  • First episode in this mega-filter build for my large trout pond. Today we will take a look at the various parts of the filter and I'll explain how they are going to be fitted together to form a huge filter which will hopefully clear the pond.
    The next episodes will highlight the individual parts of the filter and have links to the gear I am using wherever possible.
    The parts / features of this filter will be as follows:
    3 x Vortex
    1 x Brush chamber
    1 x Moving bed chamber (water driven)
    2 x Bio / settlement chamber with crates of Alfagrog
    1 or 2 x large shower filters filled with Biohome shower media and white pumice over more crates of Alfagrog
    1 x Daphnia breeding chamber
    (+ possible Aquaponics chambers?)
    A nation of pipes, joints, taps, drains and features which should hopefully make the cleaning of the filter very easy - the goal is to use the sediment rich nutritious water drained from the filter to feed my lawn and garden borders.

      I'm sure that would work but I normally just use a couple of square bales of barley straw to prevent it going green. I thought I'd leave it this year to see if when the green water dies off it will take some suspended sediment down with it but it's a bit early to tell if that will happen.

      Before I put bottom feeders in it used to be clear and you could see a good 7'-8' down from the big platform but it hasn't been clear for years - even if the filter allows me to see 3'-4' down it will be a success.

    Best project and idea of 2018! I had the same idea 30 years ago to make a Daphnia filter, had a cloudy pond and had only 12volt electricity at that place, I caught millions of Daphias in a ditch nearby and put them in the pond, after a few weeks the water was crystal clear, cant wait for part 2, good luck with the project Richard.

    • @pondguru

      The suspended sediment in the water prevents dahnia from 'blooming' in my pond but hopefully by removing suspended solids the daphnia will do well in main pond too.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Yes, I'm really hoping that will work as the flow there will be minimal (literally dripping in) - if daphnia won't grow well I'll fill that container with water cress and increase the flow.

    Well Richard, you don't do things by half mate. So many different aspects to this huge multi faceted pond filter. Although I'm in no position to have a pond myself, I'm really interested to see how it's all planned, constructed and comes together. You explain in layman's terms about all the steps you are taking and the various equipment your using and why your using it. All this presented in a very clear and logical manner in a way that anyone with decent DIY skills could follow. Great video and really looking forward to the next part.

      Pondguru It comes from having to catch everything I used at the last place, when I moved to this place I installed it all even though there is a tap there. Saves water on the bills and I can use it through a pump and hose system if I wish, as it is my water I am not governed by the water rules, IE only using a can

    • @pondguru

    Great video. Can’t wait to see the progress. Very interested in all of the finer details ,which you explain so well in your videos. Always interested in how filtration works in ponds etc. Currently pimping out aquarium filters based on your videos. Curious as to whether you’ve considered taking a clue from nature. You mentioned clear spring water in a previous video. I was wondering if water pumped into a reed bed would filter out a lot of particulate matter resulting in clear run off? Also when you open the bottom drains on the mega filter what happens to the run off? Have you concerns with this? Thanks again eagerly await the next video.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      The spring which feeds the pond dribbles in and although the pond is packed with plants around the edges the water is still stirred up. When draining the tank the water will be directed to my lawn and borders to feed grass / plants.

    • @RustyWalker
      @RustyWalker 6 років тому

      The CAT centre in Wales use a combi of vertical and horizontal reed beds that feed a willow system before finally entering the pond.
      That system's designed to have a potable end product, which is a different design aim to this one.

    That is an amazing set up you've got going on there
    Truely mind blowing your filter holds more water than my pond does :)
    Can yourself or anyone point me in the rightvway to make a barrel filter
    I cannot decide weather woukd be best having inlet at the top or the bottom :/
    I'm guessing the bottom would be better so as water rises and leaves via top I think that way all the heavier partials would sit close to bottom
    Rather than fall all way though from top?
    Advice needed ASAP please tia

    Hello
    I truly enjoy the videos and have learned a tremendous amount, thanks. I've been watching these for some time now, and your pond is quite established. I understand wanting to clear it up, but you are making a huge investment in biological filtration and dedicating a significant percentage of your filtering system to it. Curious...why the enormous biological component for such a mature pond? Are there water issues?
    I am asking because I have a pond, it's cloudy, I was considering adding aeration...should I consider a more complex system?
    Thank you

  • @jameshebrard9354
    @jameshebrard9354 6 років тому

    You are indeed a daring guru of ponds!
    Please allow me to ask a question about culturing Daphnia and other such creatures. Have you determined that their populations are depressed in your pond? Those little creatures usually achieve healthy populations without intervention.
    Have you seen evidence that the rainbow trout have spawned in your pond?
    Thank you so much.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      When I pull plants or muck from the pond it is crawling with life including daphnia but it never blooms due to the amount of sediment suspended in the water. Trout have never spawned as they are triploids (unable to breed)

  • @karlwooduk

    if it will filter fine clay particles then it will filter any waterfleas, daphnia,shrimp etc unless they are growing near the return obviously so yes they will clean the water in the filter but not much will pass through to feed the pond fish, the daphnia tub specifically for them will obviously, huge job u got there, hope u get it right 1st go and dont need much rearranging etc cant be cheap.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      The set up of the grog chambers will support a mad amount of water lice / shrimps which will find their way back to the pond or come out in the water I will be draining off and be used as fertiliser for the lawn and planted borders.

  • @PalJoey-rm2yh
    @PalJoey-rm2yh 6 років тому

    Consider running the vortex component alone at first to see if you can reduce the suspended particulate matter in the pond prior to bringing the other components on line. Any reduction in that suspended matter would "save" the bio components from getting clogged too fast and allow them to work on the dissolved materials where they are most efficient and useful. But it may just be that the pond will have an infinite supply of the solids, but it's worth a shot, and if, after a week or two you don't see any reduction, you've only lost a little time.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      The other parts of the filter will be important for culturing higher forms of life and supporting bacteria to ensure healthier water - goal is to make water clear and healthy so I really need all the various parts together.

    • @PalJoey-rm2yh
      @PalJoey-rm2yh 6 років тому

      The idea was to do some 'mechanical' filtering first via the vortex, before adding in the bio media, which can become clogged. Not to separate the functions in the long term, but give one a head start to enable better efficiency from the other. Same goal.

      I do get fish leeches in the pond from time to time, also seen fish lice so the whole system may become a breeding ground for them but I'm hoping that if I can clear the pond there's a chance that all the small fish (rudd, perch etc.) could see the adult parasites and eat them.

      As the 'food' will be mobile creatures like water lice and shrimps, larvae etc. it will follow the flow back to the pond if the population gets too crowded in the various parts of the filter. Any creatures which are left in there will be flushed out as feed for the lawn and plants in the garden.

    Richard what interested me is the daphnia. Two questions., if you are going to breed daphnia in a tub would you consider selling it? My understanding is daphnia is used as an indication for water quality so should the pond just not fill up with it unless the fish are too ravenous.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      When the water clears in the pond daphnia and other forms of life will do much better in the pond and I'm intending to use the breeding tub to constantly seed the pond. If anyone is local they'll be welcome to swing a net through the tub to feed their fish but I won't be selling it.

    I just came across sort of an unusual way to treat pond water. Its bales of barley. Its even sold at Walmart in small sized for fish ponds.
    Maybe that would help?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Yes, that's what I generally use to treat the green water and as the crops have just come up here I'll be getting a couple of square bales to drop into the pond. They work best near water flow so I'll put them in the return flow from the big filter....when I get it finished, lol
      Did another chamber yesterday (brush chamber) so next task is the moving bed part of the system.

      I'm not sure yet - I have a 16000 lph Aquamax pump but I think it will be way too small for this system. The last part will have the Blagdon Amphibious 12000 to move water to the shower filter(s) but to remove the water from the pond to the main filter it could need something nearer 30000 lph.

    This is the first time I hear about Alfagrog. Is it better than Biohome Ultimate? Btw, great vids. Learn new stuff all the time. Thank you.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      For use in a big dirty pond filter it is a good media but most of the surface area is external so it is nowhere near as effective as the biohome at supporting bacteria - if you watch the video 'Looking inside filter media' you'll see what I mean as I show the internal structure of many different types of media in that one. Where water is cleanest at the end of the filtering process the biohome will be used but the alfagrog will be used here mainly as settlement and to support higher forms of life (which will feed fish when they work their way back to the pond).

    Great idea! No uv filter?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому +1

      It takes around 1 watt per 100 litres to kill suspended algae in a pond so I couldn't afford to run a series of UV filters due to the size of the pond.Usually I keep the pond algae free simply by using 2-3 square bales of barley straw.
      The pressure filter I am using later in this build has UV bulbs in but they are only 50w which is nowhere near enough to impact this pond (it is around 1,000,000 litres)

      Would you recommend using brushes as the first container came with brushes or would you recommend something else.
      Also would you say that Alfagrog is better than pumice is this situation or it be the other way round.
      Thanks lee

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Yes brushes are great for primary settlement so are a good choice for the first chamber. In a fully submerged situation the alfgrog will be better than the pumice since there will be a build up of fine muck in all the chambers which will clog more porous media like pumice.

      As long as you pick a listing which looks like it has different grades of coarseness it will all be good - use a polyester pad or filter floss for the 'fine' polishing pad.

    • @pondguru

      No, nothing extra planned as the running costs for something big enough to make a difference would be huge although the Lotus pressure filter has 50w of UV and will be integrated into teh system near teh end.

  • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx
    @StanTheObserver-lo8rx 6 років тому

    If you use spring water...why do you need bio filtration? Wouldn't just a fine mechanical filter be all you need? Just run it through gravels and then some super fine poly sheets- meters and meters of it. Use the wire brush tub for just more fine particulate removal.
    Backwashing to a sewer is the part you have to figure out!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      The spring just dribbles in and that tends to run clear most of the time. A large fine pad can be clogged in a day from this pond so that would be a costly and maintenance heavy way to remove muck although the shower filter(s) will probably have fine pad over them.
      Waste water will be used to feed my lawns and garden.

    • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx
      @StanTheObserver-lo8rx 6 років тому

      But once it clears the water...switch to courser pads? Mr.Pond,I read that somebody who had the problem of clay ponds being murky in Australia...he drained,dried the pond..then used a compacter on the bottom. Extreme.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      I'm not draining the pond - that's for sure, lol
      The last container will house a pump which will pump to the pressure filter then up to 2 shower filters. I didn't show that in this video as I only just decided to include that into the system a couple of days ago - I'll cover it when I get to that part of the filter in a future video.

    • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx
      @StanTheObserver-lo8rx 6 років тому

      I'm thinking you just about buy out all the floss at your version of Walmarts all over town,use it as a huge prefilter- and when you spend a week washing it once a day...it might get that water crystal clear. After that? Go down to poly mat sheeting or best foams? The initial removal..over a week or month,might take out all the excess free floating clay particles. Clay particles are among the finest that can you can find in water..once you get them out,you might have a more natural clear pond.
      Floss also might be fastest to clear that pond. After that,the other ways to maintain. Just trying to help!

    Could we have a update wounding how it’s going

  • @MrFloRolf
    @MrFloRolf 6 років тому

    Hey Richard!
    I Really think this is an awesome project and I hope it succeeds.
    However I think that there are a few flaws that you should correct while you can. Don't get me wrong here but I think you are taking too much of an aquarium approach to a pond, which is not always applicable.
    Here are a few points you should consider:
    1. Height.
    In my opinion your filter build off too much from the ground. The problem with that is, that the pump will use MUCH more power to push LESS water, as height really is a big problem for most pumps. That means putting a 16.000l/h pump will only really push effective 8-10.000l/h. If you put all your containers into the ground so the water level of the pond is just slightly lower than the water level of the filter, it will use much more of its capabilities.
    2. Filter media
    As the pond is all natural, it features a wide variety of bacteria in the substrate already. Those will be perfect for filtering the waters nitrate/nitrides etc. Your filter should mostly, if not solely, focus on the particles in the water. You should use many many more brushes and no shower filter. Try to get a very Very slow water flow through the brushes to settle a lot of particles.
    3. Pump placement and capacity
    As, again, you only want to filter the water and not the ground, you should place the pump somewhere in the middle. As this is kinda impossible you may want to add a sort of pump chamber which takes in water from the surface/middle ground and has the pump standing clean without mud. This also keeps the possibility of using a tube pump. Tube pumps can push way more water at only a little energy but can NOT push it very high up so 1. comes in again. As for pump capacity, ideally you should (in theory) push at least 1xpond/h through the filter. As that'd be like 200.000l/h I don't think it's possible. You also don't want you pond THAT sterile. More is always better though. Also keep in mind that the brush chamber should have very low water velocity so make the chamber as wide as possible (big cross section). Same goes for the vortex, as you want the dirt to settle. Moving bed/bacteria based chambers on the other hand should have as much movement as possible so the bacteria is able to get sososo much water as possible through it.
    I hope this helps you a little and you take up some of my points.
    I'd love to chat with you about this so hit me up on Facebook if you like.
    Cheers mate!

      @pondguru  6 років тому

      I hear you on all those points and a system built somewhere else which was lower down would definitely have made sense but the ground under the cabin lends itself to locating the filter there so it is out of my wife's view. The ground at the back slopes up so if I went for the filter all on one level I'd lose one or two containers.
      The increased height of the initial parts of the filter will affect pump flow for sure but I'm not concerned with getting a certain turn over rate per hour and the extra fall will allow me to water different parts of the garden I will be developing in the future with really nutritious water (possibly a vegetable garden)
      The moving bed will be water driven with the feed pipes having DIY venturi built into them and a fall is needed for the water to drive the bed. It could turn out that an air pump is still needed too but time will tell there.....lol
      There will be areas of fast flow and slow flow to move media or settle muck and the positioning of inlet / outlet will maximise dwell time in settlement areas.
      Yes, it will need a huge pump - I can get a 30000 lph pump which is a variable 385W so running costs will be fine.
      Yes, the idea of a settlement filter is the primary reason behind making it like this with the brushes in the vortex filters and also in the large brush chamber which will have a nation of them. There will be 2 containers filled with grog which works great in muck and also settles fine muck out really well then the shower filter(s) at the end are to soak up any nitrates before water heads back to the pond. An air pump may be in that section to ensure that the water is not de-oxygenated when it goes back to the pond but a venturi will be built in the outlet to help out there too.
      Ultimately the pond pump may be suspended below a floating island (another project I haven't got round to making yet....) or off the end of the large platform in the pond as that is approx. 8' deep off the end of there - as long as the return from the filter was directed away from the pump the pond should turn over well.
      As the videos progress you'll get a better idea of how each section is set up - this video was really just an overview of the various parts - next part (on the vortex filters) is due to be uploaded later today and I will tweak the various parts as necessary.
      The idea is for the filter to make the water clearer through settlement but also to be a breeding ground for invertebrates which will end up back in the pond to feed the fish, hence the grog as it is great at doing both.
      I'm not on facebook as it is quite literally the work of the Devil - however feel free to ring any time on 07772848730
