browser using something called Web RTC.

Those phones (like the one in the video) only draw 5 watts. Just about any POE switch should be able to handle that. Take a look at BV Tech switches. They are reliable and very affordable.😀

I've used Callcentric for years and had good luck. They are extremely affordable, but don't provide live phone support - everything is email. They're based in the US too.
HOWEVER, I do a LOT of VoIP installations. Generally, if the issues you are having are audio quality (drop-outs, clipping, silence, one-way audio, distortion), then the problem is often in the local network or the Internet Service Provider.
Before you go switching to a new provider, I would do some checking on your own network first. A quick thing to check is bufferbloat. This is a common cause of call quality issues. Just lookup "bufferbloat test" and run it.

the VoIP phones have software in them already (some proprietary Polycom operating system). The service is usually either a cloud provider. So you wouldn't need any special software.
However, if you want to create your own, local VoIP phone system, you can get free software like Asterisk or FreeSwitch. But, unless you are really into that kind of programming, I would go with the cloud providers.

yes, voip can support 2-way intercom with Polycom handsets (probably other brands of handsets too).

Hi Ruth. Not seamlessly, but they do make something called an analog terminal adapter (ATA) which allows you to convert voip service to be compatible with traditional phones. 😀

Stephan, when you switch to a VoIP provider, your phone number is "ported" over to the VoIP provider. In otherwords, instead of someone like AT&T or Centrylink handing your phone number, the VoIP provider would then handle your phone number. (think of a VoIP service provider like a phone company)

So here I am with fibre broadband and paying a fortune for it (around £350 per year) with a telephone line that doesn't work unless there is an electricity supply to the router box (VOIP telephone). Can anyone please explain why then I am being screwed by the supplier for the privelege of sending voice signals (telephone call) using the same line as the data line used for internet access? 🤨

So that’s a commonly asked question. I believe the answer is still NO. I researched this quite a bit back about 4-5 years ago. Now, there was a time when google voice actually did have sip credentials you could use to setup a physical phone. But those days are gone.

Any ISP will work. But, you do meed a cloud voip service. Or, you can setup a VoIP server (not recommended).

Yep, a very common refrain. 😄
I will keep the landline as long it is offered. 100% reliable is a landline, it's very cheap too and save from radiation.
How is a phone number determined ?
In the world of VoIP the phone # you get is determined by whatever address you state. (Area code and exchange). BUt, in many cases you can easily choose phone numbers outside your true physical location. For example if your physical office was in Dallas, but you wanted to appear to have a location in Houston, you could ask for a phone # with a Houston area code (713, 281, etc.)
Unlike traditional phone company lines, VoIP has tremendous flexibility like that. There are so many other things VoIP can do that traditional phone service cannot.
