This is based on James Hetfield growing up in a family whose religion was Christian Science. They believed in God would heal, provide guidance, and protect you if you did everything for him. It also kept him from being able to go to science class or play football. When his mom was sick with cancer he watched her rot away and die. She never went to get treatment believing prayer and her beliefs would save her. This was right after his father walked on the family. This song is his bitter note letting them know how they made him feel
This is the ultimate "we all went off" type song. Lars is riding the drums, Kirk is going ballistic, James is yelling at his parents, and poor Jason is over in the corner not realizing Lars unplugged his amp. Fucking banger song 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Favorite song off my favorite album. 👍 IMO, Kirk’s best solo.....It’s multilayered, using just about all strings and the entire neck of the guitar. That transition from the end of that solo into that galloping riff is killer.
Ah, the saxophone:) That explains your music theory knowledge. Nice! May I suggest Exivious - Deeply Woven or Rivers of Nihil - The Silent Life with those beautiful sax solos in both songs?
Well, yes but no😂. This is a re upload from my first channel that got hacked. You just happened to request a reaction to a song I’ve already done, months ago haha.
Dave: "Woo! Slow them drums down" *beat drops* Me: "Did...did I just watch this man climax?" I had the same reaction at 13 years old lmao. That was awesome to see
Yea man... I got this album when it came out. I was in 6th grade. My cousin and I would crank it to 10 and headbang non stop the whole album. It's cool seeing people appreciate it like I did in the 80's. Although, now that I understand Hetfield's lyrics and background more I appreciate it more than ever. It amazes me you see people saying Metallica sucks. IMO, everyone should put respect on James and the boys name.
I was sent to love with my super religious aunt whe I was in 2nd grade. When I came back to my father I was jumped and fought almost every boy in my grade. This song hits home to me and it's dope that you took the time to really listen and understand the lyrics. It's a masterpiece and the world needs more people like you. Open minded and listening. Great job
I love how the double-bass kicks are replacing the shredding of the guitar to keep it rolling when the guitar plays open chords during the verses. Pretty interesting
Dyer's eve and Damage,Inc are the two most agressive songs from metallica. Both the last song from the two consecutive albums, is not coincidence i guess. Adding to this that the first song of each albums are the second most agressive songs of the albums. Blackened and Battery. They followed the same kind of "formula". The song before the last are aswell non-lyrics cliff relational songs. Even more, the both second songs are the album-named songs. Just a bit of analysis, i didnt see anyone noticing.
Thank you so much for your reaction ! Musically and philisophically very intresting and very rich ! Bringing lots of intresting point of view and sources of inspiration ! Pretty cool the way you do it, thank ya :)
your analysis is pretty cool and interesting to hear, I think you pick up on some poignant things and also make some cool like extrapolations, like how you mentioned the grunt at the end him being like "im done", that rung true to me/makes sense to me. some reactions people make kinda silly commentary, so this is refreshing Haha. u seem chill too. take care!
@@RandomPerson-ui3xv Old enough to go to Monsters of Rock in '88. Sadly, I didn't know about these guys until the next year and I missed them. Biggest concert regret I have to this day.
It is basically about overly strict parents. They constantly beat this child down with rules of behavior without letting him make his own mistakes. When he is grown he doesn't know how to cope without being told what to do. It is about the rage towards the parents who failed him.
Speaking of "failed", check out "The God That Failed" from Metallica - also about Hetfield's Christian Science upbringing and his mother dying of cancer due to not accepting medical treatment.
Good afternoon sir! I say that because it's afternoon where I live! I love your analytical skills. The way you break things down is so accurate it makes me wonder if I've been listening to music the wrong way! Get it bro! And the way you share your history, where you grew up etc., makes the music personal. Damn I love it, dog. Keep it up!
I immediately subscribed when I heard the word "jazz." I thought to myself, "Oh,. this should be fun." The book end to this lyrically and thematically is "Moma Said" off of Load... and yes, that is the same band playing those two completely different songs.
I love how I'm a white kid from suburbia and I can relate to you through this song. Music brings people together. That's the whole point. Peace brother
I really dug your interpretation of the lyrics. The same enthusiasm can be said about each the players vested interest in the band. I think that's what made Metallica appealing to a wider audience.
James' parents were christian scientists. I remember James saying he suffered from bad headaches and when he went to live with his half brother he was given an aspirin for his headache and he felt like he was doing something bad when he took the aspirin. Ironic that he has ended up in rehab several times for substance abuse.
Man. Even though I know what the song is all about and the story behind it, your explanation about the song is so deep and kind of sad, but, I like it and it's also true.
Just one word describe this song: rancor... tu-ru-tu-ru-tu-ru-tu-ru.... all angry you can think is contained in their riffs and lyrics. The solo is faster until overpowering you and throw you to floor. Also, probably is the most complex, harder and amazing on the Kirk's repertory.
James is talking here about his growing up which was very difficult and he was living in the Family which didn't believe in God and doctors (he didn't EVEN was going to any school)
I know it is more of a hair band BUT check out The song Steelheart by the band Steelheart and the Unforgiven by Metallica... BTW .. ask them if they can still play this one 😂
The lead singer James Hetfields mama died when he was 10 she was a Christian scientist and refused medicine so she died from that and his dad pretty much was not talking to him or didn't care for him
I like watching you enjoy the music that moved me so long ago... my parents listened to Black Sabbath and C.C.R. with an older sister big on Kiss back in the 70's... then the birth of Metallica in the early 80's... times were much diffrent back then... where most people thought metal musicians were simply screaming, and smashing their musical instruments, with no musical talent... such arrogant fools 😎 I wish I could see the smug look on their stupid - idiotic - faces today 😝 on second thought... I'd rather not 🤢
All i can say to you is, yes, people used to have talent. Metallica WAS entry level music for musicians. Now it's amazing coz no one can play anything. In this day and age I recommend you do a reaction to "Meshuggah Bleed"". This band is the only metal band on earth that is amazing
This IS the song that brought this country boy into the world of metal!
This is the best thrash song of all time. So great pick. ✊ RESPECT

My favorite album. 🤘
It´s an incredible album. From start to finish.

2nd song is the epic, 4th the ballad.
okay so this is what "to live is to die" leads into. sorry metalheads i messed up my Metallica knowledge

This is their best album from start to finish. Lars' best work.
as a drummer, yes, production not so much.... RIP AJFA bass
I agree. And Justice For All was the pinnacle.
When Lars actually worked for a living. When Kirk actually knew how to solo and pushed the envelope. Best Album Best Song!

Legendary music, love ya pal
The first time I heard this song I cried cause it really hit home
Man didn’t know what do after the drums in the beginning when the speed hit😂
When you hear this song... you understand why James is THE tightest rythm-guitarist in the world... so much anger projecting from his fingers!!
my understanding is James the singer's father left him and his mom around the age of 12 or 13 and then his mom died 6 months later of cancer
You're so insightful, I love watching your content

Metallica has never been entry level music, unless you can down pick like hetfield or play pulling teeth, do the four horsemen solo.
Good luck.
