Fun fact: this was made by the same studio as madoka magica and the monogatari series
When watching the shows it's clear how much the monogatari series anime was inspired by sayonara zetsubou sensei
I think the endings are worth watching just for Kurayami shinjuu soushisoai, and Zessei bijin, the visuals are nothing crazy, but I love the songs

Man this is so nostalgic since I uploaded these songs to youtube when they first aired (before youtube nuked my first channel). The anime itself feels very weird to watch nowadays since a lot of topics had to do with current social issues that had happened in Japan around that time and the actual "plot" of the story only appeared in the last few chapters of the manga. You are correct that it has to do with religion to an extent but you would never know about that just watching the Anime. The Anime will mostly appear as a comedy & the cult themes remain solely in the openings.

After reading the few final chapters of the manga, reading some discussions and theories of those final chapters and the symbolism of these anime openings that hinted and foreshadowed things that happened in the manga, these openings give me chills. I start to see things that I never seen before I read those chapters in these openings and rewatch some episodes through some reactions channel.
When I watched the anime few years ago, even though I don't understand most of the jokes and I did laugh at some of the comedy, and the story and commentary was kinda interesting despite me feeling like they are so over the place but I still somehow like the anime enough to read the manga.
But after finishing the manga, the comedy series shifted into horror once you knew some informations and revisiting this series, from me being amused and somewhat loving the comedy in the anime when I first watching the series, then it turned those comedy and wholesome scenes into such a grotesque and sickening clumps in my guts and it just fill me with sadness and depression on second watch...

It's incredible of how much sense and meaning these OPs have after you read the final chapter of the mangá.
    It's definitive a Kafkanian metamorphosis.

This series is damn hilarious. It's mostly absurdist social critique of Japanese society, referential humor and just over the top nonsense to top if off, so not for everyone and does require some knowledge of Japanese society for the jokes to land properly. Back in the day fansubs they would mitigate it with translation notes and sometimes SZS episodes would just have a image or txt file along with the video you downloaded explaining the ones that wouldn't fit a phrase on the top of the screen.
Though it's a shame they never got to fully adapt the manga, it takes some wild turns near the end. Still one of the most memorable manga endings to me just due to how unexpected it is. The mangaka and the anime director were friends and there are references to some of those twists in the openings, made years before the manga concluded, which I find hilarious and awesome. People going back to the openings after the manga concluded were shocked.

    Please watch the Endings.
The show is a comedy, so its openings and endings are quite random.
Between some random images of the Openings and Endings, you can see some of the plot, but it is almost imperceptible.

Would you believe me if I told you the show was a very dry comedy where a teacher rants about parts of Japanese society he doesn't like to his class?
The studio who makes shows like this and Monogatari just like making weird OPs. The story goes that there was an anime called Moon Phase back in like 2002 where the whole OP was lounge music while sound clips of the main girl saying "Neko Mimi Modo" over and over played. The whole thing was so bizarre that it exploded in popularity. Since then, making experimental OPs has just sorta been SHAFT's thing. Like Denpa Onna's OP was sung completely off-key and Negima!? had a gimmick where they'd slightly change the OP every episode or two (sometimes the singers would change, other times it would be colored different or characters would appear in different places).
This anime's OP gimmick is just that they're horrifying.
