It'll be my first 3D printer having been interested for years but worried the troubleshooting and modding would be more effort than the actual print process. Based on this video I'm super happy with my decision and hope Anker iterates on the firmware to fix these minor issues. Thanks Jessy!
Yeah the machine prints so dang nice. Just some basic issues that would further improve things if fixed. For sure want to see more from them on the slicer/ai etc

I agree with you totally on the "open the box and it's ready to go" comment haha, I'm so sick of spending days to weeks modding, waiting on better parts, testing... It gets really old, and I'm pretty much done with doing that after doing it for so many printers over the years. Great video that answered some questions I had as well, so thanks for that UJ!
So, the AnkerMake M5 you have is noisier than you’d like, and it has some software/firmware issues that appear to be annoying-but-non-fatal bugs that don’t change the fact that for the most part, it’s a boringly reliable and predictable machine that prints very nicely at at least a bit faster than most machines. I’ve backed both, and both have their risks and pluses. I’ve also signed on for the V6, and hope that works well, as well as the package with the AMS for the Bambu. I create game pieces with 8 colors in the design language, so I’m one of those oddball use-cases. The AnkerMake doesn’t appear to be viable for the higher-end/temperature filaments, which I also have a reason to use, so perhaps they’ll in many ways be a complementary pair.
Same, fingers crossed on the v6, but then again I figure if it doesn’t work as advertised it’s still effectively a 6 spool drying chamber… which honestly for the cost would be reasonable just for that function alone.
With regards to the fans, Anker actually already addressed it to the Kickstarter backers. The fans themselves are being switched out for quieter ones, and it's supposed to be configurable when they run... eventually. Whatever that means.

This is exactly why I did not preorder this printer, and I will not do so. Noone mentioned anything about noise levels from what I found, because I was only able to find sponsored "review" and "hands-on" videos. I got a Prusa Mini+ instead, and its quiet. Not whisper quiet, travel moves where the bed moves quickly do make a noise, but it's nothing compared to the constant sound of the M5 you showed us. For me, this is more important than fast printing. Cause longer prints will still run over night, in my bedroom, whilst I'm trying to sleep. Note: I am using an enclosure with a self-built filter inside [using a hepa+activated carbon combo from an existing printer ecosystem], as well as an air filter meant for rooms with both a hepa and activated carbon filter aswell. This seemed like an easy printer to set up and use, and it came along right when I got a new job with a good paycheck giving me some spending money so I figured I'd go for it as my first 3d printer. Going to say your video title had me worried XD
I was torn about not backing this KS. Your honest reviews and follow-ups have confirmed that, for now, I'm glad I waited and backed the Bambu X1 instead.

While I have the technical experience to fix any machine I have, I just rather have something reliable that I don't have to think twice about when I hit print.
Immediately backed this after seeing your first video on the m5. Seeing this non sponsored video has definitely eased any concerns I might have had about this printer. My only concern now is the slicer and the extra features that we haven't really seen in action
Backed and waiting for my production model as well . Glad to see someone going through the process of getting the details on the entire print process for a new to the market printer . I am also curious as to how well Anker's own brand of filament will work . Have you tried printing with flexible filament or any other filaments that are otherwise tricky to get working for most other printers ? Thanks for all the info In your videos .
Glad to see this video! It is far too common for creators to just be positive about something. I am also glad to see that most of this is all firmware based. Maybe that fan would require some hardware stuff, but not too much. At those kind of speeds, the noise is unavoidable I dont think. The Slicer ABSOLUTELY needs to be available to reviewers before printers ship.. Cloud software always worries me because of the issues with data security, open ports, etc.
I just subscribed when you said you are going to do a bambu lab video and a X1 vs M5 video. Can't wait to watch those. Please post them asap I'm looking forward to watching. Thanks for the non bias video. I hope ankermake address all these. Especially the noise factor. I backed 8 of these and a V6. Can't wait!
Good to know. I think I'm making the switch from resin to filament... I'm so tired of the cleanup process and having to wear a respirator if I want to use my studio, and was hoping to see some reviews for big bed printers that print quickly and make super clean looking stuff.
As excited as I am for the AnkerMake, I decided not to back it simply because there will likely be a fair number of upgrades and, maybe, a release of a larger version of the printer, I think it seems like a great machine and am certainly interested to see how the production model turns out.
I mean I doubt it as the whole thing looks pretty closed off compared to the Ender series. Also I don't see it selling as much just because of the price... not sure why anyone would buy this over a Prusa and given the price point... Building on your "print again" improvement, probably should have a history queue instead. That way you can print a sequence of files if you're building/selling models that requires multiple prints.
Didn't know about this until a few days ago. I currently have an Ender 3 v2. AnkerMake looks like a step up to me. Am I right? But how do they compare?
if they cannot (or even if they can) reduce the noise levels for the production unit, maybe we can convince them to add a “quiet hours” feature where it pauses printing for a set time (ie. Night time) and resumes later. I’m very worried about noise since I live in a smaller place and regardless of where I put it I’ll always hear something. Obviously this will happen with any printer but Anker’s seems smart enough to implement such a feature.

Hopefully they do some massive upgrades on the design. They are gonna fall flat on their face if Bambu labs Carbon x1 is successfully shipped. I am kicking myself for backing this. When the money was taken the same day bambu announced I cried a bit. Especially after the Ankermake m5 review agreements were leaked. It showed they weren't reviews but forced talking points. That scares me.
I'm a backer w lots of experience. As long as this thing doesn't need torn apart every month for complete servicing, ill be happy. I dont expect perfection from anything, just my money's worth! I'm gunna stuck a .1 on it and test out some minis!
If you were wondering. I’m one of those guys who ordered the V6 engine for multicolor prints. They said it’s still in développement, probably won’t have some news for a few months.
Nice review! I think initial production is supposed to start about now, but things like file selection could definitely be improved still, if not already done. Did you receive any software updates during the time you tested this printer? The "grinding" during the home-process is probably because it uses hard-stops, possibly with motor feedback, instead of end-switches. I think this is good because it should be more reliable than end switches.
Regarding the timelapses: I'm guessing they integrate special commands in the generated G code to record another frame of the video (at the end of a layer), and that's why other slicers can't do that yet?
Have you considered that the printers which will ship already have these issues fixed or was this video actually meant as feedback for the company before they ship? You have one of the first versions. It would only make sense for a lot of these issues to be resolved before shipping.
Great content, ordered 2, I too am interested in the 6 colour changer, but didn't order because there were no updates about it or videos, information etc, any tips for best software to start designing your own products?
asking for some sort of preview of the print object based on a Gcode file shows that you know absolutely nothing about what Gcode is and what it does. name your files accordingly to know what it will print.
My first 3D printer was a Prusa Mini (DIY kit). But that one was a nightmare in terms of reliability. Probably while building the printer together I had some screws too loose and others too tight, resulting especially in under extrusion issues and a lot of failed or not so nice prints. That's what drove me to SLA printers and the Anycubic Photon Mono X. But if the AnkerMake is really that good and reliable... wow... guess I should consider switching to that printer in the future ^^ Looking forward to the first in depth reviews.
If you bought a 400 dollar printer and having issues promoted you to not only buy a new printer but also get a printer of an entirely new format, maybe 3d printing isn't for you. What are you going to if your SLA printer starts having issues?
strange argument. The Anycubic also had its issues, but one mayor advantage: as long as the room temperature is not too cold - the printer is incredibly reliable. I had no printing failure in months… and I am not interested by the way in spending hours and hours just to fix my 3D printer, but I want a printer that just works. For printing prototypes and cases.
Cool review and all the problems you mentioned are firmware related. Even the fan can be turned off if you modify the firmware. The usb drive I'm using is Samsung and I never had a problem with files. Once again great review, thank you.
I have $700 to spend on a new 3d printer. I have an Ender 3 now but looking for something a little faster. Speed is nice but I would rather have nice prints can you recommend this printer for purchase? BTW It took me 6 months to save this money so I really want the best bang for my buck out of the box, no upgrades or mods needed!
I saw this video a few months back and joined the kickstarter campaign. Got my M5 before Christmas and would LOVE to see your views now that it is in production. Some of your bugs have been addressed, but your views would be great.
Did I hear you correctly? You have to use their slicer to send files wirelessly? There is no other way to upload files? If not, that is a deal breaker for me. Not going give up PrusaSlicer.
I'm pretty new to 3D Printing myself so I was wondering if I have to use some sort of special 3D Filament. If not where can I get the Filament for this printer then?
Another possibility from my 3D "uncle." Hardware stuff I'm willing to overlook because I'm confident in fixing them. But firmware/software issues....naw. Less willing to deal with that. I do hope AnkerMake addresses them.
That grinding, couldn't it be that they use the stepper stall surge as finding home? There's a term for it, can't recall but it's possible in newer drivers to do this.
Printers like this are great for print farms. I love to tinker so I don't mind. I bought an i3 clone I had to build 100% and then tinker to get it printer so well now. I print at 70 mm for my fastest prints. I could go higher but just haven't tried. Nice video!
it's brand agnostic. Get anything in 1.75mm and you're good to go. PLA is the easiest to get started with, it prints well and I have had very good experiences with eSun PLA+ but honestly haven't tried many brands as this one served me well from the get go.
I'm instantly allergic to any kind of vendor lock-in. My first encounter with a 3D printer was one that locked you into using their slicer and even their rolls of material. Never again!

How would you compare this to something like the Neptune 3?
Neptune 3 is much more budget friendly at $200 and prints amazing. Highly recommend. Def not as fast, or have a camera / mobile app etc
Any filament suggestions for this printer outside of Ankermake's own?
Bamboo labs looks a better (and expensive) machine overall … bigger build volume, faster, working multicolor, closed chamber and working software
Haha it’s been a huge mess for me. Been posting daily about it on their Facebook and discord and my tiktok.
What 3d printer would you suggest for 3d printing a shoe sole?
If you were wondering. I’m one of those guys who ordered the V6 engine for multicolor prints. They said it’s still in développement, probably won’t have some news for a few months.
Thanks for the follow-up video!
Thanks for the video and staying positive.
On the fan thing, shouldn't that just be a gcode for startup/stop?
Really want to buy this but still waiting on your follow up post kickstarter...
Regarding the timelapses: I'm guessing they integrate special commands in the generated G code to record another frame of the video (at the end of a layer), and that's why other slicers can't do that yet?
I always like to wait for Version 3 of a new Product 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for sharing.
Fan always on is the best option unless it's possible to have the fan on based on temperature. And a loud fan is the disadvantage of printing fast.
Do you have an updated video on the released version?
Have you considered that the printers which will ship already have these issues fixed or was this video actually meant as feedback for the company before they ship? You have one of the first versions. It would only make sense for a lot of these issues to be resolved before shipping.
how much leveling skill is needed for the bed level or is it just screw together and print thanks
@@glowing_kitty or just assemble it correctly...
Is the maintenance easy and also is it good quality parts.
Is there a video of yours that say why your filiment prints look so dam good? Is it expensive filiment?
What slicer do you recommend with this printer?
Cool review and all the problems you mentioned are firmware related. Even the fan can be turned off if you modify the firmware. The usb drive I'm using is Samsung and I never had a problem with files. Once again great review, thank you.
Im excited to get mine soon!
I'd wait for the production release and then see what they fixed and didn't but that's just me. Creality taught me not to trust kick starter projects.
Yep, Entire point of the video. Show what’s wrong, hope it nudges them to fix, and I can compare with my production unit I ordered.
Did you not like these things at the time of your initial Kickstarter review?
hopefully they will release large version of this printer in the future(400x400x400 for example)
I'm pretty new to 3D Printing myself so I was wondering if I have to use some sort of special 3D Filament. If not where can I get the Filament for this printer then?
You can get filament on Amazon
Between Anker and Bamboo Labs which would you recommend?
Honestly, it hung I’m going towards the Bambu but I put I a preorder for Prusa xl so we’ll see if that ships soon
Any updates? It's been about a year since this post
Another possibility from my 3D "uncle." Hardware stuff I'm willing to overlook because I'm confident in fixing them. But firmware/software issues....naw. Less willing to deal with that. I do hope AnkerMake addresses them.
What about the hotend? Is it all metal?
How does this compare to the bambu printer
Awesome my friend, keep going with important content.
Any chance someone can ID the various models he has sitting behind him and on the desk? A lot of interesting ones there that I've never seen before
Talk about some of your favorite production filaments please
My goodness, I backed this, then I saw this video thumbnail and about had a heart attack. Then I watched it and felt much better.
Grinding sound - maybe they used sensorless homing?
That grinding, couldn't it be that they use the stepper stall surge as finding home? There's a term for it, can't recall but it's possible in newer drivers to do this.
It's sensorless homing, but it should stop the motor before the Gear starts to grind...
@@moedaraz7922 I agree. But I don’t think there was grinding gears. I think it was the stepper losing steps we heard;-).
uncle jessy do a video on the mars 3 pro.. im waiting on mine form the pre-order!
NExT WEEK!! Got another fun Elegoo video planned for this weekend 🙃
@@UncleJessy can't wait broski
Printers like this are great for print farms. I love to tinker so I don't mind. I bought an i3 clone I had to build 100% and then tinker to get it printer so well now. I print at 70 mm for my fastest prints. I could go higher but just haven't tried. Nice video!
What printer I could buy that print out metal objects?
Could you make update? The software is fixed.
The file one happens with the ender 3 v2 as well.
Do you have the Ender 3 Pro I just got one and wanted to know what filament it takes and if it’s even good
it's brand agnostic. Get anything in 1.75mm and you're good to go. PLA is the easiest to get started with, it prints well and I have had very good experiences with eSun PLA+ but honestly haven't tried many brands as this one served me well from the get go.
Yo ur the best u have inspired me to get my own 3d printer hopefully I get it 🔜
they can for sure be a lot of fun and there are a ton of options out there to consider
But why buy this over the P1P?
uncle jessy love you i just bought 5 of ankermake m5 es hope it for my business hope everything works greeting from Georgia
Kind of wishing I preordered multiple now - congrats!
Great video great work 👍
Gawd, hope it wasn't a mistake backing this printer.
I'm instantly allergic to any kind of vendor lock-in. My first encounter with a 3D printer was one that locked you into using their slicer and even their rolls of material. Never again!
im guessing the multi will be like a pallet
