    Your videos are simply the best. You say the same things over and over which is just what I want. I will also watch this video maybe a dozen times. It's the only way to engram it into my brain. Thanks Marc.

    I'm a very visual learner so this was great! Thanks a lot for your prep and presentation. And your discussion of escape route was very reassuring. This is one of my concerns.

    Hi! Marc. Great video. A few quistions about x-country flying,
    1, How many reserve chute do you wear ? one or two?
    2, Do I must change my regular harness to a pod?
    3, How about low class wing? Is my EN-A good for it?
    Thanks!😊

    • @leavesleyaviation
      @leavesleyaviation  2 роки тому +3

      Hi buddy, 1 reserve and in 35 years never thrown one, maybe just lucky, I did come close once in a nationals but still didn’t.
      A std open harness is perfectly good enough and again way back I did my first big xc flights in an open std harness, a friend of mine here in the UK still only fly’s open and she dies many hundreds if kms a year beating most pilots.
      A low class A wing is still a very good wing to do big flights on so stick with that until you know your kicking ass on it and feel totally 100% the boss, then move into a B.👊🪂👍

    Great video Marc, it’s nice to see a decent amount of raw commentary explaining what your thought process is at the time.
    I’m trying to get my head around ‘add outside brake on the downwind section of the turn’ as explained at 7:36.
    How my mind currently perceives it - because we’re within the airmass the wing is only surging/diving from excessive/not smooth inside brake and any pendulum effects because of it. We’re not fixed to the ground so why does the downwind element have an effect on it diving? Going downwind would however move you faster relevant to the ground but then the thermal ‘should’ drift with the wind as well. I would have thought a touch of outside brake on and off to keep a flattish turn (when needed) would be the best case? This isn’t me saying my logic is correct I’m trying to learn
    Cheers!

    • @leavesleyaviation
      @leavesleyaviation  Рік тому

      It just flattens the turn if you feel it’s tucking in a bit too much / diving, it works extremely well when mastered. All the best with it.👍🙏🪂

    • @DanielJonesParamotor
      @DanielJonesParamotor Рік тому

      @@leavesleyaviation thanks for your response. I’m curious as to why that would be more the case on the downwind?

    • @leavesleyaviation
      @leavesleyaviation  Рік тому +1

      @@DanielJonesParamotor Into wind climb but downwind dive with the wind,so a tad sometimes of outer stops any dive and flattens the turn but only apply for a split second then go back to inner.

    Love it. Beautiful scenery too. I feel a trip to the Long Mynd coming on. I've had a run of short flights recently were I haven't been able to connect with the thermals (but found lots of sink) so hopefully I can put some of this into practice and get to cloud base again. Inspiring stuff. Thanks Mark!

    Nice explaination, Beautiful video👊 Can't wait to get up in thermals again. I tend to use the dive energy and catch it on the outside brake. But like you explain it could be the thermal pushing me out, So next time i will be more focussed on maybe going the other direction instead to push inside.

  • @paraglidingflyer
    @paraglidingflyer 3 роки тому +1

    Marc, thx for your work on this, well done. 1st time of heard of slight brake on downwind side. I would of thought that the braking would cause me to elongate my 360 and come out the back of the thermal.

    • @leavesleyaviation
      @leavesleyaviation  3 роки тому

      It will if you apply too much buddy, It’s a tad only to stop the dive then realise.

    • @Woodthreep
      @Woodthreep 3 роки тому

      Me too, normally I was told to break with the outside break while going upwind.. does this apply only for windy days, for avoiding being drifted?

    • @leavesleyaviation
      @leavesleyaviation  3 роки тому

      @@Woodthreep Not sure why you would add outer break going into wind buddy!! I find when turning from upwind to the downwind side it helps stop the dive.

    • @leavesleyaviation
      @leavesleyaviation  3 роки тому

      @@Woodthreep Sorry just to add no it does not help with drifting, nothing can help there because you need to circle in the core while it's drifting "if that makes sense?" basally you drift down wind at what ever wind speed there is.

    • @Woodthreep
      @Woodthreep 3 роки тому +1

      Thank you very much Marc for taking time to reply on my comment! I am a new pilot still trying to figure it out 🙂 what I meant about breaking and drifting is this: when there is wind, your 360s tend to be fast on the downwind side and slow on the upwind. That means downwind you cover more distance. To compensate that, when you start approaching the upwind side you continue flight straight for some time (by releasing a bit the inside break and apply little outside break). You're still getting drifted but with more control, and without falling on the otherside of the thermal. Another scenario that this might be useful is when you're thermaling next to a cliff/slope and need to keep your distance for the object.

  • @osmera_pg
    @osmera_pg 3 роки тому +1

    Interesting. I heard it depend on the wing and construction, some wings tends to turn into thermal by itself and others are push out of the thermal. When I asked what type of wings behave like this, I get always answer "it depends" and get advice that I have to find out by myself with my wing (and I still don't know, I have feeling that my wing goes always straight :-D

    Love all your videos Marc. Great personal touch and feeling like we're hanging out with you in the Cave. At this point I don't know if you plan to redo any of your previous work, but I found another great thermalling video that you may want to check out and see if you'd like to use some of these techniques. I especially like seeing an overview of the terrain, and the track to actually "see" the turns and elevation gain, along with the wind drift. Also the arrows showing wind direction is helpful. Just ideas, you keep doing you.
