      @@spearfisherman308 Short answer: No
      Long answer: the biggest problem with weapons that chamber cartridges bigger than the standard 556, is the weapon system, generally, grows in size and weight. In a jungle environment, this becomes a nuisance VERY quickly, especially when hiking. That mf will get caught in everything and anything. From the employment standpoint,the reason is, with machine guns for example, in order to utilize them to their maximum potential, you need to be able to “sweep” a large area with them, that large area, again to be most effective, needs to be damn near, if not straight up flat. Here in lies the problem; Jungles are anything but flat. This area also needs to be relatively clear of trees, and debris which leads me into my next point about indirect fire weapons such as mortars and grenades launchers. The requirements for those weapon systems is very simple but in a jungle, these weapon systems biggest enemy, is the jungle. The vegetation is so thick that, attempting to utilize indirect fire, will fail unless you really pay attention because branches and trees will catch the round and probably throw it back you. Same can be said about grenades. Again, you have to pay attention. It’s possible, but very difficult and risky.
      Now per say this particular machine gun, I would definitely want to be able to have some time to play with it, but I more than likely won’t be able to because I’m not cool like that. The decreased weight is definitely attractive. As well as the higher caliber.
      If anyone has any further questions, you’re free to ask. I’ll answer to the best of my knowledge and abilities.

      You know those "50 cal" ammo cans? Each of those weighs 34 lbs for 100 rounds of 50 BMG. I don't know how much 500 rounds of linked 338 NM weighs, but I bet it's a lot less than 170 lbs. The point of this is to beat the long-range ballistics of 50 BMG, with a gun similar in size and weight to the M240. I checked with a ballistic calcualtor, and 338 NM does beat 50 BMG.

    • @shred1894
      @shred1894 8 місяців тому +8

      @@timewave02012 You aren't humping '50 cal' ammo cans on patrol. This wouldn't be replacing the GPMGs that are already being fielded by troops due to the weight of the ammo, and the army wouldn't spend the money to replace Ma Deuce since it makes more sense to 'keep the 50' from a logistical standpoint. As for countries other than the US, they wouldn't field it with their troops either for the same reasons, and their mounted guns are usually 20mm so why would they take the 'step down' to .338 NM. Mind you none of this is factoring special payloads that .50 BMG is known for either.
      I can only see this being adopted as a niche use GPMG for special forces operations.

    • @timewave02012
      @timewave02012 8 місяців тому +3

      @@shred1894 I get it that they don't take an M2HB on foot patrol, but the idea is to have the ballistics of 50 BMG with a loadout that isn't completely unreasonable. Thanks to @tha_black_merc, we know it's almost double the 7.62x51 ammo weight, but not nearly as bad as 50 BMG, where you only get ~100 rounds for the weight of 500 7.62; yet the ballistics (bullet drop and wind drift) for 338 NM are slightly _better_ than 50 BMG, and there's room in the bullet for AP and incendiary payloads. Is it worth it? Maybe. I don't think it's as bad of an idea as changing the individual rifle to the Spear in 6.8x51. Increasing range at the expense of weight makes more sense for MGs and DMRs than individual rifles.

    After some research it looks like this is a roller delayed blowback system. I can’t quite be certain that the barrel isn’t reciprocating but it certainly looks fixed in place. In that case the weapon this is closest to in operation would be the HK21. What is very interesting is how the bolt design can absorb so much energy in such a short receiver. From the disassembly pictures it looks like there is a complicated buffer system involved. I’m guessing the roller geometry is ridiculously tightly tollerenced and perhaps a two stage spring system is implemented to absorb energy as well. Very cool system.
    Testing will reveal how long such a system will hold up under constant use. My suspicion is for SF types it won’t be an issue if the guns need to be rebuilt every 5,000 rounds but that would be a dealbreaker for the regular army.
    I do always appreciate the salesmanship of these videos, helpfully pointing out that unlike the M2 this gun can be rapidly detached from its mounting. Like the only reason guys don’t should carry M2’s all day is they can’t be bothered to dismount it.

    This new weapon system is awesome, revolutionary, and basically guarantees battlefield Overmatch wherever it is employed. One downside I see is the visible and felt recoil in full auto but the power of the round and velocity to reach out to a "1600m effective range" definitely makes up for that. Also it could be easily employed as a Sniper System as well in the same mission. Just a wonderful piece of kit I hope the US Military takes a good look at, especially for Special Operations and even Ranger Battalion level. Keep up the great work!

    I think I speak for many of the American people when I say we want a GPMG of 7.62 NATO or greater punching power (.338NM is an attractive alternative) to replace the 240B. And I think we want someone manufacturing it who isn’t already in control of the Army’s new battle rifle, SAW, and pistols.
    As a former Cav Scout, I loved the 240B and coaxial C, but, I think it’s time we upgraded our armor-defeating capabilities and modern auxiliary features. That quick-change barrel looks especially impressive.

    I’m just gonna say that I don’t like this gun. Three reasons: 1, It is super long(over 1 meter even when folded), 2, It is as heavy as fuck(more than 12kg), 3, it is basically an MG42 with a new skin, and that system is just outdated as crap. The only good thing I found interesting is the loading system, which does help when a gun is equipped with a long scope. Other than that however, I would say that this gun just doesn’t work.

It gets the range you need with higher velocity and lighter rounds and a lighter gun. Meaning guys can easily deploy this in the mountains as opposed to the m2 which is a significant emotional event when dismounted. Also Kiowas and other aircraft can stay in the air longer because they can carry more rounds per pound

    Any chance of using "constant recoil" tech no minimize recoil to the bare minimum? I see room to extend the rear receiver toward the buttstock to allow for increased bolt carrier travel so it doesn't slam the rear wall but instead is reversed by spring resistance alone.
