One of my favourite comics ever, it made me fall in love with Superman and showed me you can write a fantastic story with him, even without supervillains.
Superman is a simple person who just wants to help people. He see's himself as an equal and treats people the way he wants to be treated. It his warm heart of empathy that wins over me. he is more mindful and kind. Superman might be Overpowered. But he knows how to control it and respects it.
With Gunn taking over and making a film called "Superman: Legacy," in addition to him talking about how there are too many superhero movies, it would be cool if the legacy of Superman is what is important, and the movie is his take on this story. About a different type of Superman. Good vid.
Thank you so much for watching this very old video of mine, and still finding enjoyment in it somehow. I would definitely like to see a more slice-of-life Superman stories on the silver screen.
Thank you very much! I'm shocked this video gets the traction it does despite its age and quality. I'm glad you enjoyed this; but if you did, you're sure to like some of my current stuff (which I work much harder on)! No pressure to check it out though. It really means a lot that you commented on this.
I took a chance on this book, when I saw it at my local books a million and I sure glad I did, it was a great and inspiring book and I would love to see it on film. Great video by the way, keep it up.
Just finished reading this story as well a few days ago and just subscribed to your channel. Keep going, kid! Always happy to support a fellow Filipino comicbook reader too!
I remember not buying this because, at the time, I was far from impressed with Stuart Immonen's art, which I knew from an Avengers fill-in and the one-shot Superstar (also written by Busiek). Yet, it was right here that he matured as an artist, and his subsequent work in Nextwave and Ultimate Spider-Man is much more dynamic, with a solid pencil line and better facial expressions. This Superman is an apologia of the Earth-Prime Superboy, who at the time was undergoing a revision as a villain by the pen of Grant Morrison.
I enjoy the duality of secret identity and superboy prime. Prime is more wish fulfillment, every kid wanting to one day just fly up into the air and become their favorite hero, only for that to all be stripped away and showcase the darker side of that, with prime despite his amazing powers not being able to cope with tradegy due to his previously average life, and lashing out with the ridiculous power of pre-crisis superman. Secret identity meanwhile is more grounded, showcasing what a person who has been granted, remember, prime was from krypton while secret identity clark is merely a mutated human, meaning no aliens or anything of the sort, the powers of superman in our modern world that has its own superman as a comic book would deal with and shouldering a responsibility that feels like they're just acting out a comic book.
I will forever love Superman because though he is overpowered on paper, nobody who thinks this factors in his genuine love for the human race. My favorite theory involving Superman: His secret identity works not just because he adjusts his posture and wears glasses but because he's TRYING to act like a normal human despite being the most physically powerful man in the world. Its also the idea he has of humanity: frail and in need of a savior and also.... genuinely worth saving.
Heh. Reminds me of a thing that happened some years ago. I was hanging out with my friends at a pub. One of them had to go home early so they went outside to wait for the bus. A few minutes later, I got a call from them saying that they didn't have any change for the bus far and the bus was almost there. I had a big note so I frantically ran to the person at the register for some change, they luckily gave it to me and I raced to the bus stop. Coincidentally, I happened to be wearing a Superman t-shirt at the time. But I managed to just reach them and give them the change. Seeing me run like that just to give some change, they said, "My Hero!" I still think about that. I really want to do the best I can for the people in my life.
Welcome! I read the graphic novel of this from my local library years ago. Kurt Busiack is a terrific story teller. His Fables series is another great read!
You know, I've known you in the Superman community for a while. You always are watching the livestreams of ComicPOP and CapedJoel, and you never stop talking about Jon Kent everywhere (which is both a good and a bad thing).
Just watched a few episodes of Superman The animated series and realised he isn't as OP as I thought Also this review is really in depth for what I assume is a 13 year old
Hahahahaha! Thanks for the compliment. I actually didn't grow up watching the animated series, so I might need to check that out one day. Also, I was actually 16 in this; but I look really young for my age (I am the shortest in my grade), so it makes sense you would think I'm a 13 year old.
@@spectacularlysentimental Today i did a double feature. Superman secret identity and batman creature of the night. Kurt busiek is quite an amazing writer isnt he?

Wow. Thank you for your very informative comment about Stuart Immonen's art, Paulo! I might have to check out his other works as well.
