i was thinking about ariana grande for this whole video, she’s put so much effort into having a super specific brand image. you would only need to draw the hair and everyone would know.
So, fun fact, this wasn’t done for branding at the start. You probably know but Ariana used to play a redhead character in a Nickelodeon tv show, so she had to dye her hair. When her contract with Nick was over, her hair was completely destroyed from bleaching and she couldn’t possibly go out with it like that. So she started wearing extension ponytails. Extension ponytails are much easier to manage than normal extensions, you can apply them yourself and stuff. So she started by just wearing it while her hair was still on treatment, but it eventually became her signature look. Before that, the red hair used to be her look, but people don’t even remember her red hair nowadays.
Yes, but i also think it's slightly diminished that she seems to lack a clear racial heritage. Depending on the drawing, she can be white, black, Hispanic or even East Asian. Yet again that has become a part of her caricature to an extent as well.
The best modern example I can think of (aside from the obvious) is RBG. She changed her glasses and her collar a bunch of times over the years, but her hair was pretty well-recognized and static. The side-parted and pulled-back hair, square horn-rimmed glasses and lattice collar always said RBG pretty distinctly to me.

I’m French, and when you showed the caricature of de Gaulle I instantly new it was him, even though I couldn’t recognize the American figures on the other caricatures.
I’ve drawn myself as a minimalist caricature, I have a gap in my teeth and I wear heart glasses and have an undercut with a bun, so I emphasize those features when I draw myself making a very distinct brand for myself
Moral of the story : the reason behind J.J.'s many hairstyles, both facial and cranial, was to make it impossible for anyone to durably caricature him. Smart move.
Off the top of my head, the most visually recognizable UA-camrs would probably include Casey Neistat, Logan Paul, Shane Dawson, Trisha Paytas, Markiplier, Jeffree Star, Chris Ray Gun, Contrapoints, Karolina Zebrowska... I'm sure there are many more, but they're the first to come to mind. I was just thinking recently about how so many UA-camrs either try to create a certain brand for themselves with their style, or they try far too hard to be "relatable"
South Korean here; the person with a most recognizable visual shorthand to most Koreans would probably be Kim Jong-il. He had a very recognizable (maybe even iconic) curly hair and square glasses, although I don't remember seeing a minimalist caricature of him.
Something I came to find really interesting during a music showcase livestream for smaller Japanese UA-cam artists was how the chat managed to fairly quickly create an emote pattern for each artist. For example you'd have things like 🐣🎶🐣🎶, or 🗻🐑🗻🐑 that would distinctly be obvious to the viewers who was being represented.
Yeah kanye modern kanye is pretty minimalist and he's always had a pretty toned down style which is ironic considering his notoriously wild personality
I don't know if it's been said but binging with babbish has a very iconographic (probably not the right word) face. His sort of egglike head with a beard and thick square glasses makes it very easy to draw him as a black and white caricature, just beard and glasses, which I think is even his UA-cam channel icon. good video as always :)
Sam O'Nella Academy is just a stick figure with long hair. And Oversimplified is the circle as a head and a rectangle body. Also, Alex Trebek is an example of somebody who got rid of something iconic. His moustache.
I'm from Germany and our chancellor Merkel can be easily reduced to four different features: 1. Her hand gesture is the most prominent. 2. She ALWAYS wears the same type of blazer, only different colours. 3. Her hairstyle is also really iconic because it staid basically the same for her 16 years in office. 4. And lastly she has these lines from the corners of her mouth down that frame her chin.
Cody from Alternate History Hub has pretty much done this himself: a circle head on a square body wearing wearing a hat and sometimes holding "The Atlantropa Articles." He even sells plushies of his avatars now.
9:28 It didn't take me a second to identify that guy as Charles de Gaulle, probably because of the catchy "Super Preachers -Vive Le France Libre- The Underdog (2010)" song I have been listening to a lot since the famous speeches video.
I'm from Chile and I think former President Allende would fit in a minimalist caricature: his big black bold glasses frames, his grey/white moustache and that's all you need yo recognize him.
I feel like a good example of a youtuber you could satirize in this way could be pewdiepie. He has a pretty distinct hairstyle he's had for a few years. I feel like a good characterization could be the hair, plus a big goofy smile, as he seems pretty happy and almost bubbly in his videos.
Skrillex. his hair is pretty iconic and i never know how to describe it to anyone outside of calling it the "skrillex" haircut. he'd make a pretty easy caricature.
If you flipped the cantaloupe over in the Gandhi "minimalization" at the end, (12:44) it could easily be Gorbachev, even though he didn't always wear glasses they humanize the cantaloupe enough that the stem mark (or plant belly-button) does all the heavy lifting imo.
In the uk, Churchill: hat and cigar The queen: short, short hair and this very specific kind of dress Thatcher: formal dress, hair and nose Jeremy Corbyn: big forehead and nose Boris Johnson: hair and messy clothes Stephen hawking: weel chair, glasses and forehead
I think a good example of visual or iconic imagine is the U.S.A five star general Douglas MacArthur who was often seen wearing Ray-Bans sunglasses and had his corn cob pipe resting between his lip along with U.S.A his uniform and general cap.
in peru, i believe you could easily draw probably the most iconic president we've had in recent decades, alberto fujimori, by simply drawing his hairstyle, big glasses and asian eyes; same thing for a historic peruvian indigenous figure, túpac amaru the second, which is often portrait with long hair and a top hat
Growing up in late Troubles era Belfast in the 90s, Gerry Adams & Ian Paisley were caricatured so extensively, I knew their characteristic symbols long before knowing the men themselves.
JJ: I do not find memes all that fun because I just don't think there's that much artistry to them Me: why would you say something so controversial yet so brave
I never thought of that! Like JJ said, a lot of these memes are either just photographs with text, or common drawings that are caricatures not of real people, but groups of people grouped only by the memes (for the latter, think the "Chad vs. Virgin" thing at 11:42). And I may add this: that's not to mention how, sometimes, certain memes can be cliched, even to the point of losing their original meaning... if there even was a good meaning to begin with!
Ok, well. I really don't like the whole meme taking over all of comedy thing. As someone who really appreciated the finer bits of what makes things funny, it's a bit obnoxious to have people call any comedic thing that happens a "meme". Or for people to have replaced "I'm just kidding, Bro!" with "it's just a meme" as an excuse for them being an asshole. But even with all that chip on my shoulder towards memes, and trust me *shudders* it's a big one. I can't agree that outright calling them of little artistic value so not very enjoyable is anything other then possibly a bit daft (I know, buckle up. I'm really letting loose with the insults here xD ) The best memes aren't about the exact image that was drawn or spliced together. About how difficult that process was or how well it turned out. It's about how well they can convey a message through those simple images and phrases. The artistry comes from the idea of a picture being worth a thousand words. (Plus add a few words for good measure) And from ones ability to find symbolism that everyone will understand where no one else could before. While of course playing with referential and cultural humor. TL;DR. The art is the message, not the picture. In my opinion, and we are aloud to have differing ones. Meme's are extremely analogous to Exactly how caricature find their humor, I think anyways. That is, of course. Only the best ones. There is just as much garbage as with anything else. 🎩👌
The UA-camr Memeulous is a good example because his “disguise” that he wears is so distinct you just need a cap, sunglasses and a bandanna around his mouth
Rhett and Link immediately come to mind. They had a fan once send them blindfolds with busy brows for Rhett and glasses for Link. They've since stuck with that theme and remade those same blindfolds in that style and it's like it's become their brand. Rhett has the bushy brow and beard and Link with his silky, styled black hair and glasses.
John Howard, Australia’s second longest serving PM, is very well characterised and satirised. I’m sure most of these would it be able to tell if he was drawn with a few lines
I come from Israel and here some of our simplified characters: Naftaly Benet: Large bold head, large teeth and small Kipa. Statik and Ben El: Large teeth, crazy hair and gold necklaces Eyal Shani: Crazy hair, lips always forward (like a kiss) and large glasses.
What's kinda weird though, I tend to have almost cartoon visualizations in my head of people in my life that i am pretty close to. If I knew how to draw, I would draw them.
It's not that weird, we often develop visual codes like this for people who are close to us. When I was in college I would love to draw weird abstract caricatures of my friend.
I think the reason caricatures work is because our brain represents faces that way: we focus on what is different from the norm and use that as clues to recognize faces faster.
I would literally die of happiness if JJ were to tie his hair in a manbun. Edit: Gandhi - glasses and a dome head. Netaji - military cap and glasses. Nehru - topi and thin face.
I’m Brazilian and we have no shortage of both old and new celebrities that can be minimalized into a few characteristics. If there’s something Brazilians are good at, is being creative, stylish, and branding ourselves. Eneas Carneiro had his big glasses and distinctive beard. Carmen Miranda with her headpieces and eyebrows. Silvio Santos with his classical haircut and a microphone on his neck. Xuxa is always the first person who comes to mind when you ask a Brazilian to think of a blonde woman. Matheus Canella always wear these almost child-like caps and a very sparse beard and mustache. I could be here all day. I really like the case of Brazil’s biggest youtuber, Felipe Neto, has a very very very simple hairstyle but it became so iconic to him that basically all caricatures of him resort to the hair. I think it’s the hairline plus the flow. And he had multiple phases in his branding, which lead to very different caricatures over time. He used to wear distinctive sunglasses, a few years ago he had a very ugly mustache, he had various colorful hair phases, and now he’s on a more serious and simple note due to the pandemic, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he came up with something new in the near future.
In the Netherlands there's this politician called Geert Wilders who can very easily be caricatured because of his blond, combed back hair, as well as the current prime minister of the country, Mark Rutte, who is very easy caricatured thanks to his glasses, hair and facial expressions (especially his laugh and his confident smile).
I'd say anna wintour is probably the most successful modern caricature, and it's very much due to a deliberate effort of hers like you were talking about with older celebrities. Also, I think your long hair is best lol.
In the 90s you could draw a foot or a shoe and everyone would know it was the prime minister Ingvar Carlsson, he was nicknamed “sulan” which roughly translates to the underside of the foot. In Sweden.

One of my favorite aspects about J.J.’s videos is how you can select any video of him from any time period and his hair and clothing style will be distinctly different.
Hi, it was a nice surprise to see my caricature of Salvador Dali on your video. Thanks.

Smart move.
The Reinvention of JJ McCullough sounds like a homage to Madonna LOL

Brilliant thumbnail, JJ! I could tell straight away that it is a representation of Winston Churchill, and that drew me to the video.
I can also tell that was Churchill! He's done a good job of making himself recognizable, with that cigar and the hat!
the fact that I knew it was De Gaulle, but didn't know it was Kanye makes me think I'm not very up to date with the pop culture 😅
Haha same, I feel like it’s even weirder since I’m American and so far removed from most of what De Gaulle has done
As someone who has always been a fan of caricatures it’s been great to see these 2 videos!
8:54 The association of shutter shades with Kanye West was during his Graduation-era specifically in the music video of “Stronger”
I'm from Germany and our chancellor Merkel can be easily reduced to four different features:
This is all incredibly interesting. It's so nice to watch a UA-cam channel that isn't just reacting to content that someone else created.
JonTron and Anthony Fantano are two UA-camrs off the top of my head that you could easily create minimalist caricatures of........12:42 oh wait....
Cody from Alternate History Hub has pretty much done this himself: a circle head on a square body wearing wearing a hat and sometimes holding "The Atlantropa Articles." He even sells plushies of his avatars now.

You just be drawing Ned Flanders at that point
also his black-red swirly pattern he uses for his "brand" has become a pretty strong identifier, same for the brofist
And he obviously scores higher than anyone on the recognition test
No
11:42 Every time I look at a meme like that, I instantly think Pewdiepie when I see the guy on the bottom.
Skrillex. his hair is pretty iconic and i never know how to describe it to anyone outside of calling it the "skrillex" haircut. he'd make a pretty easy caricature.
If you flipped the cantaloupe over in the Gandhi "minimalization" at the end, (12:44) it could easily be Gorbachev, even though he didn't always wear glasses they humanize the cantaloupe enough that the stem mark (or plant belly-button) does all the heavy lifting imo.
Have you considered making a video on political party symbols, it’s something that has always interested me?
Definitely the Angry Video Game Nerd, personally I think he is one of the most Iconic YT characters.

The queen: short, short hair and this very specific kind of dress
Thatcher: formal dress, hair and nose
Jeremy Corbyn: big forehead and nose

in peru, i believe you could easily draw probably the most iconic president we've had in recent decades, alberto fujimori, by simply drawing his hairstyle, big glasses and asian eyes; same thing for a historic peruvian indigenous figure, túpac amaru the second, which is often portrait with long hair and a top hat
Growing up in late Troubles era Belfast in the 90s, Gerry Adams & Ian Paisley were caricatured so extensively, I knew their characteristic symbols long before knowing the men themselves.

JJ: I do not find memes all that fun because I just don't think there's that much artistry to them
Me: why would you say something so controversial yet so brave
I never thought of that! Like JJ said, a lot of these memes are either just photographs with text, or common drawings that are caricatures not of real people, but groups of people grouped only by the memes (for the latter, think the "Chad vs. Virgin" thing at 11:42). And I may add this: that's not to mention how, sometimes, certain memes can be cliched, even to the point of losing their original meaning... if there even was a good meaning to begin with!
@@Hand-in-Shot_Productions no offense but I don't think you understand my comment lol
I'm really letting loose with the insults here xD )
The best memes aren't about the exact image that was drawn or spliced together.

Rhett and Link immediately come to mind. They had a fan once send them blindfolds with busy brows for Rhett and glasses for Link. Naftaly Benet: Large bold head, large teeth and small Kipa.
Statik and Ben El: Large teeth, crazy hair and gold necklaces
Eyal Shani: Crazy hair, lips always forward (like a kiss) and large glasses.
Brian David Gilbert, I wouldn't say had a single look, but I bet you could make a recognizable icon by utilizing the hair, large eyes and finger nails
I imagine that people think of Kanye wearing the shutter shades because he wore them in the Stronger music video, which is his most popular single.
I think it's safe to say that most of us are always staying up on Friday night to catch JJ's upload

In the Netherlands there's this politician called Geert Wilders who can very easily be caricatured because of his blond, combed back hair, as well as the current prime minister of the country, Mark Rutte, who is very easy caricatured thanks to his glasses, hair and facial expressions (especially his laugh and his confident smile).
who can forget the minimalist caricature of Alfred Hitchcock from the intro in his anthology series Alfred Hitchcock Presents:

South park does a really good job at simplifying celebrities with very little detail
