I live in Tassie and have seen the evolution of fish farms in the south of the state over past 20 years. From just a couple of warts on the horizon in the early 2000's to a complete breakout of them in the d'entrecasteaux channel just south of Hobart. They now started building them offshore in open oceans off Bruny Island. But it only takes one good storm to obliterate the pens. This happened last year and a massive amount of salmon escaped. Then there was a fishing frenzy up and down the coast in every estuary as the salmon naturally tend toward these area. Punters were hauling in fish bigger than they ever dreamed. Driving home with eskies packed to the brim. The trouble with Salmon for many folks out there is that it is so fucking delicous. And when you are in a deli and it sits innocently in the window its too hard to connect it to all this. Just like pork belly to cruelly treated caged pigs.
Marthas looks like such an epic surf spot. I hope I get to surf it one day. Mostly, I really hope those cowboys take the hint and don't go near the place. Well filmed and put together. Rasta, come visit us southerners more often mate! ! I better start buying Patagonia wetsuits from now on and help support the good causes they are getting behind. Kudos to Patagonia and all those who get off their asses to try and make a positive difference in the world. Signing off from the saggy couch ;-)

Excellent video. Many thanks for producing a piece on such an important topic. Even Tasmania, as remote as it's location may be, is affected by capitalistic-styled, mindless greed and environmental exploitation.

In Ecuador... Shrimp Farming.... Biggest exportnother than petróleo all over europe China usa....Has destroyed Huge percentages of mangroves destroyed where actual non pumped up shrimp larvae hatch , and has lowered the fish as well be cause everything comes from the mangroves... Not to mention the waves...they are changing because of change of beach dynamics because of the ignorance people have and have disturbed the natural flow... The worst thing that happened to Ecuador chemicals in our rivers

This was interesting. I was in the Faroe Islands in June and there is some fish farming there with some of the same controversy. I have the same negative reaction to wind farms in the ocean, although they present different environmental issues.

Just to be clear, I support this action completely. The first speaker said I don't eat farmed salmon, something is wrong with this first of all they are not in the Atlantic. Salmon is a huge part of the Pacific Northwest and granted we have our issues. But certainly salmon coming from the Pacific Ocean is a thing. Wild salmon such as Chinook, Sockeye and Coho are wonderful.

good sentiments but its literally a drop in the ocean in terms of whats happening in the world, and the problems the earth is facing. At least in Australia, there are some laws and regs surrounding the fish farming industry, theres state govt departments such as fisheries, national resources, parks and wildlife (a version of each , in each state) filled with smart people who monitor businesses such as this. What we really need to be doing is make our services available to help our neighbours such as Indonesia, Fiji, etc who aern't as good at managing their eco systems and fisheries. I applaude Patagonia for making the vid and highlighting this issue, but I think they need to send Rasta up to Sumatra/indo and do a piece on what fish farming, unregulated fishing has done..the ocean is dying..its on its last gasp up there... and noone is doing anything about it!!! Patagonia..you have bigger fish to fry..

A lot of people go out of their way to eat fish for the omega 3 oil content. Problem with farmed salmon is they dont have the concentration of omega 3 that wild caught fish do. The reason being, omega 3 oils are not produced within animals, but rather they need to eat plants which contain omega 3 oils. Farmed salmon are not given a natural diet, they are fed pellets. So they are not a part of the natural food chain that would deliver the omega 3 oil to the fish, that would then benefit people for consuming the salmon. Unless somethings changed and now they fortify omega 3 in the pellets. But i doubt it

@@justinlowery6017 And we do benefit Omega 3 from eating plants. Sense is subjective, because eating fish makes sense to me. They're pretty yummy and nutritious.

Ocean production like any other industry MUST be conducted with all measures, certificates and regulations that RESPECT NATURE. OCEAN PRODUCTION can do that! We must be involved and develope new ways to produce food taking care of the ocean!
We can do that! We will reach that goal! 💙🌊

They farm Atlantic salmon in Tazmania? Why not pacific? I'm guessing prices or something. Probably doesn't matter what fish it is.
Living in the UK i always thought this was a more sustainable method of fishing. Obviously a lack of science behind choosing suitable places. Real shame that this could possibly happen

Humans need to stop breeding. The more mouths we have the more food we need to produce. At least farming should take some pressure off fishing the native stock. Going to a small community and attempting to destroy their economy is probably not the way to go. Why not come up with an alternative solution to farming for the locals as well. Just my opinion.
